DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms and concepts were used in this report and were defined as
follows:
2 methods:
a) By applying observed specific rates to some standard population
ATTACK RATE (AR) - A more accurate measure of the risk of exposure. Useful in
epidemiological investigations
ATTENDED - refers to the cases given medical care at any point in time during the course of
the illness which directly caused death. Medical care may either be provided directly by a
medical doctor or indirectly by allied health care providers, i.e., nurses and midwives who are
under the direct supervision of a medical doctor. Otherwise, case is categorized as “death
unattended” .
BIRTH ORDER – is the numerical order of a child in relation to all previous pregnancies of the
mother.
BIRTH WEIGHT - is the first weight of the fetus or newborn obtained after birth.
CRUDE BIRTH RATE (CBR) - is a measure of one characteristic of the natural growth or
increase of a population.
CRUDE DEATH RATE (CDR) – is measure of one mortality from all causes which may result
in a decrease of population.
CRUDE or GENERAL RATES - These rates are referred to the total living population. It must
be presumed that the total population was exposed to the risk of the occurrence of the event.
DEATH – is the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has
taken place (postnatal cessation of vital functions without capability of resuscitation).
FETAL DEATH – is the death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction of a product of
conception from its mother, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy; the death is indicated by
the fact that after such separation the fetus does not breathe or show any other evidence of life,
such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary
muscles.
ix
FETAL DEATH RATE (FDR) - Measures pregnancy wastage. Death of the product of
conception prior to its complete expulsion, irrespective of duration of pregnancy.
INCIDENCE RATE (IR) - Measures the frequency of occurrence of the phenomenon during a
given period of time. Deals only with new cases.
INFANT MORTALITY RATE (IMR) - Measures the risk of dying during the 1st year of life. It
is a good index of the general health condition of a community since it reflects the changes in the
environmental and medical conditions of a community.
LATE FETAL DEATH – is the death of fetus with 28 or more completed weeks of gestation.
LIVE BIRTH – is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of
conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or
shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or
definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the
placenta is attached; each product of such birth is considered liveborn.
MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE (MMR) - It measures the risk of dying from causes related
to pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. It is an index of the obstetrical care needed and
received by the women in a community.
NEONATAL DEATH – is the death among live births during the first 28 completed days of life.
NEONATAL DEATH RATE (NDR) - Measures the risk of dying during the 1st month of life.
May serve as index of the effects of prenatal care and obstetrical management on the newborn.
PLACE OF OCCURRENCE - refers to the place where the vital event took place.
PREVALENCE RATE (PR) - Measures the proportion of the population which exhibits a
particular disease at a particular time. This can only be determined following a survey of the
population concerned. Deals with total (old and new) number of cases.
RATE - In Vital Statistics, a rate shows the relationship between a vital event and those persons
exposed to the occurrence of said event, within a given area and during a specified unit of time.
It is evident that the persons experiencing the event (the numerator) must come from the total
population exposed to the risk of same event (the denominator).
x
RATIO - It is used to describe the relationship between two (2) numerical quantities or measures
of events without taking particular considerations to the time or place. These quantities need not
necessarily represent the same entities, although the unit of measure must be the same for both
numerator and denominator of the ratio.
SPECIFIC DEATH RATE - Describes more accurately the risk of exposure of certain classes
or groups to particular diseases. To understand the forces of mortality, the rates should be made
specific provided the data are available for both the population and the event in their
specifications. Specific rates render more comparable results and thus, reveal the problems of
public health.
SPECIFIC RATE - The relationship is for a specific population class or group. It limits the
occurrence of the event to that portion of the population definitely exposed to it.
TOTAL FERTILITY RATE (TFR) – refers to the number of children a woman would have by
the time she reaches age 50 under a given fixed fertility schedule. It is sometimes referred to as
completed family size. It is the average number of births per 100 females aged 15-49 years.
USUAL RESIDENCE – refers to the place where the person/deceased habitually or permanently
resides.

INTRODUCTION
The Philippine Health Statistics (PHS) series is the Department of Health’s (DOH)
annual publication that compiles statistics on vital health events. It provides comprehensive
summary of the country’s current statistics on Natality, Morbidity and Mortality.
The PHS is a product of the collaborative and coordinated efforts of the Philippine
Statistics Authority (PSA), this Department and our partners from the local health units. The
statistical data on births, deaths and population estimates were provided by the PSA and data
on notifiable diseases were collected through the DOH’s Field Health Service Information
System (FHSIS). The data from these two sources were summarized, analyzed, interpreted
and presented in tables and graphs for a more meaningful and useful information.
The PHS is intended to serve as one of the bases of health administrators at various
levels of health sectors for planning, implementation and assessment of health programs and
services. These data can also be utilized to assess costs of health care, develop and improve
health interventions, or identify targets for health programs. These are also important tools
not only for planning but also for monitoring and evaluation of health programs. Likewise,
statistical data in this publication can also be beneficial to the researchers, academicians and
local government executives.
A. SOURCES OF DATA
1
copy of each document is sent to the Office of the Civil Registrar General of
the PSA for processing and archiving.
On July 27, 2001, a DOH Department Circular No. 176, series of 2001
was issued for a revised list of Notifiable or Reportable Diseases which now
includes the ICD-10 code of each case except for Acute Watery Diarrhea and
Acute Bloody Diarrhea.

morbid events leading directly to death; or the circumstances of the accident or
violence which produced the fatal injury. The selected cause of death does not
include symptoms and modes of dying, such as heart failure or respiratory
failure.
4. Sex
Some of the factors limiting the use of statistical data emanate from
discrepancies in the original records or from the impracticability of tabulating
these data in very detailed items. While these defects do exist, nevertheless,
the value of these data for original purposes is indispensable. The exact
evaluation of health statistics or the analysis of small differences necessitates
careful study of a variety of related elements. However, the major trends and
differences may not be altered materially by finer analysis.
1. Small Frequencies

subject to errors in the registration process or reporting system. When data
is used for analytical purposes, as for example, the comparison of rate over
a time period or for different areas, the number of events that actually
occurred may be considered as one of a large series of possible results that
could have rise under the same circumstances. In accordance with certain
statistical assumptions, the probable range of values may be estimated
from the actual figures.

NATALITY STATISTICS
Birth statistics presented in this report were obtained from the Certificates of Live
Birth (Municipal Form 102) transmitted by the City/Municipal Civil Registrars to the
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). Statistics presented include only those births which
occurred in 2014 and were registered from January 2014 to March 2015. Births that were
registered after March 2015 and those that were not registered at all were not included in
the report.
There were 1,748,857 live births registered in 2014 with corresponding Crude
Birth Rate (CBR) of 17.5 live births per 1000 population. This is 0.3% decrease in last
year’s CBR, with a decrease of 12,745 livebirths in number. More than three babies are
born alive per minute, which corresponds to a daily average of 4,791 live births. (Table 4)
The Central Visayas Region was highest in CBR in 2014 with 20.9 live births per
thousand population. Second in rank was Bicol Region with a CBR of 20.1. It was
followed by National Capital Region (NCR) (18.8) and Cordillera Administrative
Region (CAR) (18.6). The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was still
at the bottom with CBR of only 4.3. There were ten (10) regions out of 17 with CBR
higher than the national rate of 18.6. (Table 5)
The month with the highest number of babies born alive was in October of 2014.
There were 164,231 live births which comprised a 9.4% of total live births. The daily
average of babies born alive during this month was about 5,298. The lowest birth
occurrence was still in February with 120,162 live births which was 6.9% of the total live
births and an average of daily live births at 4,292. (Table 6)
The country’s fertility rate in 2014 was computed at 6.7. This was translated as to
at least six (6) babies born alive per 100 female of reproductive age 15-49 years. Regions
of Bicol (8.7) and Central Visayas (8.1) had highest fertility rates. There were six more
regions which had higher fertility rates as compared to the national fertility rate. While,
ARMM had the lowest with 1.7. (Table 7)
More male babies were born alive in 2014 (912,465 or 52%) than female babies
(836,392 or 48%) for a sex ratio of 109 males per 100 females. This ratio means that for
every 109 alive baby boys born, there correspond 100 alive baby girls born in 2014. For
over a decade now, statistics show that for all live births, the number of male babies
25
always exceeds the number of female babies. Consistently, the estimated population
revealed that Philippines was a male dominating country in terms of number.
Among the 17 regions, Zamboanga Peninsula had the highest sex ratio of 111
males per 100 females, while, NCR and CALABARZON were the lowest with 108 males
per 100 females. (Table 8)
More than half (53.1%) of live births were attended by a medical doctor. About
three (3) in every ten (10) babies or 32.3% of the total live births were attended by a
midwife. In 2014, medically attended births (87.4%) is 2.3 percentage points higher than
in 2013 (85.1%). Nine (9) out of 17 regions in the country, have more than 50% of births
attended by a physician. The highest of which is CAR (78.1%); followed by the Ilocos
Region (69.8%) and NCR (65.7%).
However, there is still more than one out of ten births attended by traditional birth
attendants or unlicensed midwives. Overall, more than one-tenth (11.8% or 205,571) of
total live births were attended by them. Across regions, ARMM (44.7%) and
MIMAROPA (23.1%) were reported to consistently have the highest proportion of live
births attended by hilot or unlicensed midwives. (Tables 9 and 10)
About 209,872 or 12.0% of live births were born to mothers under 20 years old.
This was translated to more than one birth in every ten births were born by teenage
mothers.
Almost three out of ten (28.96%) live born were from mothers belonging to age-
group 20-24 years and had the most number of live births with 506,451 babies. It is
closely followed by mothers of age-group 25-29 years with 436,091 live births or
24.94%. While, only 392 or 0.02% live births were born to mothers beyond reproductive
age (50 years and over). (Table 11)
Across all regions, CALABARZON had the highest share on the number of live
births born by women of age-group 20-24. Out of the total babies born by mothers of said
age group (506,451), CALABARZON had 71,190 live births, followed by NCR with
65,306 live births. The two regions interchanged ranks for number of live births born by
younger mothers, age under 15 years. Out of 1,877 babies, NCR had 339 and
CALABARZON had 289 live births. (Table 13)

MORBIDITY AND NOTIFIABLE DISEASES STATISTICS
The source of the Morbidity data presented in this report is the 2014 Field Health
Service Information System (FHSIS) Annual Report. The FHSIS data were based on the
weekly notifiable disease reports from Barangay Health Stations (BHSs) and Rural
Health Units (RHUs). These were consolidated at the provincial/city and regional levels
and then submitted to the Epidemiology Bureau (EB) for the national morbidity report.
The Morbidity statistics is then published as one of the components of the FHSIS Annual
Report.
The PHS presents summary tables of morbidity statistics. Morbidity rates for each
morbid condition were computed per 100,000 of the national and regional population.
The population used was from the DOH Department Memorandum No. 2014-0008.
The 2014 PHS presented the ten (10) leading causes of morbidity. The top five
diseases reported were Acute Respiratory Infection with a total of 1,445,320 cases or a
rate of 1,447.1 per 100,000 population. This is a 33.5% and 34.8% decrease in number
and rate respectively, from the 2013 rate of 2,218.9 per 100,000 population with
2,174,740 cases. It was followed by Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (ALRTI)
and Pneumonia (488,415; 489.0), Hypertension (475,693; 476.3), Urinary Tract Infection
(213,666; 213.9) and Bronchitis (204,086; 204.3). The same top three diseases were
recorded last year, however, the number of cases were much lower this year as compared
to 2013.
Table 15 shows the ten leading causes of morbidity for male and female. The
same morbid conditions are identified for both sexes, which only differ in rates and
consequently a slight difference in ranks. Infectious conditions are most common to both
sexes.
Table 18 and Figure 13 show disease trends as to the number of cases and deaths
from 1994 to 2014. Measles showed an increase both in number of cases and number of
deaths, as compared to 2013. The diseases reported as the leading causes of morbidity in

MORTALITY STATISTICS
Presented in this report were data on registered deaths that occurred in 2014 and
were registered from January 2014 to March 2015. Deaths that were registered after
March 2015 and those that were not registered at all were not included. The numbers
were provided by the Vital Statistics Division of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
through information obtained from Death Certificates (Municipal Form No. 103)
transmitted by the City/Municipal Civil Registrars to the Office of the Civil Registrar
General for processing and archiving. No adjustments for under registration or for delay
in the submission of these certificates were made in the analysis.
In addition to these indicators, special tables which feature the ten leading causes
of death among lower age groups; 1-4, 5-9 and 10-14. These were intended for
stakeholders who may consider population of age 1-14 as age of children. This report
also included tables for fetal deaths.
74
GENERAL MORTALITY
In the Philippines, more than five people die for every one thousand population in
2014. This is equivalent to 536,999 registered deaths from all causes and all ages. Of
these deaths, 57 percent or 307,861 were males and 43 percent or 229,138 were females.
For every 100 female deaths, there correspond 134 male deaths and which constituted to
a death sex ratio of 1.34.
The Crude Death Rate (CDR) per thousand population was computed at 5.4
deaths. There was no increase in last year’s CDR. The two-decade trend of CDR from
1994 to 2014 is slowly increasing, although the increase is small, from 4 deaths to 5
deaths per thousand population. (Table 4)
It is consistent that number of male deaths are greater than female deaths.
Consequently, males always have higher death rate than females. In 2014, CDR for male
is 6.1 versus CDR for female, which is 4.6. Reports also showed that the highest
occurrences of deaths were among the elderly persons, 70 years and over. It comprised
more than 38 percent of total deaths with 207,429 deaths. However, death occurrence was
least among age group 10-14 years with 0.8 percent. Mortality among under 1 year old is
more than twice (21,108 or 3.9%) the number of deaths in ages 1-4 years (9,150 or 1.7%)
The number of deaths increase as the people gets older, as shown in Table 19. Statistics
show that the risk of dying is directly proportional to age, starting at 10 years old.
Reports showed that the highest incidence of death (by place of occurrence) was
in CALABARZON with 78,326 or 14.6 percent of the total deaths, followed by NCR
with 72,235 deaths or 13.5 percent and Central Luzon with 62,297 deaths or 11.6 percent.
Deaths from these three regions comprised to almost 40 percent (39.7%) of the total
deaths.
On the other hand, Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) reported
the least number of deaths with 1,653 or 0.3 percent only. While, Cordillera
Administrative Region (CAR) and CARAGA followed with a share of 1.4 percent and
2.5 percent respectively. These three regions were consistently low in terms of the
number of deaths registered, which maybe a result of either effective health intervention
or under registration.
On the other hand, Ilocos Region reported the highest CDR with 6.8 deaths per
thousand of regional population. It is followed by Western Visayas with CDR of 6.6
deaths per thousand of the regional population. Whereas, ARMM posted the lowest CDR
with only 0.5 deaths per thousand of regional population.
Eight (8) out of seventeen (17) regions in the country had exceeded the national
CDR of 5.4; and the rest of the nine (9) regions fell below the national CDR. (Table 20)
Across all regions and in all age groups, except for 70 years and over, numbers of
male deaths were generally higher than female deaths. A difference of 19.8 between
CDRs of male and female could be attributable to difference of 7 years in life expectancy
75
of male and female which were 65 years and 72 years respectively. Based on the World
Health Organization (WHO) data published in 2014, female tends to live 7 years longer
than male, thus, more female dies at a later age.
The month of January recorded the highest number of deaths with 50,581 or 9.4
percent share from the total national deaths. While, the month of December recorded the
least percent share of only 6.1 or 32,913 deaths.
On the average, around 1,471 deaths occurred daily or about 61 people die every
hour in 2014. However, only the months of June, November and December did not
exceed the average number of daily occurrences of deaths.
Diseases of the Heart had been consistently the number one cause of death for
several years now. The 2014 number of deaths from this condition is 14,085 deaths
(11.8%) higher than what was reported in 2013 which had 118,740 deaths. Males are
more likely to die from this cause than females. Out of 132,825 deaths reported, 74,594
or 56 percent were males and 58,231 or 44 percent were females. Thus, the death sex
ratio for Diseases of the Heart was 1.28 or 128 male deaths in every 100 female deaths.
(Table 22)
Deaths from Diseases of the Heart came in many forms such as Acute and
Chronic Rheumatic Heart Disease, Hypertension with heart involvement, Angina
Pectoris, Acute Myocardial Infarction and others. Specifically, Acute Myocardial
Infarction was responsible for 44,503 or 33.5 percent of deaths from Diseases of the
Heart. About three out of five of the Acute Myocardial Infarction deaths were males
(27,685; 62.2%) while, two in five deaths were females (16,818; 37.7%). Deaths from
hypertensive heart diseases (21,534:16.2%) and Chronic ischemic heart diseases (15,624;
11.7%) were the next two types of heart conditions that largely comprised deaths from
Diseases of the Heart.
Most fatalities from Diseases of the Heart were elderly, belonging to 70 and over
70 years old with 61,558 deaths or 46.3 percent. The 2014 mortality statistics showed
that deaths due to heart diseases were higher for men than women for age groups less
than 70 years old. However, more women than men age 70 and older die from the said
condition. (Table 28)
76
The next four diseases in the list which remained in their respective rankings for
the past five years already were, Diseases of the Vascular System (54,934; 10.2%),
Malignant Neoplasm (54,277; 10.1%), Pneumonia (52,460; 9.8%) and Accidents
(35,447; 6.6%).
Eight out of the ten leading causes of deaths were male dominated. Female deaths
were only higher than male deaths in Malignant Neoplasms and Diabetes Mellitus deaths.
Furthermore, there was a significant difference in number of fatalities from Accidents
between male and female. From the total 35,447 deaths from Accidents, 81.4 percent or
28,860 deaths were male and only 18.6 percent or 6,587 were female. This means that
men were almost four times more likely to die from Accidents than women. (Table 22)
Nonetheless, the same killer diseases were identified as the ten leading causes of
death for separate groups of male and female, which differed only in ranks when
tabulated by sex. (Tables 24 and 25).
In 2014, majority of deaths from the ten leading causes of mortality were
unattended by a medical doctor or any allied health officer in anytime during their illness
or injury. Reports show that people who died from pulmonary diseases such as
Pneumonia (66.8%) and Chronic lower respiratory diseases (68.0%) were commonly not
seen by a health practitioner anytime during their illness or injury (Table 26).
Across all regions, only NCR had at least 50% of its deaths were attended by a
medical doctor at the time of death than not. For the past decade , statistics show that
even in NCR, a highly urbanized region and where both public and private health
facilities are accessible, the percentage of attended death is still quite low, the highest is
just 58.5%, which was recorded in 2005. Dying without the attention of a medical doctor
could be somehow an evidence of unaffordable health cost in the country. (Table 27)
Table 31 showed that the 2014 death rates from Communicable Diseases
decreased as compared to last year’s rates. However, rate of the Diseases of the heart is
continuously increasing since 1988. (Table 31)
The ten leading causes of mortality in a ten-year-period interval; 2014, 2004 and
1994 were shown in Table 32. For the past two decades, Filipinos died of mostly the
same kind of diseases, Diseases of the Heart, Diseases of the Vascular System and
Malignant Neoplasm. It can be noted from the three tables that the rate of dying from
those same conditions were increasing through the years.
77
INFANT MORTALITY
The registered infant deaths slightly decreased from 12.5 infant deaths per 1000
live births in 2013 to 12.1 infant deaths per 1000 live births in 2014. The decrease was
3.2 percent. The 21,108 infant deaths comprised 3.9 percent of the total deaths (536,999)
reported during the year. This represented a daily average of 58 infant deaths and was
equivalent to an Infant Mortality Ratio (IMR) of 12.1 deaths per thousand live births.
Statistics showed a decreasing trend in IMR from 1964 to 2014 although there were
minimal increases at some point. (Table 4)
The National Capital Region (NCR) posted the highest IMR with 17.6 deaths per
thousand live births or 4,221 deaths. The regions of CALABARZON and Ilocos followed
with IMR of 14.5 and 13.5 respectively. In contrary, ARMM recorded the lowest IMR of
6.2 with 91 infant deaths. Majority of the 17 regions (12 regions) fall below the national
IMR of 12.1 deaths per thousand live births. (Table 5)
October recorded the highest number of infant deaths in 2014 with a share of 9.7
percent with 2,049 infant deaths. This was translated to about 66 infant deaths per day.
While, the month of December had the least number of infant deaths with 1,146 deaths or
5.4 percent of total infant deaths and an average of 37 deaths per day of that month.
(Table 6)
From the total infant deaths of 21,108, more deaths occurred to infants less than
28 days old with 54.2 percent or 11,434 deaths than to infants one month to less than one
year old with 45.8 percent or 9,674 deaths. (Table 33)
The top three leading causes of infant mortality were Pneumonia (2,809; 13.3%);
Bacterial sepsis of newborn (2,451; 11.6%); and Respiratory distress of newborn (2,156;
10.2%). The listed top six leading causes of infant mortality in 2014 were the same with
what was recorded in 2013. The rates and percentage shares from total infant deaths were
just a little lower in 2014 when compared with the 2013. (Table 34)
Numbers of infant deaths were generally higher among male babies across all
regions with 12,234 deaths or 57.9 percent than female babies with only 8,874 deaths or
42.1 percent with respect to total infant deaths. The infant death sex ratio was computed
at 137 males per 100 female babies. (Table 35)
78
MATERNAL MORTALITY
Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childhood and
postpartum period. While motherhood is often a positive and fulfilling experience, for too
many women it is associated with suffering, ill-health and even death. (WHO) On the
other hand, maternal mortality is a mirror of a woman’s health and nutritional status
during pregnancy, at childbirth, or in the period after childbirth. It also highlights her
access to professional medical services before, during and even after childbirth.
Statistics for this vital event are based on information obtained from the Death
Certificates (Municipal Form No. 103) transmitted by the City/Municipal Civil Registrars
to the National Statistics Office for processing and archiving. Included in this report are
registered maternal deaths that occurred in 2014. No adjustments for under registration
were done in the presentation.
In 2014, the number of registered maternal deaths reached a total of 1,570. The
Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is 0.9 per thousand live birth. (Table 4)
The Davao Region recorded the highest MMR of 1.3 maternal deaths per
thousand live births. While CAR recorded the lowest with 0.4 deaths per thousand
livebirths. Six (6) out of 17 regions had MMR higher than the national ratio of 0.9. (Table
5)
Statistics showed that 85 percent of maternal deaths were direct obstetric deaths.
Second major cause was abortion (10.6%) and others were because of the indirect
obstetric causes (3.8%). (Table 36)
Statistics also showed that MMR was highest in women age 45 to 49 years, with
ratio of 3.2 maternal deaths per 1000 live births. It can be noticed, that, the risk of dying
gets higher as the age of mother gets older. (Table 37)
79
FETAL DEATHS
The information presented herein was obtained from the fetal death certificates
(Municipal Form No. 103A) submitted by the City/Municipal Registrars from all over the
country to the Office of the Civil Registrar General for processing and archiving
purposes. There was no adjustment for under registration in the presentation.
The total numbers of registered fetal deaths were 7,664 which was equivalent to a
fetal death ratio (FDR) of 4.4 per one thousand livebirth. There was an increase in
number of about 2.5 percent from previous year’s fetal deaths. This was translated to an
average of 21 fetal deaths per day for the year 2014. (Table 4)
The FDR was highest in NCR with 6.9 fetal deaths per thousand live births. The
Central Visayas Region followed in second rank with FDR of 6.2 fetal deaths per
thousand live births. Two (2) more regions recorded a higher FDR than the national FDR
of 4.4 fetal deaths per thousand live births. These were Ilocos (5.2) and Calabarzon (5.1).
(Table 5)
Highest incidence of fetal deaths in 2014 was in September with 766 fetal deaths
or 10.0 percent. The months of October and November followed with a percentage share
of 9.7% with 743 fetal deaths and 9.2 % with 707 fetal deaths respectively. (Table 6)
Most deaths of fetal deaths were caused by disorders related to short gestation and
low birth weight (2,075 deaths) and it comprised more than one-fourth of the total
number of fetal deaths or 27.0 percent. However, 20.9 percent or 1,607 fetal deaths still
died from an unspecified cause. The reason may be for the unspecified cause of death
was because of incomplete documentation (Table 39).
Most number of fetal deaths occurred to mothers in age-group 25-29 years, with
1,689 reported deaths or 22.0 percent of total fetal deaths. High number deaths of fetal
deaths were also registered to mothers of ages 20-24 years (1,649; 21.5%) and 30-34
years (1,627; 21.2%). However, statistics show that older mother (40-49 years old) had
higher risk of having fetal deaths than the younger ones. The ratio of fetal deaths to
livebirths was high on mothers belonging to age groups 40-44 (8.9) and 45-49 years
(7.7). (Table 40)
80
MORTALITY AMONG LOWER AGE GROUPS
The 2014 ten leading causes of mortality among lower age groups, specifically to
age groups 1-4; 5-9; 10-14 years were presented in Table 41.
Pneumonia was the number one cause of death among children of age 1-9 years
and third in children ages 10-14 years. It is important to note also, that statistics showed
that deaths due to accidental drowning and submersion were still common cause of
deaths of children from these age groups. (Table 41)
The number of deaths from immunizable diseases, among 0-14 years old were
still notable in 2014. The highest number of deaths was due to all forms of Tuberculosis,
which did not only include Respiratory TB but also TB of the Meninges, with 472 deaths
and followed by Measles with 453 deaths. Deaths due to Measles was high in children in
age groups less than one year old (237; 11.4) and to age group 1-4 years old (196; 2.3).
