CVNG 3003 STRUCTURAL DESIGN II 2019/2020

COURSEWORK ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
This coursework carries 30 percent of the final mark, and must be submitted by 4:00pm on 10 October 2019. This project
must be executed and submitted by each student individually. Though collaboration is allowed, the final report must reflect
the requirement that the report is the result of the individual’s work (i.e. there shall be no duplicate reports in whole or in
part).

A proposed small office building is required to function as the administrative center of a

condominium complex. The structural sketches are shown on the attached sheet. The two-story
structure has plan dimensions of 14.35 m by 10.7 m and is comprised of reinforced concrete
members of sections as shown up to the roof eave level. Each story is 3.1 m high, and the
suspended floor slabs are of prestressed concrete planks of 150 mm equivalent solid thickness.
The roof is gable-shaped with the ridge 1.64 m above the eave level. It is comprised of structural
steel rafters of sections as shown. They support 200 mm Z-purlins, and gauge 24 galvanized-iron
sheets (not shown).

The unfactored loads on the structure are (excluding self-weight):

1. Roof superimposed dead load = 0.5 kN/m2

2. Floor slab superimposed dead load = 1.9 kN/m2
3. Floor slab live load = 2.5 kN/m2
4. Total horizontal earthquake load = 175 kN at Level1, and 110 kN at Level2.

Note: The earthquake load is applied to each plan direction as a separate load case, and applied as point loads at the
joints on the outer face of the building.

You are required to appropriately model and analyze the structure in STAAD, making any
assumptions deemed necessary, and using load combinations of 1.2D + 1.6L, 1.28D + 0.5L +
1.3E, and 0.9D + 1.3E, where D, L and E are the dead, live and earthquake load effects
respectively. You are also required to provide the following information:

(1) The maximum positive and negative bending moments in:

(a) The beams at Level1, and the corresponding load combinations. [20 marks]
(b) The roof steel members and the corresponding load combinations. [10 marks]
(2) The maximum positive and negative bending moments in the ground floor columns, and
the corresponding load combinations. [25 marks]
(3) By considering all the internal columns, the column with the maximum axial force, the
value of that force, and the corresponding load combination. [10 marks]
(4) By considering all the side columns, determine the column with the maximum axial
force, the column with the minimum axial force, the values of those forces, and the
corresponding load combinations. [20 marks]
(5) The bending moments corresponding to the axial forces in the columns of question (4).
[15 marks]

Report Format:
The report shall be a printed hardcopy MS-WORD document in Times New Roman 11 font and with the following
sections. Section 1 – Introduction; Section 2 – Structural Model Joints and Members IDs; Section 3 – Calculated Loads
on Members/Joints; Section 4 – STAAD Input File (i.e. .std); Section 5 - STAAD Output file (i.e. .ANL; containing the
information relevant to questions (1) to (5) and hi-lighted), and Section 6 – Conclusions (containing the answers to
questions (1) to (4) in point form). The STAAD input and output files must also be submitted on MyElearning.
