Short history of E-Commerce in Bangladesh: The E-Commerce sector has seen dramatic growth
since the early 2000’s when Bangladesh lacked widespread internet access or a reliable online
transaction system.
✓ In 2009, the Bangladesh Bank began permitting online transactions.
✓ According to (ITU), the number of internet users has nearly tripled from 6.5 percent of the
population in 2013 to 18.2 percent in 2017 and continues to grow.

eCommerce sites and around 8,000 eCommerce pages on Facebook.

there are around 100 e-commerce online shopping sites -- such as chaldal.com, rokomari.com --
that deliver almost all groceries.
Today, buyers place more than 30,000 orders daily and 65 percent of the orders are generated from
Dhaka and its surrounding areas, Chittagong and Sylhet. The rest of the orders come from outside
metros.
Annually the purchases generate Tk 800 crore in turnover. While the market size was about Tk
200 crore 4-5 years ago.
Chaldal, delivers 1,700 orders daily in Dhaka. While a year ago, the company delivered 750 orders
a day. And it is expected that the flow of orders to increase four-five folds in the next couple of
years.

percent of which are through MFS platforms, according to industry insiders. Last year, mobile
money transactions grew 48.75 percent year-on-year to Tk 234,691.79 crore.

Currently, about Tk 750 crore is transacted a day through MFS on average, mostly through over
the counter transactions.

bKash is the most popular MFS in the country with a market share of over 60%. Besides

strategic partnership with Ant Financial, which will be taking a 20% stake in the local MFS giant.

Rocket is a bank-led mobile banking service, with agents that are also available in the 182
branches of DBBL in the country. It is the first company to provide banking facilities through
mobile phones. It is second to bKash in terms of MFS market share in the country and currently
has 218,818 agents.

Ride-sharing in Bangladesh as much like most of the trends in western countries flow to this side
of the world behind time, ride-sharing is also no exception.
Bangladesh witnessed a leap in ridesharing space with the emergence of Pathao, the most popular
local ride sharing company which got off the ground in 2016 and the entrance of Uber in
Bangladesh market in late 2016.
