TITLE: “ We are Filipinos, and we hate China”: A Description of the Social

Attitude of Filipinos towards Chinese Nationals”

The People's Republic of China and the Republic of the Philippines have maintained
their relationship and achieved developments and achievements in terms of bilateral
cooperation over the course of the 34 years. But more problems have occurred in the
Philippines recently, and China has something to do with it. The connection between the
Philippines and China has endured because of the worsening conflict over the South
China Sea. And this causes a issue between the Philippine people and the Chinese
people

Filipino relations have never been smooth with their Chinese immigrant minority. Since
the sixteenth century, when Spain colonized the Philippines and started record keeping
as well as influencing Filipino and Chinese relations. Disturbingly, this unsettled
situation of the Chinese evokes little empathy from the Filipinos who seen to think that
heir handicaps are properly compensated for by Chinese economic power in the nation.
Instead, for many of the country’s ill, the Chinese serve as scapegoats.

Under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines opened its arms
to China. This alarmed the Filipinos who are afraid this approach will affect the
sovereignty of the country. A youthful protester outside the Chinese Embassy in Manila
claims, "We are Philippines and we hate China," based on the headlines. This can only
imply that it also changes the way Filipinos thinks about Chinese citizens after
understanding what China has done to the Philippines.

There are many facets between the Chinese and the Filipinos to the “animosity
dynamics”. In Filipino anti-sinicism, there is both class-hatred and city-hatred. Most
Filipinos are rural and poor, while most Chinese are urban and middle-class. In Filipino
attitudes, there is even an element of “group self-hatred”. In other words, the Chinese
are rejected for representing the oriental elements in Philippine culture and Physics that
must be eliminated in order to “westernize” more fully.

This thesis reports the analysis of a thorough study whether the residents of the
Legislative Districts of Quezon City are in favor of Filipino-Chinese ties or not. By asking
locals around districts in Quezon City about their concerns to the recent issues between
Philippines-China and how it affects their impressions about Chinese nationals.
