COMPUND SCREW JACK APPARATUS
AIM:-
 To determine the M.A., V.R. and Mechanical Efficiency of a compound
screw jack.

ACCESSORIES REQUIRES:-
 Compound Screw Jack Apparatus
 Slotted Weights
 Rope/Nylon String
 External Accessory: Vernier Caliper/Ruler

LABELLED:

THEORY:-
It is a further improved from of differential screw jack, in which the
velocity ratio is further intensified with the help of a geared screw jack, in
which the screw is lifted with the help of worm and worm wheel, instead of
effort at the end of a lever. Now consider a worm geared screw jack.
In one complete revolution of the effort wheel, the distance moved by the
effort, y = p (D + d)
But since it is a compound screw jack,

Therefore for the load to be lifted through a distance p, the no. of revolutions
required by the effort wheel = No. of teeth on the gear, N.
Therefore for ‘p’ distance moved by the load, the distance moved by the effort
= π (D + d)N
Therefore, Velocity Ratio = π (D + d) N/p
Mechanical Advantage = W/P
Mechanical Efficiency = M.A/V.R.

PROCEDURE:-
1. Place a load W on the flanged table.
2. Find the diameter of thread/rope & wrap around the effort pulley using
vernier caliper.
3. Suspend effort weight to the free ends of the thread/rope coming over
the pulley. This load ‘P’ should be increased gradually suitable to give a
just upward motion to the load W placed on the flanged table.
4. Note down W and P to determine the M.A. i.e. W/P.
5. Take the several readings by changing the value of W and P.

NOMENCLATURE:

 p = Distance travelled by load,

 W = Load lifts
 P = Effort applied to lift the load,
 D = Diameter of the effort pulley
 d = Diameter of the rope
 N = No. of teeth on the worm wheel

OBSERVATION & TABLE:-

1. Diameter of the flanged table = 140 mm = 14.0 cm
2. Diameter of the effort pulley = 150 mm = 15.0 cm
3. Pitch of the screw = 1.50 mm = 0.15 cm
4. Pitch of the worm = 4.0 mm = 0.40 cm
5. No. of teeth in worm wheel = 40

PRECAUTIONS:-

 Weight always lift in upward direction and effort fall downwards

 Find out the diameter of rope/thread before experiment performs.
 Lubricate the worm and gears using high strength oil.
 There should be no overlapping of the strings.
 Always use as bench top apparatus.
 Gently put the weights on effort side without jerk.
