Purattasi Thiruvonam. Most of us have many questions as follows.

1.2 SOME BACKGROUND

• Swami Desikan was born on Purattasi Thiruvonam at Thoopul village 750 years ago.
Swami Desikan Avathara utsavam which is celebrated in all temples & houses in grand
manner.
• Thoopul is a small village near Kanchi which is one of the 108 Divya Desam and the birth
place of Swami Vedanta Desikan. Thoopul has the temple of Vilakoli Emperuman i.e
Deepa Prakasan. Thoopul hosts the grand Avathara Mandapam of Swami Desikan with
pictures of Desikan’s Divya charitham.
• Swami Desikan is blessing us today in Thoopul kshethram in Archavatharam (Vigraha
Form).
• Swami Desikan ThiruAvathara Utsavam is celebrated in a grand manner for 10 days
with purappadu. On the thirunatchathiram day, Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam
to Perumal, Piratti, Azhwar & Acharyas, followed by Thirumanjanam, Purappadu,
Sattrumurai and Ghosti Theertha prasadam.
• Mangalasasanam is the utsavam in which Azhwars and Acharyas visit Perumal Piratti
Sannidhi to get their grace. Divine hymns are sung on this great occasion based on who
is visiting which Sannidhi.
• Swami Desikan Mangalasasanam is a grand utsavam of Swami Desikan visiting Perumal,
Piratti, Azhwar, Acharya Sannidhi to get their grace by singing divine stotras in
respective Sannidhi. This utsavam happens on Swami Desikan’s Thirunatchathiram every
year i.e on Purattasi Shravanam(Thiruvonam). It is celebrated in different manner in
different Divya Desam.
• True Acharya is one who follows and makes his shishyas also follow the path of dharma.
Swami Desikan does this Mangalasasanam to show his Adiyars on how to have the
darshan of Perumal, how to enter the temple, what is the order we need to visit the
sannidhi, what pasuram to recite and how to enjoy the divine beauty of Varadan.
• Swami Desikan Mangalasasanam is completely based on Swami’s Sankalpa
Suryodayam.
o In the second Act of Sankalpa Suryodayam, Acharya (Ramanujar) honors his
Shishya(Desikan) who wins over the debate with opponents.
o Sankalpa Suryodayam also details various Divya Desa Mangalasasanam with
pasuram for each of the kshethram. The same is followed during Desikan
Mangalasasanam.
o Sankalpa Suryodayam also details how a Jeevan who has got Mukti, travels from
this (materialistic) Prakruthi Mandalam through Archiradhi Margam, welcomed
by Adhivahikas, crosses Viraja river and then reaches the destination of Sri
Vaikuntam to stay with Perumal and Piratti forever. Swami Desikan
mangalasasanam is a picturization of this travel of a muktha Jeevan.
• As in Hasthigiri Mahatmiyam i.e. Kshetra Mahatmiyam of Kanchi, Deva Guru
Bruhaspathi (Acharya for Devas) is said to be doing Thiruvaradanam to Varadan on
Purattasi Thiruvonam. Sura means Devas and the Acharya of Devas is thus said to be
doing Thiruvaradanam. BhuSurar refers to Vishnu Bhakthas i.e. Deva’s who live on
earth, who are Prapannas i.e. Varadan’s Devotees. The Acharya of Bhusurar, Swami

Desikan does mangalasasanam on this same auspicious day. What a great Bhaghyam
for all Desika Adiyars! We cannot see Bruhaspathi doing aradhanam but we all can
enjoy Swami Desikan doing mangalasasanam at Varadan temple.
• Brahma, Gajendran, Bruhaspathi and Ananthazhwan are worshipping Varadan in the 4
yugas.

1.3 SWAMI DESIKAN THIRUAVATHARA UTSAVAM

Swami Desikan Thirunatchathiram is celebrated in grand manner in all Divya Kshetram. Swami
Desikan ThiruAvathara Utsavam is celebrated in a grand manner for 10 days with purappadu.
On the thirunatchathiram day, Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam to Perumal, Piratti,
Azhwar Acharyas, followed by Thirumanjanam, Purappadu, Sattrumurai and Ghosti Theertha
prasadam. Some high-level details as below.
1.3.1 Thiruvahindrapuram Desikan Utsavam

At Thiruvahindrapuram (at very high level),

• Purattasi Thiruvonam celebrations starts with vishwaroopam.
• On that day, Swami Desikan adorns 12 Thiruman during which Panniru Namam is recited.
• At 4 AM, Swami Desikan in RathnaAngi gives darshan from Kannadi arai followed by veda
prabanda satrumurai. Then, Swami Desikan gets ready and Yoga Hayagreevar is also ready
in Pallakku.
• Both climb Oushadhagiri hill, recitations of Desika Stotras like Hayagriva Stothram, Garuda
Panchasat are done during Hayagrivan Mangalasasanam on the Hill with grand welcome
and grand saatrumurai.
• Yoga Hayagrivar and Swami Desikan climb down the hill which has 74 steps. Red
Carpet(ratna kambalam) is placed on the steps. It is a treat to watch Swami climbing down
the hill, with great music, yecharikkai for each of the 74 steps. Watching Padi Sevai
Utsavam, Swami Desikan Climbing down Oushadhagiri hill is one grand utsavam every
Desika adiyar wants to enjoy. This utsavam happens at Thiruvahindrapuram in the morning.
• This is followed by, Mangalasasanam by Swami Desikan to all the Sannidhi down the hill i.e.
Devanathan, Thaayar Sannidhi and other Sannidhi where Stotra Paatam are recited in grand
manner in respective Sannidhi.
• This is followed by grand Thirumanjanam,evening Purappadu in pallakku, Satrumurai and
Ghosti. All these celebrations go on till 5 AM next morning.

1.3.2 Thoopul Desikan Utsavam

At Thoopul,
• Swami Desikan Avathara Utsavam is celebrated at Thoopul for 10 days prior to
Thirunatchathiram and Desikan’s grand Purappadu happens twice every day in Varadan’s
Maada Veedhi.
• On the grand day of Thirunatchathiram after mangalasasasanam and Satrumurai at
Thoopul, Thoopul Swami Desikan does mangalasasanam at Kanchi Varadan Sannidhi. This is
famously known as Thoopul Swami Desikan Mangalasaasana Utsavam at Kanchi. Thus,
Thoopul Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam to Deepa Prakasan at Thoopul in the
morning and then Travels to Kanchi to do Mangalasasanam to Perarulalan who is residing
on the Hasthigiri Hill.
• After Mangalasasanam, Desikan and Varadan climb down the hill. Watching Swami Desikan
and Varadan climbing down the hill is another grand utsavam every Desika adiyar wants to
enjoy. Swami Desikan climbing down the hill happens at Kanchi in the afternoon.
• Having darshan of Swami Desikan in the Kacchi Vaaithaan Mandapam was considered
equivalent to doing Rahasya grantha kalakshepam (Learning) under an Acharya.
• This is also followed by Ghanda Podi utsavam to Deepa Prakaasan and Swami Desikan the
next day at Thoopul.

1.3.3 Thiruvallur Desikan Utsavam

At Thiruvallur,
• Swami Desikan Mangalasasanam is conducted in grand manner in the morning with Stotra
Paatam recitations, Swami Desikan visits all the Azhwar, Acharya, Perumal Piratti Sannidhi
to get their grace and accepts all the mariyadhai.
• This is followed by a grand thirumanjanam.
• Evening grand Sattrumurai happens. During this Sattrumurai, recitation of all the slokams
from Srimath Rahasyathraya Saaram is done which is a uniqueness at Thiruvallur.

1.3.4 Kanchi Kovil Desikan Utsavam

At Kanchi, after Thoopul Desikan Mangalasasanam is completed, celebrations for Kovil Desikan
starts with Thiruppavai Sattrumurai, followed by Varadan and Kovil Desikan Purappadu to
Thiruvadi kovil and then Sattrumurai for Kovil Desikan.

1.3.5 Sriperumbhudur Desikan Sannidhi Utsavam

At Sriperumbhudur Desikan Sannidhi, Thiruavathara utsavam is celebrated with grand
mangalasasanam, Thirumanjanam, Purapaadu of Desikan and Bhashyakaarar and a grand
Sattrumurai which goes on till next day morning.

1.4 TWO MANGALASASANAMS HAILED BY OUR ACHARYAS

Two divya kshethram are specially given importance by our acharyas, when it comes to Swami
Desikan Thirunatchathiram - Thiruvahindrapuram and Kanchi. Learning Srimadh Rahasyatraya
Saaram through kalakshepam was a pre-requisite in those days to perform Bharanyasam. Elders
used to say that if a person had enjoyed these two utsavams then he is ready to perform
Bharanyasam. Such is the greatness of the avathara utsavam at Thiruvahindrapuram and
Kanchi.
• Desikan climbing down the Oushadhagiri Hill along with Yoga Hayagrivan is a specialty at
Thiruvahindrapuram.
• Desikan at Kacchi Vaaithan Mandapam and Varadan & Desikan Climbing down Hasthigiri
are specialties at Kanchi.

In this writeup, we are going to enjoy Swami Desikan Mangalasasana Utsavam at Thoopul &
Kanchi since Varadan is a Perumal who hails Acharya Swami Desikan with so love, affection and
many gifts like a father celebrating the birthday of his son.

1.5 THOOPUL SWAMI DESIKAN MANGALASASANA UTSVAM AT THOOPUL & KANCHI

1.5.1 Swami Desikan @ Thoopul on Purattasi Shravanam
• Swami Desikan returns to Thoopul late night after Thirumbhukaal on the previous day of
Thirunatchathiram.
• Thirunatchathiram day begins with a grand Thirumanjanam for Hayagreevan and Swami
Desikan at Swami Desikan’s Avathara Utsava Thirumaligai at Thoopul.

• Swami Desikan gets ready in Anjali Hastam to perform Mangalasasanam . Swami

Desikan has hailed the greatness of Anjali which is the only resort for Saranagathas in his
work Anjali vaibhavam.

• First, Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam to Deepa Prakasan utsavar at Deepa

Prakaasan Sannidhi.

• Swami Desikan visits Andal Sannidhi at Thoopul for mangalasasanam

• Swami Desikan does Moolavar Maragathavalli Thayar Mangalasasanam and SriStuthi is
recited.
• Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam at Moolavar Deepa Prakaasan Sannidhi at
Thoopul.
• Then Swami Desikan does Dik Mangalasasanam to Divya Desa Perumal of Kovil,
Thirumalai, Perumal Kovil, Thiruvahindrapuram, Sampath Kumaran. This happens in a
pandal in front of the temple. Respective divya desa emperuman stotram are recited
during this Dik Mangalasasanam by Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan comes back to Avathaaram Mandapam and one can see Anushtana
Nadavaapi i.e well were Swami Desikan did his anustanams.
• Swami Desikan Stotram are recited with grand Ghosthi at Avathaara Mandapam along
with Deepa Prakasan. It is true bliss for every adiyar to recite (anusandhanam) in this
wonderful divine occasion. Followed by Grand Satrumurai and Mariyadhai to Swami
Desikan, followed by Theertha prasadham to the Ghosti.

1.5.2 Swami Desikan from Thoopul To KANCHI ON Purattasi Shravanam

• Meanwhile, at Kanchi, the usual vishwaroopam, daily Sattrumurai and temple activities
are done. That day, specialty is that First Theertham & Satari which is usually for
Thathacharyas is for Thoopul Swami Desikan on Thirunatchathiram Utsavam. Hence,
Varadan eagerly waits to see his loving child Swami Desikan.
• Kanchi Varadan Sannidhi has two Golden Pallakku(Palanquin). One for Nachiyar
Thirukolam and another for Thotta Utsavam. Varadan sends his Golden Palanquin to
Thoopul for Swami Desikan to visit Kanchi. 20 jadai Kudai, chaamaram, Vathiyam
everything including Anantha kotthu Parijanam i.e kainkaryaparar are sent by Varadan
to Thoopul as a Bahumanam(gift) for Swami Desikan. What a love Varadan showers on
this Acharya SarvaBouman? Like how a king sends everything to hail an acharya, here
Varadan is hailing Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan who is usually seen in Upadesa Mudhirai, is already in Anjali Mudhirai
since he is going to do Mangalasasanam i.e. having darshan of Perarulaalan. Note:
Similarly, when we enter any temple we all should have the darshan in Anjali hastam
like Desikan. Thus, Vanakathin Vaibhavam is shown by Swami Desikan as in his work
Anjalai vaibhavam too.

• Swami Desikan that day adorns the crown/kreedam called “Thoppi Haaram” i.e. Hat
like Thiruvabharanam.
• Swami Desikan’s grand Purappadu starts from Thoopul to Kanchi with all Bahumanam in
a Golden Pallakku sent by Kanchi Perarulalan for his loving child Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan’s Padukai i.e. Nayinarachariar also joins Swami Desikan in this
procession.
• Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam at Parakala Matam Hayagrivan Sannidhi.
• Swami Desikan also showers his anugraham to his son Kumara Nayanachariyar and his
shishya BrahmaTantra Swathanthrar at Hayagrivar Sannidhi.
• Swami Desikan starts from Thoopul to Kanchi with huge white umberallas, Kattiyam for
Desikan, Vaana Vedikai/sky shots, Ubhaya Veda Ghosti i.e. Ubhaya vedanta parayana
Ghosti.
• Divya Prabhandam Thodakkam starts from Yathothakaari Sannidhi.
• Desikan Adiyars welcome and join Desikan on the way to Kanchi.

1.5.3 Swami Desikan @ Kanchi Varadan Temple

• Varadan Sannidhi Theru(Street) awaits to welcome our Acharya Swami Desikan with
grand decorations, instruments, crackers & sky shots.
• Vardhan Sannidhi today has only one Thiruchinnam since the other one was gifted by
Varadan to Desikan. Varadan’s loving child is Swami Desikan and hence like a father who
waits to see the son on his birthday, Varadan waits eagerly to see Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan Mangalasasanam is one of the 5 days in a year where Desika Stotra
Paatam are recited at Varadan Sannidhi.

• Once, Swami Desikan enters Raja gopuram at Kanchi Varadharajan temple, Swami
Desikan is handed over by the Vaikaasana Archakas of Desikan Sannidhi to
Pancharathra Archakas of Thevaperumal Sannidhi. Varadan’s Archakas thus perform
all the aradhanai for Swami Desikan during the rest of Desikan’s stay at Perumal Kovil.
• Swami Desikan in Anjali Mudhirai, arrives to Vahana Mandapam and Swami Desikan is
shifted from the Golden Palakku to a small Dhandikai which can be easily carried in
shoulders.
• Swami Desikan’s Paadukai is Naiyinarachariar who will be placed at Kovil Desikan
Sannidhi.
• At Vahana Mandapam, Kovil Desikan Sannidhi - Mariyadhai is done for Thatha Desikan
with grand Veda Parayanam Ghosti. Then Dharisana Thambhulam is given to Swami
Desikan.
• Swami Desikan’s Padukai ( Nayaninarachariar) stays at Kovil Desikan Sannidhi. Note:
Can’t go and have darshan of Perumal with one’s own padhukai.
• Then Stotra Pata Ghosti Starts with recitation of “Sriman Venkatanatharya……. “
Thaniyan followed by Varadharaja Panchasath.
• Swami is welcomed every step with “Yecharikkai”.
• After Dwaja Sthamba Pradakshinam, Abheethi Sthavam & Guruparamparai
Anusanthanam is done by Swami Desikan. Note: when we visit temples, we need to
think about our Acharya Guruparamparai at Dwaja Sthamba. Desikan shows the same to
us here.
• Note: The 4 places where we need to prostrate(Sevikkanam) when we visit Perumal
kovil are Dwaja Sthambham, Thondaradipodi, Kachivaithaan Mandapam and Kolapadi
mandapam.

• Swami Desikan enters the beautiful Thondaradipodi Mandapam (Udhaya Banu

Mandapam) and offers his namaskaram to DwaraPalaka. Swami Desikan enjoys the
details of this mandapam which is built in one’s heart as in Sankalpa Suryodayam 7th
Act / Ankam which is also hailed by Mayan & Vishwakarma. The walls of this mandapam
is said to have holes in the shape cow’s eyes i.e. Gavaksham.
• Swami Desikan enters Yamunai Thuraivan Thiruchchuttru and does mangalasasanam of
Punya Koti Vimanam.

• Swami Desikan goes to Raman Sannidhi and has the anugraham of Raman along with
Theertham, malai, Parivattam, Satari by reciting Raghuveera Gadhyam Stotra Paatam.
Stotrams related to Ram as in Dasavathara Stotram, Paduka Sahasram, Raghuveera
Gadhyam, Abhaya Pradhana Saaram, Varadharaja Panchasath, Sankalpa Suryodhayam
are recited by adiyars.

• Then Sevai at ThiruAnanthazhwan Sannidhi where Shubhashita Nivi is recited during

malai mariyaadhai.
• Grand Sattrumurai, Mariyadhai, Theertham Satari and Ghosti happens in all Sannidhi
where Satari is available and Malai Mariyaadhai happens in other Sannidhi.
• Then at Yamunai Thuraivar Thirumuttram, storas including Tatva Mukta Kalaapam are
recited.
• Then Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanam at Karia Manicka Perumal Sannidhi by
reciting respective slokams. Dhyana mangala Slokam as in Karia Manicka Mandiram are
recited.
• Then Swami Desikan enters Madaipalli Parakaaram Thiruchuttru which also has the
1000 kaal Mandapam.
• Swami Desikan visits Madaipalli to get the grace of Madaipalli Nachiyar where
Saranagathi Deepikai Slokams are recited. SriBhashyakaarar's priya shishya Madaipalli
Achan's i.e Kidambhi Achan paramparai is Swami Desikan's maternal uncle Appular from
whom Swami learnt all the Shastraartham. “யதிவரனார்
மடப்பள்ளி வந்தமணம் எங்கள்
வார்ததயுள்மன்னியதத “Remembering all these, Swami Desikan does
Mangalasasanam to Madaipalli Nachiyar at Madaipalli. Some more slokam as in Nyaya
Siddhanjanam are also recited here.
• Swami Desikan then has the Sevai of Thayar Sannidhi Kalyana Koti Vimanam
• Swami Desikan visits Kannan Sannidhi where Sankalpa Suryodayam Slokams and Gopala
Vimsati are recited.
• Swami Desikan enters Perundevi Thayar sannidhi to perform his Mangalasasanam, the
place where he recited SriStuthi which resulted in Kanaka Dhara – showers of gold coins.
Perundevi Thayar waits for her loving son and Swami Desikan hails Piratti and Varadan
through his Sri Sookthis. Kaivilakku is shown and Piratti sevai is done for Swami Desikan.

• After Mangalasasanam, Swami Desikan is now at Maha Navami Mandapam /

Vellikkizhamai Unjal Mandapam of Thayar. Grand Ghosti with Theertham, Malai,
Parivattam, satari and arulappadu happens here for our Swami who is none other than
"Kanja Thirumangai Ugakka vanthon". SriStuthi and stotras on Piratti as in Satha
Dhushani are recited.
• Swami Desikan accepts mariyadhai at Garudan Sannidhi where Garuda Dhandakam,
Garuda Panchasath stotra Paatam are recited.

• Swami Desikan hails Singapiran Aalaripiran Nrusimhan who sat on the banks of
Vegavathi river through his Kaamashikashtakam stotra patam. Slokam as in Varadharaja
Panchasath, Daya Sathakam, Sankalpa Suryodayam are also recited followed by
Theertham Satari Ghosti at Nrusimhan Sannidhi.
• Then Swami Desikan accepts mariyadhai at Andal Sannidhi. Ghodha Stuthi is recited
here.
• Then arulappadu at Senai Mudaliyar Sannidhi
• Swami Desikan is now at the bottom of the Hasthigiri Hillock. Perarulalan is awaiting
eagerly on the hill to see his loving child Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan does his Mangalasasanam to the Hasthigiri Hill. Swami Desikan hails
about Hasthigiri in his Hamsa Sandesham which is recited before climbing the hill.
• A jeevan is the 25th thathvam known as Chit, climbs 24 steps which represents 24 Achit
thathvams to climb the hillock to have the darshan of the 26th Thathvam Varadan.
Swami Desikan's climb to Hasthigiri explains the same.
• In Sankalpa Suryodayam, there is a scene where Vishnu Bhakthi enters Sumathi’s
Soudham (anthapuram). Here Swami Desikan is the Vishnu Bhakthi who is entering the
Hasthigiri hillock of Varadan.
• Mangalasasanam to the steps i.e. Padi are also done. Paramapadha Sopanam explains
the steps through which we attain Perumal. While climbing any steps we need some
grip and Karunai of Piratti (as in KamalaSahaya) are the steps which we Jeevan’s hold as
we climb the steps to reach Perumal.

• After climbing the Hasthigiri hillock, Swami Desikan first goes to Kacchi Vaithan
Mandapam where Nadadur Ammal used to conduct Kalakshepam. This is the same
place where Nadadur Ammal blessed Swami Desikan with the following words,
प्रतिष्ठापिि वेदान्ि प्रिीक्षिि बहिर्मिः
भय
ू ाः त्रैपवध्य र्ान्यत्वं भरू ि कल्याण भाजनर् ्
• Guruparamparai Slokam recitations are done at Kacchi Vaaiththan mandapam to get
the grace of all Azhwar & Acharyas. Note: We should also visit Kacchi Vaaiththan
Mandapam and then need to go for Moolavar darshan as shown by Swami Desikan.
• Slokam from Srimadh Rahasyatraya Saaram, Sankalpa Suryodayam, Seshwara
Meemamsa are recited while at Hasthigiri including the blessings of Nadadur Ammal to
Swami Desikan.

• Varadan is eagerly waiting to see Swami Desikan. Now our Thalaivar (Swami Desikan) is
going to meet out PerumThalaivar(Perarulalan). This divine celestial meeting, starts
with Suprabhatham for Perumal, conversation between the Divine father and his son,
Desikan offering his mangalasasanam to Thirumarbhu Nachiyar, Kaivilakku Sevai is done
for Swami Desikan.
• Swami Desikan then does mangalasasanam to Varadan as in அருள் வரதர்
னிலையிைக்கி ைம் பெனனா னமிழ் ந்தததன". வதேப்பெருமாள்
திருேடியில் ஸ்ோமி வதசிகனை அர்ச்சக்காள்
எழுந்தருளப்ெணுோர்கள். Stotras are recited including Nyasa Dasakam
(Adaikalapatthu) and many others. Everyone will darshan of this divine experience. This
will go on for 1.5 hrs. to 2 hrs.
• Swami Desikan now is at Kola Padi. Varadharaja Panchasat is recited with maalai,
parivattam, Pavithra maalai, chandhanam, mariyadhai, Theertham, Satari and Ghosti.
First Theertham of the day is given to Swami Desikan on this day.
• One can see sweat is Swami Desikan’s Thirumuga mandalam. If we stand next to
Swami, we can feel the presence of Swami.

• Swami Desikan then visits Kacchi Vaaiththan Mandapam where Perumal revealed the
“Aaru Vaarthai” to Thirukacchi Nambhigal. Stotra padam are recited. Prasadam from
Perumal sannidhi and Thaligai is offered to Desikan here.
• Meanwhile, Perumal will be ready in KolaPadi in Kannan Alankaaram to prove “கரி
கிரி வமல் கண்ணன் நின்று காக்கின்றாவை”. Perumal on this day adorns
simple but special abharanam like Mayil peeli, savuri kondai, Kanakaambaram and just
one kodai. Perumal adorns just one maalai on this day when he is about the climb down
the hill and that too to honour Swami Desikan.
• After receiving all the Bahumanam of Thevaperumal, Swami Desikan climbs down the
hasthigiri with complete joy of having done the Mangalasasanam. Varadan is decked
with special jewels of Sowri Kondai and Mayil Thogai with Kanakaambharam and is in
joy since he has graced his loving child Swami Desikan. It is a grand feast to the eyes to
see Swami Desikan and Varadan enjoying each other during this Divine
Mangalasasanam.
• They both climb down the hill and this is a grand feast for our eyes and to that
mesmerizing music is also blown once they climb down the hill.

• Swami Desikan enjoys Varadan with Ubhaya Nachimar and it is a feast for all Desika
Adiyar to have this darshan of Swami Desikan enjoying Varadan and Ubhaya Nachimar.
Also, Swami Desikan enjoys Varadan gracing his adiyars. What a divine sight to see !

• Varadan adorns peacock feather and Swami Desikan questions in Gopala Vimsati on
who drew the picture of Kannan decked up with peacock feather in his hearts. Swami
Desikan later answers for this in Yathiraja Sapthathi that it is none other than
SriBhashyakaarar.
• Swami Desikan does Mangalasasanm at Malayala Nachiyar Sannidhi.
• Swami Desikan enjoys Varadan's pinnazhagu பின்னழகு which mesmerized all the
Acharyas and Azhwars too.

• SriPaada Kainkaryaparas are skilled in their task and do this Sri Paadam Thaangi
kainkaryam with complete joy and shraddhai and this journey from the Hasthigiri Hillock
to Abhisheka Mandapam takes close to 1.5 hours with music and great anubhavam
which one just need to experience. "அனசந்து அனசந்து, அனுெேிச்சு
அனுெேிச்சு, அேர்கள் ேரும் அழனக அடியார் குழாம் ரசிப்ெர்" -
What a blissful experience!
• Swami Desikan is now at Abhisheka Mandapam along with Varadan opposite to each
other.
• Varadan gives various Bahumanam to Siddhantha Sthapana SarvaBhoumar Swami
Desikan. This is same as the honour explained in Sankalpa Suryodayam, given by
Acharya to his Shishya for winning over the opponents. Few more Sankalpa
Suryodhayam Stotras are recited on this grand occasion.

• Varadan gives the only garland which he was wearing to his loving child Swami Desikan
as a Bahumanam.
• Vardhan orders for Grand Pushpavrushti "ஸித்தாந்த ஸ்தாெந
ஸார்ேபெௌமர், வேங்கடநாதன் சிரஸில் மீ ண்டும் மீ ண்டும் புஷ்ொ
வ்ருஷ்டி நன்கு ேருஷிக்கட்டும்." Grand Pushpavrushti happens to Swami
Desikan with all divine instruments in the background.
• Swami Desikan Thirunaal Paatu by SriNayinarachaariyar which hails the greatness of
Purattasi Thiruvonam is recited.
வாதாசனவரர் இவர் என வருமா ொடியம் வலக பெறு நாள்
வகுளாெரணெ் பெருமாள் தமிழின் வாசி அறிந்திடு நாள்
தெத அதெதம் பிரமம் எனா வலக பிரமம் பதளிவித்திடு நாள்
தெச்சு ஒன்றுக்குச் சததூஷணிலயெ் தெசிய ததசிக நாள்
தீது ஆகிய ெை மாயக் கலைகலளச் சிக்பகன பவன்றிடு நாள்
திக்கு எட்டும் புகழ் சீொடியத்லதத் பதளிய உலரத்திடு நாள்
ஓதாது ஓதும் தவதாந்த ஆரியன் உதயம் பசய் திடு நாள்
உத்தமம் ஆன புரட்டாசித் திருதவாணம் எனும் திருநாதள.
• Desika Adiyar enjoy this grand occasion and have darshan of Swami Desikan and
Varadan.
• Swami Desikan starts to take leave i.e. பிரியா விடை Piriya Vidai from Perumal at
Abhisheka Mandapam. This piriya Vidai from Abhisheka Mandapam to Thondaradipodi
takes minimum 1.5 hrs. Varadan and Desikan also hesitate to leave each other since
they need to wait for another year to enjoy this mahotsavam again. Truly a Priyavidai
with adiyar saying "Varada .....Desika.." Tears roll in Varadan eyes, Desikan eyes and
also in the eyes of the devotees who watch this blissfull Piriya Vidai.
• Desika adiyar who enjoy this sevai, gets the anubhavam of enjoying Swami Desikan's Sri
Sookthis and will attain moksham for sure.
• With Srivaishnava Samruddhi everywhere, Desikan adiyars feel that this grand Sevai of
Swami Desikan and Varadan is same as the life in Vaikunta i.e Swami Desikan
Managalaasaasanam is Vaikunta Vaazhvu for Desika adiyars.

• Swami Desikan says "Vaikunta VaasEapi mE nAbhilAsha:" in Varadharaja Panchasat 49th

Slokam i.e Because of enjoying Varadan's dhivya Thirumeni Swami Desikan had no
desire for moksham i.e Sri Vaikuntam.
तनिन्ििं तनपवमशिस्तत्वदीयर् ् अस्तिष्ृ ट चिन्िािदर्ाभभरूप्यर् ् ।
सत्यं शिे वािण शैलनाथ वैकुण्ठ वासेऽपि न र्ेऽभभलाषः ॥
• After taking leave form Varadan, Swami Desikan starts his journey happily and swiftly
through Pushkarani Pradakshinam visits Venugopalan, Varahan and Ranganathan
Sannidhi.
• Then through thottam Swami Desikan visits Chakrathazhwar Sannidhi for Sevai where
theertham, satari & ghosti happens.
• Then Swami Desikan visits Prapanna Jana Santhana Kootasthar Swami Nammazhwar's
Sannidhi for Mangalasasanam. Here Dramidoupanishad Tarparya Ratnaavali,
Dramidoupanishad Saaram, Paduka Sahasram, Sankalpa Suryodayam, Yathiraja
Sapthathi Guruparamparai slokams, Subhashita Nivi are recited. Mangalasasanam for
Nammazhwar, Madhurakavi Azhwar and Nathamunigal happens here.
• Then Swami Desikan visits Azhwar Pradakshikam, Azhwar, Acharya & Swami
Ramanujar Sannidhi. Swami Desikan has hailed Ramanujar as the Central Pendant in the
necklace of Azhwar Acharyas in Yathiraja Sapthathi. One can see the same at Kanchi
temple, with Ramanujar in the middle among Azhwar and Acharyas on either side.
Mangalasasanam for Alavandar, SriBhashyakaarar happens here with Grand Satrumurai,
Theertham and Ghosti. Alavandar Stotra Ratnam slokas, Yathiraja Sapthathi,Thatva
Teeka, Adhikarana Saaravali, Srimadh Saaram Slokams, Raksha Grantha Slokama are
also recited here.
• Desika Dinacharya by Kumara Nayinaracharya which hails Swami Desikan is also recited.
• Desikan is now back at Kovil Desikan Sannidhi, where honour by Swami Desikan for
Thatha Desikan & Ammangar is offered.
1.5.4 Swami Desikan Purappadu back to Thoopul
• Swami Desikan enters Vahana mandapam where Pushpa Palakku is waiting for a grand
purapaadu.
• Swami Desikan enjoys a grand purappadu in the 4 Mada Veedhi's in a grand pushpa
pallakku.

1.5.5 GandhaPodi Utsavam @ Thoopul Next morning

• Next day, Swami Desikan enjoys Ghandha Podi utsavam along with Deepa Prakasan at
Thoopul.

• Heart filled with joy of having this great darshan, all the Desika adiyars take Piriyavidai
from Swami Desikan.
