publication of IPP Education, one of the most reliable and popular English centres in
Vietnam.

Standing for both an English Magazine and an electronic magazine, the mission
of E-Magazine is enabling readers to learn English in a practical way, turning English
into an essential part of your life. This includes both general and academic English.

E-Magazine does not only offer academic English vocabulary, learning tips and

and traditional paintings of different
genres such as Đông Hồ, Hàng Trống,
Kim Hoàng. Several other rituals,
ceremonies and cultural

Đến với không gian tết Việt tại Hoàng
thành Thăng Long, các bạn có thể tìm hiểu
về Tết xưa qua ảnh tư liệu của Bảo tàng
Albert Kahn (Cộng hòa Pháp), tranh khắc
gỗ của Henri Oger với những hình ảnh Tết
gần gũi; trò chơi dân gian và thú chơi
tranh ngày Tết qua các dòng tranh dân
gian như tranh Đông Hồ, Hàng Trống, Kim
Hoàng. Ngoài ra còn có nhiều hoạt động lễ

One of the most significant festivals we have in Vietnam is the Tet holiday. It
takes place during our Lunar New Year and lasts for approximately 2 weeks before,
during and after the passing of the previous year. Its prominence is due to the fact that
Vietnamese people seriously appreciate the passage of time and the changes that it
brings about, and so we celebrate a new year with a hope for a prosperous future for our
friends and family.

The most exciting thing about Tet for me is quite personal. Every year our family
would make a trip to my mother’s hometown to visit our grandparents, and every visit
we had on each new year remained novel. The rustic charm of the smal l town coupled
with the silence of a New Year is real ly something that stays with you long after you
experienced it. I would wake up early, take my cousin’s bike and ride around the little
town, to discover nooks and cranny’s and al l the wonders that come with them –
usual ly hidden but delicious food joints. This remains one of my favorite things to do
in Tet. I know that col lecting lucky money or hanging out with friends are some
common activities to do on Tet holiday, but they wear off eventual ly as you grow more
mature, and what real ly sticks to you are the little things that the silence of a festival
can bring.

During Tet festival we have an abundance of traditional foods, with the most
famous one being Banh Chung. Banh Chung is made with a special strain of sticky
rice, with green beans and fatty meat as the protein. These ingredients are wrapped
around with either palm or bamboo leaves into a square shape and subsequently
boiled overnight. The result is a sticky and succulent treat which goes perfectly
with some acidic sides like Vietnamese sauerkraut for flavor. This dish can be
accompanied with fried omelets, not real ly common but I like the combination of
egg yol k and sticky texture. Banh Chung is a real ly versatile dish, for example it can
be fried, it can come in vegetarian, and one can even innovate the traditional recipes
by adding ham and soy sauce to the finished product. I ate it al l the time as a kid
when the holiday came, and the habit just stuck with me al l the way up to now.

SAMPLE WRITING
There are many Vietnamese people who claim
that we should merge the Solar New Year
and the Lunar New Year. To what extent do
you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Vietnam is one of a few countries in the world which stil l regard/greet Lunar
New Year as one of the greatest events of the year. While more people now support
the idea that the Solar New Year and the Lunar New Year should be merged together,
in my opinion, people should preserve the tradition of celebrating the two events
separately.

The primary reason for my belief is that if such a merge is implemented, the
balance between professional and personal life of mil lions of Vietnamese people wil l
be affected. In Vietnam, the Lunar New Year has long been considered a time for
family reunions. It is one of the longest national holidays in Vietnam in which al l
work-related activities are brought to a halt for a period of about nine days.

To be specific, many people who have to work

far away from their loved ones al l year round see
the Lunar New Year as a rare opportunity to break
away from work and make up for lost time with
their family and friends. Therefore, merging the
Lunar New Year with the Solar New Year would
potential ly have an adverse effect on the work-life
balance of workers.

SAMPLE WRITING
Another significant reason why these two events should not be organised at the
same time is that they help boost the economy tremendously, and it would be a waste
not having both of them. These ceremonies are the time when the purchasing power
of consumers is the highest in a year. People tend to buy new home decorations and
clothes as wel l as stock up on food before these holidays start, and tourism and travel-
ling businesses may reap huge benefits as many people choose these times of year to
either take a vacation or travel back to their hometown. Combining Lunar New Year
and Solar New Year would not guarantee to be as economical ly lucrative as keeping it
the customary way.

In conclusion, I believe that combining the two New Year holidays into one is
unnecessary, for not only economic reasons but also the fact that the Lunar New Year
has long been proven to be a meaningful holiday for individuals.
