CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

This project is on the design and construction of a motorized belt

driven power hacksaw machine for cutting of metal to different size and

length with the help of hacksaw. The objective of this project is to save man

power and time in cutting metals in order to achieve high productivity. It is a

cutting machine with teeth on its blade used specially for cutting metals.

A motor power hacksaw is an essential machine in most machine

shop operations. For many years a hand-operated hacksaw was the only

means for sawing off metal. Power-driven machines for driving metal-

cutting blades have been developed to make the task easier. The power

hacksaw can do the work much more rapidly and accurately.

The researcher would like to design a machine to make the sawing of

metal a mechanical operation. The stock is usually held in a vise mounted

on the base of the machine. An electric motor is used to supply power for

the machine.
2

Theoretical Background

The research work provides simple and affordable Motorized Belt

Driven Power Hacksaw attachment on a work place. The researchers

canvassed for possible materials to be used. The researchers attachment

is most useful in a small workshops where there is not enough space for

accommodating a power hacksaw. With the manufactured the required

components and purchased the standard components available in the

market. Power hacksaws are used to cut large sizes (sections) of metal

such as steels. Cutting diameters of more than 10/15 mm is very hard work

with a normal hand held hacksaw. Therefore power hacksaws have been

developed to carry out difficult and time consuming work.

FORMULA

For Cutting Size :

C=B–A

For Specification Motor :

Motor Pulley diameter= 0.03 m

Driven Pulley diameter= 0.3 m
Therefore, Reduction Ratio= 10:1
Speed of motor, N (driving) = 1200 rpm
Driven speed N (driven) = 120 rpm
Power = 0.25 hp = 0.186 kW
Torque T (Driving) = 1.48 Nm

Power = 2πTN/60

For Belt Distance :

C = (D + d) / 2

C = (.03 + .3)/ 2

C = .165 m

L = 2C + π ( D2 + D1) / 2 + ( D2 + D1 )*2 / 4C

L = 2(.165) + π(.03+.3)/2 + (.03+.3)*2/4(.165)

L = 1.013 m

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this research study is to design and fabricate a

Motorized Belt Driven Power Hacksaw and test its capabilities in cutting

materials.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following:

1. Design a motorized belt driven power hacksaw that can cut different

sizes of mild steel materials.

2. Identify the materials, motor speed and cutting performance.

3. Determine how the hacksaw blade work on a mild steel material and the

limits of what kind of the material to be cut using the motor power hacksaw.

4. Fabricate the motorized belt driven power hacksaw using the machine

shop techniques.

5. Evaluate the effectiveness of the motorized belt driven power hacksaw.

6. Identify the advantages of the motorized belt driven power hacksaw such

as: a) time-saving capabilities, b) cost, and c) cutting efficiency.

10

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study would be beneficial to the following people and agencies:

Construction Workers/ Laborers. They are the main benefactors of

this because their work will be made easier with the aid of the Motorized

Belt Driven Power Hacksaw.

Contractors. They will have more productive workers and be able to

utilize and save time because of the fast and hassle free cutting of mild

steel materials.

Construction Companies. They will be able to cut their mild steel

materials easier at a lower cost.

Researcher. They will be able to comply their school requirements

and be able to create an affordable cutting machine.

Future Researchers. This study will help the future researcher as a

guide for their future related research.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This thesis study involves a comparative analysis of a designed a

motorized belt driven power hacksaw in a local place where coolant is

applied by the operator.. The subject is being observed in a completely

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The study is to be conducted in the University of Cebu as shown in

figure 1. University of Cebu is an educational institution in Cebu City,

Philippines founded in 1964, offering preschool, grade school, junior &

senior high school, undergraduate degrees, and post-graduate degrees.

The said university has a number of branches namely: Main Campus,

Banilad Campus, Mambaling Campus, and Lapu-lapu – Mandaue Campus.

Figure 6: Location of the Study

13

A group of young men headed by lawyer Augusto W. Go, formed an

alliance and set up an educational institution of what was then called the

Cebu College of Commerce, then later renamed Cebu Central Colleges

(CCC). Starting with a handful of enrollees, the college was established on

April 1, 1964. It grew over time and became the University of Cebu. Its

philanthropic mantra has been "No tuition fee increase.” The researchers

chose the nearest campus which is the Main Campus located at

Sanciangko Street, Cebu City.

Research Respondents

A distinction should should be made between subject and

respondents of the study. Subject are person investigated in the study. It is

important to state your quality of your project and explain how the project

fabricate.
14

DEFINITION OF TERMS

BENCHVISE

The metal to be cut is held in a machine vice which is an integral part of

the base. Turning

the handle tightens or loosen the vice. The vice is very powerful and locks
the metals in

position.

BLADES

Blades of power hacksaws are graded according to the material they are
made from the

number of teeth per inch. Top quality blades are manufactured from High
Speed Steel.

Although there are cheaper alternatives such as carbon steel blades. In

general the number

of teeth per inch ( TPI ) range from 14 to 24. The more teeth per inch the
smoother the cut.

MOTOR

Electric motors produce linear or rotary force torque intended to propel

some external

mechanism, such as a fan or an elevator. An electric motor is generally

designed for

continuous rotation, or for linear movement over a significant distance

compared to its size.
