CHICKEN SITUATION REPORT

FOREWORD

This Chicken Situation Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by
type of chicken, volume of production, number of birds dressed in poultry dressing
plants, chicken meat imports, monthly average farmgate price, wholesale and retail
prices, and live Day-Old Chick (DOC).
The Livestock and Poultry Statistics Division (LPSD) of the PSA disseminates the
Chicken Situation Report annually, every March, covering the previous year (January
to December) as the reference period. The report is intended to serve as a ready
reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
The PSA would appreciate comments and suggestions from our data users and
readers for further improvement of this report.

CHICKEN SITUATION REPORT

TECHNICAL NOTES

The data in this report are collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through
the two (2) major surveys, namely:
1. Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the
four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS). It
consists of 14,612 sample households in 1,079 sample barangays nationwide;
and
2. Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) covering about 669 sample
layer farms and 931 broiler commercial farms and contract growers as of
January 2018.

Both surveys are conducted every quarter simultaneously every quarter in all provinces.

Another activity that supplements the data requirements of the livestock and poultry sub-
sector is the Compilation of Data from Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants
(CDSPDP). This covers around 1,272 Accredited (AAA and AA) and Locally Registered
Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the
National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

Concepts and Definitions

Backyard Farm refers to any farm or household whether farming or non-farming raising
at least one bird of animals and does not qualify as a commercial farm.
Commercial Farm refers to any broiler or layer farm which satisfied at least one of the
following conditions:
 Tending 500 layers or 1,000 broilers
 Tending 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination

Farmgate Price refers to the price received by poultry raisers for their produce at the
location of farm. Thus, marketing costs such as transport and other marketing cost (if
any) incurred in selling the produce are not included in the farmgate prices. Data are
generated from the Farmgate Price Survey (FPS) conducted by Price Statistics Division
(PSD) of PSA.
Imports refer to the number of day-old chicks and meat products originating from foreign
country. The data on imported day-old chicks was gathered from the Bureau of Animal
Industry – National Veterinary Quarantine Services (BAI-NVQS) while meat importation
data are compiled by the Trade Statistics Division (TSD) of PSA from the copies of
Import Entry and Internal Revenue Declaration collected from the Bureau of Customs
(BOC).

TECHNICAL NOTES -- Concluded

Inventory refers to the actual number of chicken in birds present in the farm as of a
specific reference date.
 Beginning Inventory is the number of animals present in the farm as of
the beginning of the reference period i.e for January to March the
beginning inventory is as of January 1.
 Ending Inventory is the number of remaining stocks present in the farm
as of the ending of the reference period i.e for January to March, the
remaining inventory is as of April 1.
Locally Registered Meat Establishment (LRME) refers to slaughterhouses, meat
processing plants, Poultry Dressing Plants, meat cutting plants and cold storages that
are allowed to operate by the city/municipal government but are not accredited by the
NMIS.
Poultry Dressing Plant (PDP) refers to premises that are approved and registered by
the controlling authority in which poultry are dressed for human consumption.
Retail Price refers to the prices at which retailers sell their goods or commodities to
consumers in the marketplace.
Supply and Disposition refers to a framework that explains the population dynamics of
animals in the farm including hatched live, deaths and losses, number of animals
dressed in the farm/household and sold live for dressing which serves as supporting
information or indicators to the volume of production estimates.
Value at Constant Price refers to the valuation of transactions, wherein the influence of
price change from base year to the current year has been removed.
Value at Current Price refers to the value based on prices during the reference year;
nominal year.
Value of Production refers to the value of the animal with reference to its farmgate
price. It is derived by multiplying the volume of production by its farmgate price.
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised birds disposed for dressing
which include birds shipped-out for dressing. This is expressed in metric tons, liveweight.
Wholesale Price refers to the price of unprocessed agricultural commodities which are
traded in major local/provincial market centers.

CHICKEN SITUATION REPORT

VALUE OF PRODUCTION
The gross value of chicken production in 2018 amounted to PhP 171.27 million at
current prices. It was up by 9.13 percent from the PhP 156.94 million recorded in 2017.
(M.T. Liveweight)
This was attributed to the improvements in volume of production and farmgate prices
during the year. Chicken egg gross receipt of PhP 53.41 million was 5.02 percent
higher than the previous year’s earnings of PhP 50.86 million. (Table 11)

Highest value of chicken production was recorded in October to December of 2018

with gross receipt of PhP 44.79 million. Gross receipt from chicken egg was also
highest in October to December of 2018 at PhP 13.84 million.

Chicken grossed PhP 103.72 million in 2018 at constant farmgate price. This recorded
an increase of 5.20 percent compared with the 2017 earnings of PhP 98.59 million.
Gross value of chicken egg was PhP 29.21 million or 8.38 percent higher than the
previous year’s record of PhP 26.95 million. (Table 12)

By quarter, the highest earning on chicken for meat at PhP 28.62 million was noted in
October to December. For chicken egg, the highest gross receipt was recorded in
January to March at PhP 7.62 million.

IMPORTS OF DAY-OLD CHICKS

Total day-old chicks (DOC) importation at 4.85 million birds significantly dropped by
46.02 percent in 2018 compared with the previous year’s arrival of 8.98 million birds.
Table 2.Volume of Imported Day-Old Chick Breeder, by Quarter, Philippines,
Importation of DOC broiler breeders declined by 47.83 percent from the
2014-2016
8.41 million birds in 2017 to 4.39 million birds in 2018. Lower importation was
(in birds)
noted for broiler parent stock (PS) and parent stock hatching egg (PS-HE) at
44.85 percent and 63.69 percent, respectively. However, imports for grand parent
stock (GPS) broiler at 787.55 thousand birds in 2018 went up by 29.68 percent
from the 2017 level of 607.31 thousand birds. (Table 13)

Importation of DOC layer parent stock was recorded at 460.05 thousand birds in 2018.
This was 19.34 percent lower than the previous year’s level of 570.36 thousand
birds.

IMPORTS OF CHICKEN MEAT

Chicken meat importation grew by 12.99 percent, from 221.96 thousand metric tons in
2017 to 250.78 thousand metric tons in 2018. Imports of chicken meat was recorded
highest in October to December of 2018 at 79.75 thousand metric tons. (Table 14)

Value of chicken meat imports in 2018, amounting to US$ 259.81 million, went
up by 16.93 percent compared with its 2017 level of US$ 222.19 million. CIF value
was highest in October to December at US$ 77.15 million.
