2019 DIVISION ENGLISH OLYMPICS


GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA
November 29, 2019

1. SPELLING
a. Open to Grade 7 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. Words to be spelled shall be provided by the Spelling Committee. These 500 words were chosen
from the English 7 Learner’s Material. Each participating school shall be provided a copy of these
words.
c. The Spelling Committee shall prepare all the 500 words for the contest. 50 words shall be drawn to
determine the winners.
d. In case of a tie, 3 clinchers shall be shall be read from the list of words. After these 3 clinchers are
given and still no winner is declared, the Education Program Supervisor in English shall provide
words not on the list to finally break the tie.
e. Each question shall be read twice; contestants are given 10 seconds to answer.
f. Contestants must bring ¼ illustration board cut crosswise, chalk and eraser.
g. Coaches may stay at the back of contestants but at least 3 meters away and should refrain from
talking and/ or coaching. Anyone who will not abide will be requested to leave the contest room.
h. 10 winners shall be declared in this category.
2. ESSAY WRITING
a. Open to Grade 8 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. Contestants are given one hour to write his/her composition.
c. Topic shall be given by the judges on the spot while the title shall be provided by the contestants.
d. Criteria for judging:
 Content/ Relevance to the topic - 40%
 Mechanics - 30%
 Organization of ideas - 30%

e. 10 winners shall be declared in this category.
3. QUIZ BEE
a. Open to Grade 9 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. Reference: A Journey Through Anglo- American Literature
c. Coaches should prepare the following:
 2 questions for the main round with 5 choices (a, b, c, d , e), equivalent to 1 point each.
 1 question as clincher with no choice in case of tie
d. Insignificant questions shall NO longer be included and replaced
e. Folding of entries for the clinchers shall be done by the committee.
f. Question should be encoded on a ¼ of a long coupon bond (portrait) cut horizontally and
encoded in lower case except for proper nouns and acronyms, Times New Roman, size 12.

g. Each question shall be read twice; contestants are given 10 seconds to answer.
h. Coaches may stay at the back of contestants but at least 3 meters away and should refrain from
talking and/ or coaching. Anyone who will not abide will be requested to leave the contest room

4. POEM WRITING
a. Open to Grade 10 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. Contestants are given one hour to write his/her poem.
c. Poem should be with rhyme scheme.
d. Topic shall be given by the judges on the spot while the title shall be provided by the
contestants.
e. Criteria for judging:
 Relevance to the topic - 40%
 Use of poetic devices - 20%
 Creativity/Originality - 40%

f. 10 winners shall be declared in this category.
5. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING
a. Open to Grade 11 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. Contestants should not wear school uniform or any identification; only casual attire.
c. Each contestant is given 3 minutes to prepare his/her speech and 3 minutes delivery.
d. A green flaglet is shown up to start the speech, yellow flaglet as warning, and red flaglet to stop.
e. Criteria for judging:
 Content / relevance to the topic - 30%
 Delivery - 30%
 Organization of ideas/reasoning/analysis - 30%
 Demonstration of sense of confidence and style - 10%

f. Coaches may stay at the back of judges but at least 3 meters away and should refrain from
talking and/or coaching. Anyone who will not abide will be requested to leave the contest room.
g. 10 winners shall be declared in this category.
6. SPOKEN POETRY
a. Open to Grade 12 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. The piece must be delivered in 2-5 minutes and must coincide with the theme “Reading is
Power”.
c. If it does not meet the 2-minute minimum, the contestant will be ineligible to place first, second
or third. If it goes beyond 5 minutes, expect to be stopped.
d. Use of background music is allowed.
e. Contestants must memorize the piece.
f. Contestant should not wear school uniform or any identification, only casual attire or any that
fits the piece.
g. Criteria for judging:
 Stage presence and presentation - 40%
 Poise and Spontaneity - 30%
 Intonation, poetic expression and a clear insight - 20%
 Clarity of spoken word and diction - 10%

talking and/or coaching. Anyone who will not abide will be requested to leave the contest room.
i. 10 winners shall be declared in this category.
7. READING MARATHON
a. Open to Grade 7 students who won first place in the 2019 Municipal English Olympics.
b. This is a group contest composed of 5 members.
c. Contestants shall be given 30 minutes to read the texts prepared by the Education Program
Supervisor in English. Note-taking is not allowed.
d. Comprehension quiz follows after the 30 minute reading allotment.
e. Each question shall be read twice; contestants are given 10 seconds to answer.
f. Contestants must bring ¼ illustration board cut crosswise, chalk and eraser.
g. 10 group winners shall be declared in this category.

NOTE: Point system shall be used in determining the overall champion.20 pts.-first place, 18 pts.- second- place,
16 pts.-third place, and so on and so forth. Top 3 in every contest shall receive medals and certificates;
top 4-10 shall receive certificates only. The coach, department head or coordinator, and principal of the
winning contestants shall receive certificates of recognition. Only the overall champion, first runner-up
and second runner- up will receive trophies.
