THE EFFECT OF “REALIA” MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING AT

THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 5 KONAWE SELATAN

This study deals with the effect of realia media on students’ speaking at the eighth
grade of SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan in the academic year 2018/2019. The
objectives of this research are to find out whether the use of realia in learning is
effective on students’ speaking at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan
and to measure the significant effect of students’ speaking before and after
teaching by using realia. The population of this study is eighth grade of SMPN 5
Konawe Selatan. The object of this study is two classes at the eighth grade of
SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan chosen by purposive sampling. The first class is VIII A
as the experimental group that taught by realia media and the second class is VIII
B as control group that taught without realia media. This study applies quasi-
experiment research. The instrument of test study is an oral test. In analyzing the
data, the researcher used SPSS 16. The result shows that students’ mean score in
the experimental group is 1.85 at pre-test and 3.85 at post-test, while the mean
score in control group is 1.82 in pre-test and 2.86 in post-test. As the result, the
mean score of post-test in experimental group is higher than in control group.
Then, hypothesis testing uses T-test to find out the difference in learning
outcomes and students’ understanding between the experimental group and
control group, the N-Gain test is performed using the N-Gain formula. From the
calculation of t-test, it shows that the Pvalue is 0,00 lower than 0,05. So, the null
hypothesis is rejected and H1 is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a
significant effect of using realia media on students’ speaking. Thus, it can be said
that realia has a significant effect on students’ speaking at the eighth grade of
SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan.

Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan efek media realia pada kemampuan berbicara
siswa di kelas delapan SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan pada tahun akademik 2018/2019.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan media
realia dalam pembelajaran efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara
siswa di kelas delapan SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan dan untuk mengukur pengaruh
signifikan kemampuan berbicara siswa sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan
menggunakan realia. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMPN 5
Konawe Selatan. Objek pada penelitian ini yaitu dua kelas di kelas delapan SMPN
5 Konawe Selatan yang dipilih secara purposive sampling. Kelas pertama adalah
VIII A sebagai kelompok eksperimen yang diajar oleh media realia dan kelas
kedua adalah VIII B sebagai kelompok kontrol yang diajarkan tanpa media realia.
Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimen semu. Instrumen penelitian tes
adalah tes lisan. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan SPSS 16.
Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata siswa dalam kelompok eksperimen
adalah 1,85 pada pre-test dan 3,85 pada post-test, sedangkan skor rata-rata pada
kelompok kontrol adalah 1,82 pada pre-test dan 2,86 dalam post-test. Hasilnya,
skor rata-rata post-test pada kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada pada
kelompok kontrol. Kemudian, pengujian hipotesis menggunakan uji-T untuk
mengetahui perbedaan hasil belajar dan pemahaman siswa antara kelompok
eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol, tes N-Gain dilakukan dengan menggunakan
rumus N-Gain. Dari perhitungan uji-t, terlihat bahwa nilai Pv 0,00 lebih rendah
dari 0,05. Oleh karena itu, hipotesis nol ditolak dan H1 diterima. Dapat
disimpulkan bahwa terdapat efek yang signifikan penggunaan media realia pada
kemampuan berbicara siswa. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa realia
memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap berbicara siswa di kelas delapan
SMPN 5 Konawe Selatan.
