Course Background
Describe the rationale of the course and justify the role and importance o the course to the
program. Answers the basic question: why must the course be offered?

Course Aims
Describe the general and broad intended outcomes of the course. Answers the basic
questions: what should the course lead to in the long term?
Provide 2-3 course aims.

Course Objectives
Describe the specific intended outcomes that should be realized by the end of the
course. Course objectives should reflect and enable realization of the course aims.
They must also insulate course description.
Provide 3-4 course objectives.

Course Description
Provide the broad content that must be covered in order to bring about the stated
course objectives. Note that a detailed course description is already provided for
each course in each program. Either:
i. Lift the description from the course.
ii. But a better approach is to summarize the major themes in the detailed course
description. Remember that several specific content can always be grouped
under a major content.

Learning Outcomes
Describe the expected effects of the course. In other words, how would the students
benefit from taking the course? How would they be different from if they had not
taken the course, or if they took an alternative course?

Methodology
Describe the approach, methods, strategies and techniques that will be used in the
course. For example, Lectures, class discussions, seminar presentation, group
presentations, handouts, OHPs, etc. a methodology should clearly explicate the role
of the teacher and the role of the students.

Evaluation
Describe how the course will be evaluated from course work to end of semester
examination. If a sit in examination is planned, it should be shown in the course
content plan.

Attendance
Describe the responsibility of students in attendance. The university has specific
requirements on students’ attendance of lectures.

Participation
Describe the role of students in class. A class may take different formats depending
on a teaching plan and method. This section should describe what is expected of
students and indicate if they are any rewards attached.

List, in a professional manner, the main texts that you have used to prepare the
course and which the students are expected to consult. Indicate additional reading
texts that students may also consult. It is important to inform the students that they
are free and are encouraged to consult any other relevant texts.

Effective Date
Indicate the date when the teaching is expected to begin. The effective date of a
course outline is the official date announced by the university.
