UNIT 1: ARTS

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF THE ILOCOS REGION AND THE CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION (CAR)

ILOCOS REGION

1. Architecture

Vigan- considered as “ Intramuros of the North”

- spanish colonial architecture (narrow and

cobble-stoned streets known as “Calle Crisologo”)

- Houses: huge, high-pitched roofs, large and rectangular living rooms)

: made of ( adobe, bricks, lime, terracotta, hardwood floors, and windows of capiz

shells framed in wooden window panels)

2. Textile

Inabel- a hand weaving technique of the Ilocanos. Produced using traditional wooden looms.

Different Designs represent different meaning:

o Dizzying “binakol weave”- represents the waves of the sea.

- protects them from bad spirits.

3. Pottery

Burnay- an unglazed earthen jar with small opening.

-Storage: water and rice grain

-Container: salt, brown sugar, basi, (local wine), and bagoong (fermented fish)

PANGASINAN

1. Weaving

-arts and craft: smoothly woven Bolinao mats made from buri or raffia leaves and bamboo crafts

(baskets, furniture) of San Carlos.

CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION (CAR)


KALINGA

1. Textile
- Southern Kalinga women wear the wap-around skirt or tapis called Kain
- Northern Kalinga wears saya (an ordinary woman’s skirt covering the body from waist to
feet)
Colors used in textile have cultural meaning:
Red- bravery
Black- soil or land
White- flowers of the coffee trees
Yellow- sand
Green- for mountains
2. Basketry
-Labba- a bowl shaped basket made from rattan, with sizes that vary from 20 to 150 cm
in diameter.

3. Tattooing

-another form of art of the Kalinga

-usually covers the chest and the arms

-considered as clothing and decoration

-signifies a rite of passage from youth to adulthood

- a mark of heroism, bravery, and one status in the community

Wang-Od – last mambabatok or traditional Kalinga tattoo artist.

IFUGAO

-means “natives of the Cordillera”

1. Sculpture

Bul’ul- a wooden sculpture that represents the rice granary spirits.

- used in rituals that are performed to call the ancestors to protect their
rice fields from pestilence and to ask for an abundant harvest.

Lingling-o or dinumug- amulets of the Ifugaos.

-fertility symbols worn abound the neck.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

1. Textile
-province is also known for their burial cloth, kadangyan, woven by female elders.
Wanes- mens traditional attire.
Lufid- for women, a short and narrow wrap-around skirt which extend from the navel to the
knees, and has a side opening.
Ginaspalawanes- a type of belt, married women of Bontoc and Kankanay in the Northern
Cordillera wear.
Ikat- weaving method.

ABRA

TINGGUIANS- weave textiles for clothes and blankets.

-noted for white textiles with horizontal stripes.

Lesson 2:

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF CAGAYAN VELLEY AND CENTRAL LUZON

CAGAYAN VALLEY

- Northeastern part of Luzon

-irrigated with waters from Cagayan River (longest river in the country)

Vakul- a head gear used by the Ivatan women to protect them from heat of sun and rains.

Soot- for men, a rain cape

FAMOUS ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS IN OLONGGAPO, ZAMBALES, NUEVA ECIJA, AND


BATAAN:

1. Spanish Gate- located in Olongapo City, Zambales.


2. San Andres Apostol Parish- church of Masinloc, Zambales. Known for the use of coral
stones.
3. Parish of Three Kings- located at Gapan City, biggest and oldest church in Nueva Ecija
4. Abucay Church or Saint Dominic De Guzman Parish Church- administered by
Dominicans.

ARTS AND CREAFTS OF CALABARZON AND BICOL REGION

LAGUNA

Carving

-Paete, one of the towns in Laguna, considered as “Woodcarving Capital of the Philippines”

RZAL PROVINCE
-Angono in Rizal province is considered as “Art Capital of the Philippines” and known for
“higantes”

TAAL BATANGAS

-famous for producing piña fabric.

Calado or burda- made by three group of people- the designer, the embroider, and the cutter.

Balisong- also known as butterfly knife, derived from “bali” means broken and sungay means
horn.

Batangas- considered as “Balisong Capital of the Philippines”
