MUED 307

Lesson Plan for French Folk Song: Justin Thornton

Objectives
- Students will play with good posture and correct positioning
- Students will maintain tempo
- Students will demonstrate proper bowing techniques at different dynamics and
styles
- Students will communicate on how they can improve
- Students will demonstrate pizzicato and arco

Procedures
Students will...
- Begin by doing breathing exercises led by the teacher (nice relaxed breaths!)
- Practice D major scale altogether, with feedback from the teacher ( make sure you
all have good posture, just like Andrew does!)
- Practice fingerings of the repertoire while the teacher demonstrates (remind to
pluck with fat finger and lightly)
- Have Willie, Keith, Andrew, and Lauren Play arco while the class plucks (after
have them give a round of applause)
- Students will play the piece with arco at a moderate tempo, which will be set by a
student (have Justus set tempo). This should be played with a beautiful sound,
which will be encouraged by the teacher. Feedback will follow. (Bravo! You all
sound like a professional orchestra!)
- The teacher will ask the students how the piece can be more musical. Perhaps
introduce the French style (light, bright) almost like a dance (Ask Sam is he has
any idea of how to make this piece more interesting, other than by the shape of
the line)
- Students will then play in a new style and reflect on why it was better (if it was)
(ask Peter why it was better, and how). Feedback is given by the teacher.
- At the end, have them play it very fast to replicate the dance.

Assessment
- The teacher will asses students tone quality while listening to the ensemble
- The teacher will asses how well the students are able to change in different styles
of music
