he prestigious first printed edition of the

The Mantova  Zohar Zohar was printed in Italy (Mantova, ).
This book marked a turning point in the
First reprint facsimile, available in june  history of the Kabbalah. Before this edition, the
mystical tradition was mostly disseminated among
a small elite of initiated Jews. From the middle of
the 16th Century, the Zohar, a seminal text of the
Jewish thought, could circulated and be studied
more widely. Most the following printed editions
were based on the Mantova edition. We find very
few copies in the private collections or in the main
libraries around the world. The princeps edition
will be reprinted as a facsimile which will be the
exact reproduction of the copy kept in the Elie J.
Nahmias’s collection kept in
the library of the Alliance
Israélite Universelle (AIU,
Paris).
Kept in an excellent state of conservation, the volume
includes many handwritten annotations and marginal
notes with the signature by the censor Domenico
Ierosolomitano. This edition is an unique testimony of
the printing art in Italy and an important book to
understand the history of the Jewish culture.

The three volumes (,  and  pages) include the
commentaries on Genesis (Volume ), Exodus (Vol. ),
Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy (vol. ).

The facsimile edition of this remarkable and very rare book in three volumes will be
reprinted in Macerata (Italy) printed on Fabriano Paper, from a paper mill existing
since . The book will be prinetd in the original format ( cm x  cm.) and
edited by the Beith ha-Zohar with the cooperation of the Editions de l’Eclat (Paris).
