OSMOSIS EGGSPERIMENT

(REFLECTION PAPER)

NAME: Dianne M. Baniel STRAND: 11 STEM 2 DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2019

Osmosis Eggsperiment is an activity that really needs a lot of time to observe the eggs
inside the jar and patience in order to have an understanding and to acquire results. It takes our
time by simply observing it. We are instructed to put eggs in the two identical jars with different
concentration (egg with distilled water and salt water) and observe what happens to the eggs and
it became easier for me because I have my partner to look for it and to help me from observing the
two solutions. We assisted each other until from doing the lab report. I expected this activity to
give us hard work upon doing so but it did not. It gave us greater knowledge and understanding
about the difference of the hypotonic and hypertonic solution.
When we put the eggs on both solutions the difference of the water movement in hypotonic
and hypertonic solution was shown as the eggs is swelling and shrinking. Beneath the shell is a
semi-permeable membrane because it allows or it regulates what comes in and out of the egg. The
egg that is placed in distilled water is a cytolysis because it swells while for the egg placed in
concentrated salt solution is a plasmolysis because it shrinks. The egg soaked on water solution
gained more weight because it is attracted to the solute inside the cell while for the egg soaked on
salt solution will result into loss of weight because the solute concentration is greater outside the
cell, therefore water will flow outside the cell. The egg soaked in salt solution smells bad for it is
being soaked for too long and because of the presence of salt.
This experiment gave us the real explanation of osmosis and it enlightened our mind with
the difference of hypotonic and hypertonic solution.
First, get the two similar jars and clean it. After it fill each of the jar with water. Make sure
it’s the same amount in each one. Then take your salt and add 10 spoons to the one jar only. Keep
stirring until it is completely dissolved. Put an egg into the jar of pure water and the other egg into
the saltwater jar. The n observe it time by time, day by day. After 10 days, get the weight of the
two eggs. After it, exchange the eggs into the jars of the water solution and salt solution. Then
after 6 days, get again the weight of the two eggs.

I. CONCLUSION
Based on the observations upon doing the experiment, we therefore conclude that the
Egg A which is the water solution concentrated in hypotonic solution would swell while for the
Egg B which is the salt solution concentrated in hypertonic solution would shrink. The egg soaked
on water solution gained more weight because it is attracted to the solute inside the cell while for
the egg soaked on salt solution will result into loss of weight because the solute concentration is
greater outside the cell, therefore water will flow outside the cell. But in our experiment the egg
soaked in the salt solution is little heavier than the egg soaked in the water solution because of the
size of the eggs.

II. RECOMMENDATION
We therefore recommend to the student next school year that they must observed the egg
Osmosis Experiment with distilled water and salt water every single day. In order to see the
difference specially when the egg is soaked in the solution for too long it will become smelly, so
they must consult and remind their teacher as long as possible for the result to determine what to
do in the next stage for the better performance in the activity.
