5 Transformer
Transformer is a static machine that transform electrical power from one circuit to
another circuit without changing the frequency. The working principle of transformer is based on
mutual induction. The efficiency of a transformer is above than 95%.These types of transformers
are called Distribution Transformer. The transformer manufactured in ELMETEC industry is 10
KVA TO 3500 KVA.

Types of Windings
There are three types of windings that prepare in ELMETEC industry.
Packet winding.
Disc winding.
Layer winding.

6.2 Enameled Wire
The enameled wire is a copper insulated wire that provide insulation and use in packet
winding. The size of this wire is according to transformer design and rating. The size of
enameled wire is
50 KVA 0.91mm
100 KVA 1.22mm
200 KVA 1.70mm

7 Core Stacking
Core is magnetic link between the two systems connected to the transformer. The core
material and its construction should be such that the maximum flux is created with minimum
magnetizing current and core loss. Steel core causes total flux linking of primary to secondary.
The high content of silicon increases the resistivity of the core, hence reduces the eddy current
loss. It also has a high permeability at low flux density and narrow hysteresis loop. The steel used
for cores may be hot or cold rolled. The cold rolled has more flux density (1.8T) than hot
rolled(1.45T) as it has better magnetic properties in the direction of rolling and it also reduces the
amount of core material. As the flux in the core is pulsating one, so cores must be laminated. The
laminations are put through annealing process. The thickness of lamination varies from 0.35mm
8|Page
to 0.5mm. These laminations are assembled in such a manner that there is no air gap between the
joints of two consecutive layers.
8 Machines
8.1 Sitting Line for Transformer Lamination Machine
This machine is used to cut the big roll of silicon steel sheet in required sizes according to
rating of the transformer. In this machine roll of silicon steel is placed on D coiler. Then the sheet
of silicon steel is passed through sensors and cutters. The cutters cut the silicon steel sheets
according to required design. Then silicon sheet is rolled on re-winder. The sensors are used to
provide flexibility and keep same speed of D coiler and reminder. The entire process is controlled
through PLC.

8.3 Manual Machine
In manual machines we cut silicon sheets in very small sizes that cannot possible on cut
to length line machine. These machines are operated manually. These machines cut the silicon
sheets according to transformer design perimeters that is length, width and angle.
9 Core Assembly
After the core stacking is completed then we mounted channel on core to hold the core and
use bridges and blocks to provide spacing between core windings and channel. If we do not use
channel to hold the core then winding and core of the transformer are separated in very less time.
The channel whole sizes is

10.2 Oil Filling Process
Oil is filled into the tank after the clearance checking. The oil used in transformer tank is
mineral oil or silicon oil. The properties of silicon oil is better than mineral oil but silicon oil is
expensive than mineral oil. The oil used in transformer for cooling and insulation purpose. When
tank is covered through top lid then pressure test perform on tank. After that oil fill into the tank
under vacuum on it.
14 | P a g e
10.3 Top Lid
In taking top lid is used for covered the tank and consist on LT Bushing, HT Bushing
and tap changer.HT and LT Bushing made of porcelain material due to physical strength and
protect against water if rubber washer does not work. The HT Bushing is use 11KV line. The
LT Bushing is used for 220v line. The bushing is also used for bring the winding terminals
outside then connect supply on it. There are three chemical used in LT and HT Bushings to
protect against water.
Resin
Telecom powder
Hardener
Powder coating is doing on top lid to protect against water, resting and atmospheric
conditions.
15 | P a g e
11 Transformer Testing
If reading of current is high on this test then clearance is not good and fault current flow between
the tank body and core.
16 | P a g e
11.3 Iron losses (No Load Test)
In no load Test we apply 440v on LT side and keep HT side open. Then we measure the
no load current.

20 Conclusion
There are different wing of Electrical and Electronics. Production, Research, Development,
Procurement and Calibration departments are interconnected with each other and that too very
perfectly. Here man and Electricity work as if they are a family.
The training at ELMETEC Private Limited was very helpful. It has improved my
theoretical concepts of Reclamation and Power Transformer. So the training was more than hope
to me and helped me to understand the function of a manufacturing unit.
The company was performing its jobs very well in a much prescribed way but still certain
improvements and developments are required at certain levels. This organization has vertical
management system. The TLM (Top Level Management) has ample potential to make this
company as an excellent company and yet they are trying their best as well. The MLM (Middle
Level Management) and BLM (Bottom Level Management) is also very hard working, committed,
punctual and extremely technically genius.
