Project Title:

Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) Analysis of Engine Fins by Varying Geometry

Abstract:

The Engine cylinder is one of the major automobile components, which is subjected to high
temperature variations and thermal stresses. In order to cool the cylinder, fins are provided on
the cylinder to increase the rate of heat transfer. The main aim of the project is to analyze the
thermal properties by varying geometry with perforated fins, and analyze perforated shapes
fins heat transfer rate and thickness of cylinder fins. The Fins models are created by varying the
geometry shapes like circular, triangular and rectangular and also by varying thickness of the
fins for all geometries. The 3D modeling software DEL CAM and Pro/Engineer is used. Thermal
analysis is done on the cylinder fins to determine variation temperature distribution over time.
The analysis is done using ANSYS 15.0. By doing thermal analysis on the engine cylinder fins, it is
helpful to know the heat dissipation inside the cylinder. The principle implemented in this
project is to increase the heat dissipation rate by using the invisible working fluid, which is air.

Objectives:

 The main objective of this research is to increase the heat transfer efficiency of the
engine fins by modifying the geometrical shape of fins.
 To design Effective and Efficient fins.
 Analysis to compare the natural heat transfer of horizontal solid fins and vertical solid
fins.
 To find the temperature distribution among the engine fins.
 To find the thermal conductivity of different materials for the innovative design of fins.
Methodology:

Results/Conclusion:

Design of fin plays an important role in heat transfer. There is a scope of improvement in heat
transfer of air-cooled engine cylinder fin, if mounted fin’s shape varied from conventional one.
The main objective of this research is to compare the thermal conductivity of different
perforated engine fins with nonperforated engine fins. It also concludes that change in
geometry of perforation can increase and decrease the specific heat, applied heat flow, heat
flux, etc. Also, observed that the rectangular engine fins with square perforation shown better
efficiency due to shape of perforation.
