III. Conclusion
Vote-buying is prevalent across the country during the near elections but is very elusive.
The easiest way to break this and avoid putting the wrong candidates in the position is if
people would have the awareness. A social media campaign will be conducted,
specifically an infographic covering topics related to vote-buying. It aims to enlighten the
people about how their votes can help everyone and the country if they assess who to
vote wisely.
Manuscript
Vote buying and vote selling obstruct the democratic process yet remain pervasive.
COMELEC becomes more helpless in resolving this problem because it is very elusive.
Everyone knows about it but no one can prove it as it is not done blatantly by the
candidates and it can also be easily denied. Vote-buying is an act where an individual,
usually those who are campaigning for the candidate, gives money or anything of value
to make someone or a group to vote for or against a candidate. As we all know, vote-
buying is highly prevalent across the country. Usually, it occurs in the last week until the
day of election. The amount of money differs among groups. Leaders have their
respective places to conduct surveys to see if voters support their candidates. If not,
prices of votes go up. According to Maribel Buenaobra, an executive director of the
PPRCV, candidates would spend millions, not for election lawyers or poll watchers, but
giving money to families.
There were some strategies that aimed to stop politicians from vote buying but
have often failed. Therefore, it may be more effective if campaigns focused more on the
voters. We will be proposing a social media campaign about this issue. We will be making
an infographic to be uploaded on a social media networking site, specifically Facebook.
An infographic is a great method to communicate messages in a simple way. According
to SMA Marketing, content incorporating color into the design has been shown to increase
reader attention span by 82%. It takes a short time to read and understand and it can
easily be shared. In fact, infographics are liked and shared on social media three times
more than any other type of content. We chose Facebook because it has a wide range
of audience and it is the mostly used social media networking site. According to Lyfe
Marketing, 80% of all internet users use Facebook. It is one of the best sources to stay
updated with the latest news and information. The infographic will address significant
concerns related to vote-buying. Concise but relevant information will be included in the
infographic. Some included are the system of vote-buying, its state in our country, and its
consequences. To deliver the content, we will be balancing the use of both words and
graphics to catch their interest yet stay informative. This infographic will cover three
semiotic systems which are linguistic, visual and spatial. This way, we will be able to
convey our desired message of voting wisely effectively.
Generally, the purpose of this campaign is to not tolerate unjust competition
between candidates. But to give the media campaign more depth, this aims to enlighten
the people that their votes should depend on how they appraise the credibility of the
candiates, not by money or any value.
COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez said that vote buying is a problem that
will stay with us until the people becomes enlightened about it. We ourselves will be the
ones who hand out the privilege to the wrong people if we give in to their bribes. Senior
Supt. Tacaca, a provincial police director in Dumaguete City stated that a clean election
leads to orderliness, an honest election leads to respect, an accurate election leads to
trust, a meaningful election leads to growth and a peaceful election leads to
advancement.
This media campaign will be a 5-step procedure. The first will be the researching
about vote-buying. The second will be the summarization of important details to be used
in the infographic. Third will be the editing of the layout of the infographic. Fourth will be
the uploading of the infographic on Facebook. The fifth and last step will be the sharing
of the infographic to our acquaintances. The materials that will be used in this media
campaign will be laptop and an editing software. This media campaign will also not be
spending any cost because we will do the layout of the infographic ourselves. We will be
making it simple but appealing to make sure that we’ll get their attention and at the same
time make it highly informative and convincing for the voters.
This media campaign will benefit the voters. They will know the importance of their
votes and what it can contribute to the country. They will be more convinced to not take
money from the candidates because they will be aware of how the candidates step on
their dignity. Lastly, the people will be taught to vote according to their conscience
regardless of what was offered to them. This media campaign will be a reminder to the
public to make wise choices of whom to vote. If nobody would buy votes, no one would
sell them.
In fact, Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes said that candidates must be evaluated
through the LASER test, which stands for Lifestyle, Action, Supporters, Election conduct
and Reputation. Giving our vote to a candidate does not depend on the money we receive
from them. Local and national leaders must be evaluated intelligently by the voters
because they will take on a big responsibility. This media campaign will serve as a small
step but may be a big leap to change the ways of the election here in our country. It is
just right that we give the voters a sense of reason in using their right to vote. For they
hold in their hands the decision of entrusting the position to the rightful leaders.
