Government

Labuan is one of the Malaysian federal government territories. The island is administered by the federal government through
the Ministry of Federal Territories. Labuan Corporation is the municipal government for the island and is headed by a
chairman who is responsible for development and administration of the island. Labuan has one representative in each of the
Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament. Typically, the current member of parliament of Labuan will be appointed to become
chairman of Labuan Corporation.

The island is represented in the lower house of parliament by MP Roszman Datuk Haji Isli and in the upper house by Senator
Yunus Kurus. As you can see here, it is the list of administrator of Labuan Corporation from 2001 until today.

Capital of Labuan

Victoria or Victoria Town is the capital of the Federal Territory of Labuan in Malaysia, an island group off the north coast of
Borneo. It is in the southeast corner of Labuan and its Malay name, Bandar Labuan, is more commonly used by the locals than
Victoria.

Layang-layang beach

Layang-Layang Beach is a popular place on weekends. Its sandy white beaches is tempting, inviting one to lie down and soak
up the sun with the sound of waves lapping at water's edge. Cycling paths and picnic tables are shaded by leafy trees. In this
area too can be found many food stalls with live musical bands performing every weekend.
Horse riding and cycling are some of the popular leisure activities on this beach.The Manikar Beach Resort is also located
around the same area. The best place to take pictures because of the beautiful scenery.

The island is known as one of the world’s best dive spots with its breathtaking underwater scenery of colorful coral walls and
the perfect clear water.

Rusukan Besar Island

With an area of 14 hectares, Rusukan Besar Island has beautiful scenery. , you only need to board the Boat in 7-10
minutes. You can enjoy the beauty of the island by doing activities such as diving, snorkeling, scuba diving, camping,
sightseeing of flora and fauna, kayaks and many other activities. In addition, chalets are also provided for those who want to
spend the night there.

Labuan War Cemetery

The war memorial in Labuan is a historic site to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers, both locals and international, who fought
against enemies of Malaya back in the day. Among those buried are British, Australian and Indian soldiers who were killed
during the Japanese occupation and those who died during the Sandakan Death Marches. The war cemetery was constructed
by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and it’s a good place to understand the darker days of history.
Surrender point

Another site for history buffs is Surrender Point, which is where the Japanese surrendered themselves to Australian soldiers on
10 Sept 1945. To get into the details, Lieutenant General Masao Baba, the Supreme Commander of Japanese Forces and also
the Commander of the Japanese 7 Army at that time, brought himself and his comrades to this very spot. Before this,
Australian soldiers had overrun the Japanese troops to secure rubber and oil resources as well as major bases.

Labuan botanical

Located close to Labuan Town just 5 minutes' drive away, Labuan Botanical Gardens was previously the grounds of the
Government House that is locally known as the 'Bumbung 12' .The 12th roof was also the home of Sir James Brooke and was
once the home of King Edward VIII (The Prince of Wales) upon his arrival in Labuan in 1922.

By 1945, however, the building and most of the surrounding area had been bombed by allied forces. All that remains is a
building and a water tank.

The site now houses a beautiful botanical garden with a multi-species flower garden, herb garden, an artificial lake with
bridges across it, reflexology trails, gazebo, children's playground and tree lodge.

Birds Park

The Labuan Bird Park is located near the Chimney at Tanjung Kubong. It has three large dome-shaped cages surrounded by
beautiful landscaping. There are up to 580 of birds available in the bird park, some of them include the famous Cockatoo,
kingfishers, peacocks and hornbills. Besides sightseeing, visitors can enjoy the daily performances featuring live bird shows,
taking pictures and gaining knowledge about the exotic bird species.

The Labuan museum

The Labuan Museum, located in the heart of the city center, was officially opened on October 8, 2004. The museum was built
since the 1950s during the British rule. You will find stories about history in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

The Labuan Marine

Just east of the city center, the Labuan Marine Museum is housed in the International Sea Sports Complex. The museum
contains an interesting array of artifacts from shipwrecks . The museum has several exhibits catering to children and even an
aquarium where they may touch live sea cucumbers and starfish.

Labuan Chimney

Labuan Chimney is one of the most recognizable and unique landmarks in the Federal Territory of Labuan. The red stone tower
or better known as the "sandstone" is believed to have been built since 1900 when there was a coal mining activity in Tanjung
Kubong. He won the "Green Apple Award" in London in 2013 in the "Built Environment and Architectural Heritage"
category . This historical story can be seen at the Chimney Museum.

Labuan Square

Another one of the town’s landmarks is Labuan Square, a venue for various performances and events throughout the year.
Even if nothing’s on during your trip, you might be able to catch locals playing football at the field nearby.
Al-Jamek mosque

Opened to the public in 1988 by the then 8th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong,this mosque has a beautiful dome and minarets.The
architecture of the mosque has a combination of Turkish and Bruneian Malay influences,but the end result is a resemblance to
a spaceship or a giant shuttlecock.Inside the mosque are more stunning features.Non-Muslims are also allowed to enter
during non-praying hours.

The Labuan Clock

The Labuan Clock Tower is a beauty. It’s constructed in 2002 and is considered a replica of the original version. The original
clock tower which is located in Taman Antarabangsa, Borneo, was constructed in 1906 by Chee Swee Cheng, a Chinese
businessman. It’s the only structure that survived the bombings by Japanese troops in 1945. Even though it’s not the original,
do snap a picture in front of the Labuan Clock Tower.
