LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS – 10

First Quarter, AY 2018-2019
July 30, 2018

L.C. performs division of polynomials using long division and synthetic division.
I. Objectives
a. identify polynomial expressions and define polynomial expressions;
b. demonstrate division of polynomials through long division; M10AL-Ig-1
c. accurately determine the divisor, dividend, quotient, and remainder in dividing
polynomials using long division; and
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Division of Polynomials by Long Method
Reference: Mathematic Learner’s Material 10
III. Learning Procedure
A. Preliminary
a. Preliminary b. Greetings c. Cleanliness of the classroom
B. Lesson Proper
a. Activity I: Review
1. How do we divide the following?
i. 14 / 3 =
ii. 19/2 =
2. What is the dividend? How about the divisor? What is our quotient? Is there a
remainder?

b. Activity II: Lesson Proper

1. Spot the Difference: Refer on page 57 in Mathematics Learner’s Module.

Look at each pair of expressions below. Identify the expression that is not a
polynomial from each. Give reasons for your answers.

A B
2
1. 2x+1 𝑥
+1
2. x-3+2x2-7 x3+2x2-7
3. 2√𝑥 x√2
4. 2x3-3x1/2+x-4 2x3-3x2+x-4
(𝑥+5)(9𝑥+1)−2
5. (x+5)(9x+1)2(x-4) (𝑥−4)

i. Which among the following expressions are polynomial expressions

and which are not?
ii. When can we say that an expression is a polynomial expression?

2. Dividing Polynomials using Long Division method

i. Present the steps in diving polynomials using long division method and
identify the dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder.
ii. Divide (2x2+5x-23) by (x+5)
iii. Divide (2x4+7x3+10x2+0x+8) by (2x-3)
𝑃(𝑥) 𝑅(𝑥)
iv. Write the final answer in a form 𝐷(𝑥) = 𝑄(𝑥) + 𝐷(𝑥)
or P(x)=Q(x)●D(x)+R(x)

c. Analysis
Divide (4x5+6x4+5x2-x-10) by (2x2+3)

i. What is our dividend? How about our divisor?

ii. What will be our steps in performing division of polynomials using
long method?

Solution:

2x2+3 ) 4x5+6x4+0x3+5x2-x-10

iii. How are we going to write our final answer?

d. Abstraction
1. In diving polynomials using long method, identify first the dividend and
the divisor. Place 0’s in case the P(x) has missing terms.
2. There are three steps in dividing polynomials: a) divide the first term of
the dividend by the first term of the divisor: b) multiply the result from
the divisor then subtract it from the dividend; and c) repeat.
When the solution is done, identify the quotient and the remainder and
𝑃(𝑥) 𝑅(𝑥)
finally write it in the form 𝐷(𝑥) = 𝑄(𝑥) + 𝐷(𝑥)
or (x)=Q(x)●D(x)+R(x).

IV. Evaluation (Divide and Write it in Form)

1. (5x2-17x-15) / (x-4)
2. (2x4+x3-19x2+18x+5) / (x-5)

V. Agreement
Study about dividing polynomials using synthetic division.
