Background

This is a poem based on resistance. The British army had arrived in Georgetown Guyana. Suddenly, the
constitution granting powers to the Guyanese government was suspended, and the British were acting
under pressure from the government, who feared the Guyana would become a communist state. The
poet was imprisoned at the time and wrote ‘This is the Dark Time My Love’. At this time, Guyanese
wanted their own independence from the British rule.
