November 4th, 2013 IZMIR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT ME 307 THERMODYNAMICS I MIDTERM I 1. The initial conditions for an air-standard Otto cycle operating with a compression ratio of 8:1 are 0.95 bar and 17°C. At the beginning of the compression stroke, the cylinder volume is 2.2 L and 3.6 ki of heat is added during the constant volume heating process. Calculate; a) the pressute and temperature at the end of each process of the cycle, b) the thermal efficiency (using Wret/Qin), ¢) mean effective pressure of the cycle. 2. The pressute and temperature at the beginning of the compression process of an air-standard Diesel cycle are 95 kPa and 300 K, respectively. At the end of the heat addition process, the pressure is 7.2 MPa and the temperature is 2150 K. Determine; 1a) the compression ratio, b) the cut-off ratio, 6) the thermal efficiency of the cycle (using WneU/Qin) 3. An ideal air-standard Brayton cycle operates with air entering the compressor at 0.95 bar and 22°C. The pressure ratio is 6:1, and the air leaves the combustion chamber at 1100 K. Calculate; a) the compressor work input, b) the turbine work output, ) the thermal efficiency of the cycle (using Wret/Qis). 4) for the compressor and turbine adiabatic efficiencies are 82 and 85%, determine the thermal efficiency of actual cycle.
