SOIL STABILISATION USING FLYASH AND RICE HUSK ASH

ABSTRACT

Soil existing at a particular site may not be appropriate for construction of engineering
structures. The present study made an attempt to enhance the geotechnical properties of Black
cotton soil replaced with industrial wastes having pozzolanic value like rice husk ash (RHA) and
fly ash (FA).Soil stabilization is carried out for weak soils having low strength and poor
engineering properties, the mostly available black cotton soil has low strength and stability to
resist load coming on it and also it has high settlement characteristics. Fly ash is one of the
material available in abundance as a result of industrial byproduct. The main constituents in Fly
ash is silica and alumina up to 85% and other is 15%. Rice Husk Ash (RHA) is obtained from the
burning of rice husk. The RHA had 90.2% silica content. This high amount provides good
pozzolanic action. To conduct laboratory studies such as Compaction test for OMC
determination, Specific Gravity test, Unconfined Compressive(UCC) test, Atterberg’s Limits
(Plastic limit, Liquid limit), Swelling Index at various percentages of Fly Ash and Rice Husk
Ash. For the various combination of soil and additive (4%,6%,8%), the various percentage of
Rice Husk (0%,50%,100%) and Fly Ash (0%,50%,100%) have been used and analyzed the
engineering properties of black cotton soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect
of Fly Ash and Rice husk ash to improve the performance of black cotton soil .
