It is my pleasure and honor to recommend Gillian Fernandez for the William P. Foley Scholarship. I have
known Gillian for three years and was delighted to serve as her academic advisor at the University of
Arizona. After reading through the criteria of the William P. Foley Scholarship, I strongly believe that
Gillian is very deserving of it.

As Gillian’s academic advisor, I witnessed her extraordinary perseverance and intelligence first hand.
Her Pre-Nursing course work GPA was particularly impressive. On a personal level, Gillian is a young
woman of strong character who fully embodies all the traits you look for in potential candidates.
Specifically, I was struck by her tenacity during the application process to the highly competitive nursing
program (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) at the University of Arizona. Due to health issues in her
freshman year, Gillian struggled academically yet I encouraged her to apply when she was first eligible as
I felt it would be beneficial for her to go through the process. More importantly, I knew she would not
be discouraged. While she was unsuccessful during her first attempt, her health issues had been happily
resolved and she spent the following semester retaking pre-requisites. As a result, she was succeeding
academically and was in a position to apply again. And, of course, she was accepted. Throughout my
years of advising, I have never seen a student with such remarkable optimism, intelligence, and drive
that Gillian possesses.

As a nursing student, she embodies all the traits and qualities one would expect to see. She is
compassionate, caring, motivated, and articulate. Furthermore, she is highly regarded amongst peers,
faculty, and staff.

I am confident that the committee will be just as impressed with Gillian as I am, and I urge you to
