Repair of Tenaris Premium Connections.

1. Scope

This procedure should be used as a guideline to inspect, classify and repair pipes or accessories
threaded with Tenaris connections. The recommendations contained herein apply to both new
and used products in field or stock yard condition. Do not use this document to repair in a
machine shop.

2. Field of application

All Tenaris Premium Connections are covered by this document.

3. Reference documents

Latest revision of API 5A5

4. Definitions and abbreviations

5. Procedure

5.1. Product identification

Verify that all pipes or accessories are properly identified. Should original manufacturing
identification no longer be visible, identify each piece to be inspected with a sequential number.

5.2. Cleaning

Remove thread protectors only when ready for inspection.

Remove all traces of storage compound from thread area. The use of a high-pressure washer is
recommended. A non-chlorine solvent may be used provided all solvent residue are eliminated.
After cleaning, it is necessary to provide for a complete drying of thread and seal areas.
The use of wire brushes or other abrasive methods is forbidden.
Clean and dry thread protectors.

5.3. Connection inspection

Connection inspection will only be visual. No thread gauges, seal gauges or any other
measurement instruments shall be used.
Perform a thorough visual inspection of each of the connection’s areas listed on Sections 5.9
and 5.10.
Recommendations for Field Inspection and
RP_INSP_REP Rev.: 05 Page: 3 / 8
Repair of Tenaris Premium Connections.

5.4. Connection classification

After inspection, pipe can be classified under one of the following categories:
-With thread and seal in perfect condition. These products can be run / re-run without any
further repair work.
-With thread that must be hand repaired. Seal shall be in perfect condition.
-With threads that must be re-cut at a Tenaris licensed workshop.

5.5. Connections to be run / re-run without repair work

This classification applies when no damage has been found on either end. Thread surface
treatment shall be in perfect condition.

5.6. Connections to be hand repaired

Identify rejected pipe end using a red tape or red tag. Perform the repair work in accordance to
Sections 5.9 and 5.10.
Unless the pipe will be used immediately apply a new layer of storage compound and re-install
the clean protector.

5.7. Connections to be re-cut

Identify rejected pipe end using a red tape or red tag. Send the damaged product to the nearest
Tenaris licensed workshop.
If one of the two threaded ends is acceptable, apply a new layer of storage compound and re-
install the clean protector.

5.8. Hand repair operation

Any hand repair operation must be done by Tenaris personnel or by a third party company
with personnel that have been trained, qualified and certified for this specific job, by Tenaris.

5.8.1. Hand repair evaluation

Any connection which has been hand repaired, will only be considered acceptable if the
damage has been completely removed and hand repair has not significantly changed the shape
of the repaired area.
If after repairing, the connection is not acceptable, the product shall be classified as
"Connection to be re-cut" and shall be sent to the nearest Tenaris licensed workshop.
If after repairing, the connection is acceptable, apply a new layer of storage compound and re-
install the clean protector.
Tenaris suggests performing a new thread surface treatment when:
- After repairing, it is possible to see the material’s base color;
- Repaired pipes will not be run / re-run immediately.
All products subject to hand repair shall be properly identified with the legend “Repaired”

Note: In case of any doubt concerning repair of Pins and Boxes, the criteria of the Tenaris
Specialist must be followed.

(1) Minor pitting may be accepted subject to Tenaris Specialist approval.

(2) Depending on damage severity and extension, repair is allowed only if performed by a
Tenaris Specialist.
(3) In this area the use of a grinder to repair the connections is allowed.
(4) Minor imperfections may be accepted by a Tenaris specialist.

Note: After any field repair the application of Moly-disulfide spray, prior to applying the
thread compound, is recommended.

5.11. Other items to be considered

What follows is a list of other thread conditions that may require hand repair by a Tenaris
specialist.

5.11.1. Burrs on black crest thread

Burrs as shown in the picture below are not acceptable and shall be removed with a small
emery paper.
Recommendations for Field Inspection and
RP_INSP_REP Rev.: 05 Page: 6 / 8
Repair of Tenaris Premium Connections.

Burrs as shown in picture below are acceptable only on non flank to flank connections, on
flank to flank connections (e.g. Tenaris 3SB) this burrs must be removed. When removing
them care should be taken not to push them towards the thread flanks where they could be
more dangerous.

Burrs are not allowed in perfect thread area.

5.11.2. Tong marks on coupling OD

Gripping marks can be dangerous depending on their location.

A: The area of the coupling near the bearing face has the minimum wall thickness and
therefore special care should be taken with tong marks. The coupling shall be rejected if the
notch reaches the coupling face.
B: The mid area of the coupling has the maximum wall thickness. Marks on this area can be
accepted according to API specification. See Table 1.

5.11.3. Tong marks on re-cut pin end

Tong marks from making up or breaking out a connection may remain on thread crest after
the connection has been re-cut.
To determine the acceptance of tong marks the connection shall be divided in three sections
each having the same length.
In section 1 and 2 the thread must be free of tong marks.
In section 3 the thread could have some tong marks, never deeper than half the thread height
at any point.
3 2 1

5.11.4. Radius between the cylindrical part of the thread and the seal

Radius

The radius must be smooth and without any galling marks, pitting or any other defects.

5.11.5. Over-torque

Damage to pin nose and box shoulder can occur when a torque higher than the designated
maximum torque value is applied during make up.
Connections subject to over-torque must be rejected.
An over-torque condition can be easily detected on the coupling ID by finger touch.

5.12. Surface Treatment

After re-cutting, the surface must be re-coated as per product specifications.

6. Records

The manufacturer shall issue a report specifying: number of inspected ends, number of rejected
ends, hand-repaired and accepted ends.
