JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION : Departmental Head


DESIGNATION : D.G.M. ( E.H.S.)
REPORTING TO : Head – (OPR)

1. To ensure that progressive and up to date policy on Occupational Health, Environment & Safely, is
at place and implemented forthwith across the organization with due awareness to employees.

2. To ensure there is a strict compliance to company’s Occupational Health, Environment & Safely
Policy and they simultaneously conform to statutory requirements and ISO 14001, OSHA 18000
certifications.

3. To suggest measures and keep control on safety norms and report non-compliances to Head-.
Operations and Director (Technical) parallel.

4. To ensure that the Occupational Injuries / Illness are investigated, appropriate corrective measures
are taken promptly, and report is sent to Head - Operations and Director (Technical).

5. To make sure that safety training programs, for all employees, at all levels, are organized
systematically to improve EHS awareness among them to help bridge the gaps.

6. To ensure that each department staff gets training on Safety and Environment protection in
coordination with HR Department to fulfill the company’s requirement on training.

7. To make sure that instructive and demonstrative sessions are conducted on fire- fighting training
and safety measures to be taken during fire-fighting operations, followed by periodic mock drills
across both plants in order to test equipment and awareness of employees.

8. To carry out safety, health and environment audits once in 6 months time, review compliances to
safety matters identified in internal safety audits and report to Head -.Operations and Director
(Technical) simultaneously.

9. To review EHS information report generated from Process Engineering department on the waste
characteristics, process risks, electrostatic hazards likely to be encountered for implementing new
technologies and products, and suggest plant control for its safe handling.

10. To approve initiation of technology transfer in plant, after reviewing its documentation.

11. To approve start up of the plant after the project department handover.

12. To approve layout and P&I drawings prior to start of the project and suggest modifications, with
respect to EHS perspectives.

13. To make sure that statutory procedures for new products and expansion are completed before
commercial production, with regard to GPCB and Factory Inspectorate.

14. To make sure that effluent treatment feasibility study at pilot plant is carried out for new waste.

15. To suggest personal protective gears, based on occupational exposure limits of materials to plant
for implementing new technologies and products.

16. To make sure that work permit systems are followed for –

(a) work involving generation of sparks, fire endangered areas.


(b) Entering confined spaces or vessels.
(c) Electrical lock out for working on electric network.
(d) Roof access incase of laying asbestos, temporary ceilings.
(e) Unloading solvent tankers.
(f) Other activities involving particular dangers as specified from time to time.

17. To ensure that “On-Site” emergency plan is perspired and updated.

18. To coordinate with Factory Inspectorate Office to ensure that “of Site
Emergency Plan” is in place

18. Prepare Plant Safety Hand-Book & Lab Safety Manual for Vapi and Bavla location keeping both
plant operations in mind.

19. To make sure that “Public Liability Policy” is taken to protect the interest of the organization to
cover eventuality.

20. To ensure by occasional plant audit and meeting with plant personnel, that all the requisite
equipments for prevention and control of air, water, and hazardous waste are operated efficiently,
and suggest measures for continuous improvement.

21. To make sure that treated wastewater is utilized for plantation purpose, and not discharged outside
the factory premises.

22. To make sure that GPCB consent, and MOEF conditions for air, water, solid and hazardous waste
are complied regularly.

23. To improve the efficiency of ETP performance and strike a balance between biological and thermal
treatment methods for controlling the cost without compromise.

24. To identify the significant environmental impacts arising out of manufacturing, and suggest
measures to control the same.

25. To monitor ground water quality at Bavla location.

26. To be responsive on tasks / assignments given, and be proactive in alerting the concerned people,
in advance, of the likely delay with its reasons.

27. To make sure that appropriate containment methods are implemented for material handling of
odor causing chemicals. The level of effectiveness to be more incase of Bavla location.

28. To keep liaison with GPCB and Factory department along with Administrative department, as and
when needed.

29. To carryout periodic or annual review performance of the group personnel for their merit rating
and participate in the recruitment, selection and to take responsibility to train & develop staff
members of the department including preparation of the Job Descriptions.

30. To ensure that EHS Department get the information on adverse health effect of staff working in the
plant to enable EHS Department to suggest safe plant operating systems in coordination with the
Manufacturing people to control health risks to the staff, as and when needed.

31. To make sure that EHS department staff follow the laid down systems and procedures and
continuously stress on formalizing written procedures to carryout all activities.

32. To carry out Strength/Weaknesses/opportunity/Threat (S.W.O.T.) analysis of your department


and lay down short term and long term objectives for improvements under acknowledgement of
superiors.

33. To make sure that appropriate support is provided from your department in outsourcing
agreements as per business demands.

34. To ensure maintenance of record of Books, Files, Registers, Floppies, etc. depending upon usage.
List of such filing / records shall be prepared in order of convenient identification. To give
instructions to all staff to be highly proficient in maintaining them up to date.

34. As Deputy General Manager – Environment, Health & Safety, carry out such jobs and other
connected or incidental jobs, which are necessary due to exigencies of companies work and
business requirements. Also to carry out such jobs that is within capabilities and / or work in any
other post which may be temporarily assigned.
