3. Quick Start User Guide: (through point # 9)
The program Folio Views is used to browse and search Ellen G. White's writings that are
contained in full-text, searchable databases called "infobases." The main infobase is the "Complete
Published Writings". The CD-ROM edition you purchased includes the following: EGW Periodical
Articles, EGW Index, the KJV Bible, EGW Biography, the 1828 Webster's dictionary, as well as
reference and research materials and children's books about Ellen White. To go to an infobase, click
its button on the Main Menu. To return to the Main Menu from any infobase, click the Home (house)
icon on the toolbar.

NOTE: For detailed user instructions click Help Tutorials on the Main Menu.

4. Using Ellen White's Writings:

If the EGW Writings (Folio Views) program is not open, select the EGW Research icon from
the Programs group on the Windows Start Menu. Then click the EGW Writings button at the top left of
the Main Menu. On each side of the menu picture is a row of rectangular buttons for accessing
features of the EGW Writings infobase (on the left) and other infobases (on the right).

The main window is divided into three panes: Contents on the left, Reference at the top right,
and Document on the bottom right. Click one of the tabs below the window to switch from one view to
another. Then click the Contents tab to return to the three-pane view.

The Table of Contents (TOC) on the left displays book titles. To browse the EGW writings,
click the + symbol beside a book title to display chapter subheadings. Double click a subheading to
go to that chapter. Scroll up and down using the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard, or
the scroll wheel of your Microsoft-compatible mouse.

To go to a specific book and page, click Go To: Book/Page on the EGW Writings menu picture.
Enter the book code as shown in the TOC (AH, CG, etc), and the page number. Then click Search.
To return to the menu of the current infobase, press the Ctrl-Home keys. To return to the Main Menu,
click the Home (house) icon on the toolbar.

To copy selected text, drag to highlight, and then choose Copy from the Edit menu. Then you
can paste the text into another program such as a word processing program. The infobases contain
some hidden text. When copying text, turn on "view hidden text" in the word processing program.

"Jump links" are indicated in the infobases by colored, underlined text. Click a link to go to that
location; click the back arrow on the toolbar to return to the starting point. Or click the Home icon on
the toolbar to return to the Main Menu.

5. Searching:
To search an infobase, click the "binocular" icon on the toolbar or choose Full Text Search
from the EGW Writings menu. In the Query For box, type a word, words, or a phrase. Click OK. Folio
Views displays the "hits"—paragraphs containing the search words. To go to the next or previous
"hit," click the forward or backward double arrows on the toolbar. To limit the search to specific books
or chapters, click to place a check in the box next to the title/s in the TOC. The toolbar also contains a
quick-search Query Tool box. You can type a query directly into this box.

Search format (query syntax) examples:

 mercy and love—(Typed in the Query For box) Finds all paragraphs (records) containing both
words.
Comprehensive Research Edition 2008 ReadMe Page 2
 mercy or love—Finds all records containing either "mercy" or "love".

 "truth in Jesus" [phrase in double quotes]—Finds all records containing that phrase.

 "faith works"/10—Finds records with the words "faith" and "works" occurring within 10 words
of each other, in that order. Type "faith works"@10 to find records with those words in any
order.

 creat*—Finds all variations such as create, created, creator, creation, creating, etc.

NOTE: When searching, use less common, more distinctive words or phrases. Searching for words
like "love" or "Jesus" will find thousands of paragraphs.

6. Printing or Exporting All "Records with Hits":

CAUTION: Before printing or exporting the results of a search, "narrow the view" by choosing
Records with Hits from the View menu. Otherwise you may be telling Folio Views to print or export the
entire infobase!

To print or export only selected records, after doing a search, mark (tag) each paragraph you
wish to print or export by clicking in the paragraph and then clicking Tag Records or pressing Ctrl-T.
Choose Tagged Records from the View menu to show only those records. Then Print or Export from
the File menu.

7. Other Features:
Personalizing features that allow you to create topical studies include: "highlighters,"
“bookmarks,” and inserted notes. You can search, print, or export the marked passages and notes.

Among the new search templates are a detailed periodical search (click Go To: Periodical/Date
on the EGW Writings menu) and a template for searching material by authors other than Ellen White
(choose White Estate Comments from the Search menu bar).

The Complete and the Comprehensive editions include Noah Webster's 1828 American
Dictionary. When browsing any infobase, highlight a word and click the "chain link" icon on the tool
bar to jump to the definition of that word in the dictionary. To return to where you were reading, close
the Dictionary by selecting Close from the File menu or clicking the 'x' box at the upper right of the
window.

8. Help and Tutorials:

A copy of this ReadMe file is installed in the EGW Research program group where you can
access it at any time.

A Quick Reference shortcut has been included in the program group as well. It contains a list
of Folio Quick Keys (keyboard shortcuts), syntax for search queries, and an extensive glossary of
terms related to the Folio Views program. The contents of this file is drawn from Folio Views help
files, accessed from the Help droplist menu useful for experienced users.

For customized EGW instructions, click Help Tutorials on the EGW Writings Main Menu. The
lessons further explain the many features of Folio Views, demonstrate basic and advanced searching,
teach how to personalize the infobases using notes and highlighters, and review the use and contents
of the other infobases.

9. New Components:
The Ellen G. White Writings Comprehensive Research Edition is compatible with Windows 98,
2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit versions), and includes many noticeable and "behind
the scenes" enhancements and fixes including sharper menu graphics, indexed and searchable
Comments, and re-indexing of all infobases for ease of use and accuracy. Perhaps the most evident
change is the absence of the Scripture Index Supplement; it has been integrated into the Scripture
Index. Missing and incorrect links have been corrected and the Infobases have been rebuilt using the
latest technology. Another quick and easy method for going to a book and page has been introduced:
Ctrl-G. Enter this key command, then enter the book code and page number and press enter. It will
directly link you to the book/page searched for.

The 2008 Comprehensive Research Edition has two totally new infobases of additional
material. The Words of the Adventist Pioneers Infobase (WAP) represents the largest single
collection of material ever added to the Ellen White CD, In fact there is 2.34 times more material in
this new infobase compared with the EGW Complete Writings infobase. The important Adventist
pioneer authors material from the 19th century has been added, along with all leading Adventist
periodicals of that era. The WAP infobase also includes some important church history material from
recent 20th-century Adventist authors.

The second new infobase included in the Comprehensive Research Edition includes a
selection of historical works Ellen White had in her personal reference library.

Major improvements have been made to the Legacy of Light CD as well: Microsoft Vista and
Windows 7 Compatibility, the Reel to Reel movies have had a vast improvement in quality, the
content of each movie has been greatly expanded, and a new virtual reality tour of Ellen White’s
Elmshaven retirement home has been added.

We trust that these CD upgrades will be a blessing to your research and study.

10. Copyright and Ownership:

With the increasing use of technology in every aspect of our lives, countries and states are
enacting intellectual property laws to protect people who create products such as music and
computer software. We at the Ellen G. White Estate, as workers for God, take these laws very
seriously and strive to maintain the highest ethical standards. The following paragraphs outline your
rights and limitations as a purchaser of this software. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Your single-user license gives you the right to install the software on one (1) computer hard
drive. You may not copy or distribute the software by any method or means. If you own two
computers (such as a desktop and a laptop) you may install the software on both computers only if no
more than one copy is used at any one time. In other words, think of the software as a book: Only one
person at a time can read a book. It is a violation of the single-user license for more than one person
at a time to use the program.

Applicable copyright laws also protect Ellen G. White's writings and all other material on the
CD-ROM installed to your hard drive. Although many older printed books are in the public domain, the
electronically published material (including those older books) is copyrighted on the date of CD
release. If you use a quotation—sentences or paragraphs copied from a book, magazine article, or
any other source on the CD-ROM—you must acknowledge the source by listing the author, the
periodical title and date, or the book and page number. It is also good practice to cite a source
Comprehensive Research Edition 2008 ReadMe Page 4
reference for concepts, even if the statement is not quoted verbatim. Whether quoting directly or
using ideas from these writings, it is important to capture the context and complete thought of the
passage in order to preserve its intended meaning and avoid misunderstanding or misapplication.

FAST and its licensors own the software and all trade secrets, copyrights, patents, and other
intellectual property rights therein, which you agree to preserve. By installing this software, you agree
to the claims and restrictions spelled out in the End User License Agreement. A copy of the EULA.txt
file is available on the CD and installed EGW Research directory.

If you transfer the software, you must transfer all media and written materials, and retain no
copies.

11. Customizing the Infobase (For Advanced Users):

Since the infobases are locked to prevent a user from making accidental changes to the text of
Ellen G. White's writings, shadow files (ending in *.SDW) are used for storing notes, highlighters, and
other personalized additions. However, some Folio Views features—such as Grouping, Layout, and
creating Jump Links—cannot be used on a locked infobase. Upon installation all unavailable basic
menu options in the Insert, Table, Layout, and Tool menus cannot be used due to the locked state of
the infobases.

If you are an experienced user who wishes to access these features, you must replace the
default egwhite.lcf file with a custom LCF file. To do so, locate the Extras folder in the directory where
you installed the EGW Research software, (a copy is also available on your CD). Drag the egwhite.lcf
file to replace the existing file in the C:\Estate\Research 2008\Folio directory located on your hard
drive. Click OK to replace the default egwhite.lcf file with the custom one. (See Chapter 4 of the Help
Tutorials for more information regarding shadow files.)

12. Technical Support:

If you have questions or problems with the software, please reference the relevant sections in
the Help Tutorials and Folio Views Help menu on the toolbar. Please visit our website for upgrades,
bug fixes, and work-around information.

If you need further technical assistance other than is provided in the Readme or Help Tutorials,
