President’s Message____________________________________________
Greetings, chapter members!
Earlier this month, many of us took to the polls on election day to elect our new
leaders for the future. It was a momentous day that saw the political dynamic of
our country’s Congress shift from the left back to the right. Whether Democrat or
Republican, the country spoke—and spoke out loud. For better or worse, the
American people wanted change—and that is exactly what they got.
This month also marks an election month in our own Jaycee organization. On
November 17, we’ll elect new leaders for 2011. The beauty of our organization is
that the leadership is always fresh because change happens every year.
My motto for this year was ‘Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders—Today.’ With an organization that gives young
people great opportunity to take on new leadership roles and challenges, this motto is not far from the truth! By being
on the Board of Directors or as a chairperson of a signature project, you get the chance to lead something right away.
One such project is the Healthy Baby Contest, which just wrapped up last month. Providing the lead was
chairwoman Sarah Young. Kudos and congrats to her and the HBC Committee for running a smooth, well-tuned
project this year. This project took months of planning since April and entailed long hours of commitment and
dedication. Helping her along were the likes of Ramy “I wish those babies names weren’t” So “long.”
Also fast in finding judges was Allan “Quick as a Tiger” Wu who secured the judges faster than Jet Li could cut
char siu. You could also find Krystal “This is more fun than Adopt-a-School” Lee manning the ever stressful
registration table. This year’s contest winner was Chloe Meyer who took home the $2,500 savings bond and free
Playskool car repair services courtesy of Ken “I specialize in fixing Trikes for Tykes” Sum of Sum’s Auto Center.
As we gear up for the Thanksgiving holiday, and we reflect on what we’re thankful for: I am especially thankful
for having such a great chapter to work for and such great members that make up this organization. I cannot ask for a
better group of people to have served with this year who have made projects such as the Healthy Baby Contest and
many others—ones to be proud of!
Yours in Jaycees,
Ryan Ng
59th President, “Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders—Today.”

At 10AM the proceedings got underway with an always-enthusiastic crowd cheering things on. Because the Finals
took place on Halloween a special Costume element was added. Judged separately from the overall awards, it added a
little extra spice that was very popular.
Along with many pirates, a couple of UH Cheerleaders, and a few Disney characters we had not 1, but 2 Elvis! One
of them was even named Elvis. Especially popular were the Dole Pineapple & Milkman characters that graced the stage.
All during the procedures the HCJ, with some help from our fellow chapters,
saw the contest through smooth as silk. From Krystal Lee at the Registration
Table to Anthony Sato & Ken Sum overseeing the Contestant Line to Jeanne
Pinpin & Chris Parker watching over the Goodie Bags, it was a well-oiled
machine.
Our very own HCJ, and Miss Chinatown Court member, Melanie Wong sat in
the very difficult seat of one of the judges who had to pick a winner. We don’t
envy the job she had to do that day. Speaking of Miss Chinatown, we were
honored to have some of the ladies of the Court there to present prizes and add
their prestige to the day.
It finally came down to the hard task of finding the top baby backstage. Faye,
Mike & Deanne crunched the numbers wiki wiki, while out front we were
entertained by the excellent ukulele duo, Heart & Soul. The team in the back came
up with the totals and they pointed to a clear outcome for the contest. Drumroll…
This year’s Healthy Baby is…Chloe Meyer! She proved herself a true pro as
she actually walked the stage in her cape and crown blowing kisses to the adoring
crowd. Did we witness the start of a sparkling stage career? Could be.
HCJ saw the day through once again, putting on this celebration of family, keiki
and good health. It don’t get much more ‘Hawaii’ than that! Well done to all!
With over one hundred countries in attendance, HCJ sent five of its own delegates
to partake in the festivities. Current President Ryan Ng attended along with Past-
Presidents Terence Young, William Fung and Gerald Chung. Also in attendance
from Hawaii were Glennon Young and Jay Raymundo, President-Elect of Honolulu
Filipino Jaycees.
The week began with the Opening Ceremonies near the historic Osaka Castle
followed by a Welcome Night party of food and revelry. Attendees got to sample
some of the great cuisine of Japan including soba noodles, sushi and fried whale meat.
That’s right, whale meat—which incidentally—is illegal in many countries but not
Japan. Days were spent attending seminars focusing on business and professional
development, networking and the like.
“This is a spectacle, no-doubt,” said President Ryan. “I’ve been to several national conventions but those don’t
compare in terms of scope and magnitude. You really get to meet a lot of different people from different walks of life.”
Also on tap during the week was visits with HCJ’s sister chapters. HCJ has sister chapter relationships with
Peninsula JCI (Hong Kong), Taipei JCI (Taiwan) and Utsunomiya JCI (Japan). All were in attendance during the
convention and HCJ had a chance to visit with them during various luncheons.
World Congress also afforded some time for sightseeing and fun. Many
feasted on the infamous “Tako-yaki,” an octopus ball confection BBQ’d with a
special sauce and slathered with mayonnaise. Delegates were able to attend
Universal Studios Osaka and some chapters made visits to nearby cities of
Kyoto, the original capital of Japan.
“I enjoyed going to Kyoto to see the historic shrines and temples,” said
Gerald Chung. “The city has a certain serene charm not necessarily found in
Osaka.”
Closing out the week was the closing ceremony at the Kyocera Dome followed by a formal gala banquet. For those
who attended, it was a great time indeed.
“It’s really great to have members see what World Congress is all about,” said Terence Young, former World
Congress Director. “Maybe one of these days we can bring World Congress back to Hawaii.”
[ Editor’s Note: HCJ is the only Hawaii Chapter to have hosted a World Congress. HCJ has hosted it not once, but
twice – in 1997 & 1971. 1971, coincidentally, was also the birth year of the NewsDragon. ]
