Ethnicity means pertaining to a group of people who have the same customs or beliefs, language

and values. The world is composed of many ethnic groups, from the Han-Chinese which is the
biggest ethnic group even to the smallest local group who have only a small number of
individuals (Crossman,2019). In the Philippines, there are more than 20 ethnic groups like the
Cebuano, Ilocano, Sambal, Igorot and etc. The ethnic group that we have here in the Cordillera
Administrative Region are the Igorots. Igorot is then divided into six ethnolinguistic groups, the
bontoc, ibaloi, isneg, kalinga, Ifugao and kankanaey. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School
of Public Health, no matter what an individual BMI is, the risk of developing different diseases
such as diabetes and heart diseases are significantly higher in some ethnic groups (Deurenberg-
Yap M, Schmidt G, van Staveren WA, Deurenberg P, 2000) Diet plays a major role on why
there are unhealthy individuals in the CAR. Igorots are known to love dishes that are salty like
the pinikpikan and the etag which is made from a salted meat that that is preserved under the sun.
These type of food are very rich in sodium that could increase the risk of obesity. According to
the 2015 survey of Food and Nutrition Research Institute, 34.5 percent of the region’s total
population are either obese or overweight. The region ranked third with highest overweight and
obesity among adults. Benguet, where Baguio city is located has 36.2 percentage of obese and
10.9 percentage of overweight. The city of pines has more than 800 police officers and they are
very diverse when we talk about ethnic groups.
