Closing the Divide:

A Digital Device:
Many schools now supply, or are considering supplying, an Internet-connected device for each
student. These 1:1 programs that assign a laptop, tablet, or similar device to each student can
support differentiated instruction, project-based learning, flipped classrooms, enhanced
collaboration, practice communicating in multiple formats, and a host of other instructional
strategies. Some materials can, of course, be loaded onto the device itself.

Adjust Resources and Assignments:

Perhaps the simplest way to close the divide is to reduce the need for home Internet
connectivity. This can be done by choosing devices for 1:1 programs that store
programs on an internal drive like a flash drive. This was every student can read an e-
textbook or watch a video installed on his or her computer . Asking students to use
information that's only available online may leave some students at a disadvantage.
Schools should make sure all materials can be downloaded to and stored on devices so
people can access the material when not connected to the Internet.
