A phrase is a group of two or more words functioning as a meaningful unit within a sentence or

clause. A phrase can be short or long, but it does not include the subject-verb pairing necessary
to make a clause.
Example: Eat slowly, very bright and warm, after the rain

A clause is a group of words which includes a subject and predicate, functioning as a member of
a complex or compound sentence
Example: The Lion is growling, I speak loudly

A sentence is a set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate
Function: to convey a statement, question, exclamation, or command
Example: Jokowi declares victory for this year presidential election

A simple sentence contains one independent clause


Use simple sentences when presenting a limited amount of information, for example: to declare a
direct statement or to ask a question
Example: Please consider my application for the internship.

A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses. A coordinating conjunction


(for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) often links the two independent clauses.
Function: to unite 2 or more ideas that are on the same level
Example: I like apples, but my sister loves bananas

Complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause (or main clause) and at least
one dependent clause.
To expound facts or concepts in greater elaboration
Example: Jun left when his sister arrived

3. Complex sentence, it consist of 1 independent clause and 1 dependent clause
