Characters

P
erformance Objective: Using AWW, SW independently define the term, character
and correctly list and describe at least three characters from a given story scoring at
least three out of four on the character assessment.

Resources or Materials Needed: SW need a computer or tablet and Internet access to utilize AWW.

Time: 60 minutes.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: SW think of their favorite book. Using AWW, SW list all of the
characters they can recall from the story. SW share the name of the book and their list with a partner.

Step 2: Content Presentation: TW display Learner’s dictionary to define the term, character and explain
the importance of identifying and creating characters. TW use AWW to demonstrate making a list of
characters and their descriptions from “Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears”. TW present the writing prompt
that SW use to write their narratives over the next few lessons in this unit. The writing prompt is “Describe
your first day of 2nd grade” (optional: teacher can choose to discuss his/her first day of 2nd grade as a student,
his/her 1st day of class with current students, or his/her 1st day of ever teaching 2nd grade). TW Think Aloud
to demonstrate how to start thinking about the characters that would be in this story if the teacher was going
to write his/her own narrative. TW use AWW to list a few characters and their descriptions.

Step 3: Learner Participation: SW first think about the characters that they will include in their story.
Then, SW collaborate with a group of four students engaging in a Round Robin where they each take turns
naming and describing characters that will be in their stories.

Step 4: Assessment: Independently, SW use AWW to define the term, character. Also, SW list and describe
three characters from “Don’t Squeal Unless It’s a Big Deal: A Tale of Tattletales” to complete the Character
assessment (See Lesson 5 – Assessment (5)).

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: SW engage in a Round Robin to name and describe as many
characters from “Don’t Squeal Unless It’s a Big Deal: A Tale of Tattletales.”

Lesson Plan Summary: The main instructional strategies used in this lesson plan are explaining,
demonstrating, modeling, and organizing strategies. During the content presentation, the teacher explains
the term, character and demonstrates how to use AWW to display the names of key characters and their
descriptions from a previously read story. During the learner participation, students have the opportunity
to collaborate with their group about the characters they will create for their own narratives. These
instructional strategies support the Cognitivism learning theories, because they inform students of the
learning objective and help them to organize information that will be used in the narratives that they will
compose over the next few lessons (Gagne, 1998, p. 190).
