Case Study of Foreign Auto shop

TASK 01:What do you understand by leadership and strategic management? Explain in

details? What is the link between them?

Ans:Strategic management has a building block description to it.This is where the resourses
available to an organization are brought together.Financial, marketing, manpower, and other
organizational functions and capital are analysed to best determine how they can be used to reach
goals. The result are policies and process to guide activity. It can very easily said that strategic
management develops a roadmap that can be followed.

Leadership does play a role in strategic management.A leader brings together all of the various
group within an organization to develop the action design.By the power of communication and
persuation inherent in leadership, that person is going to convince everyone they are stakeholders
in the final results. He is the guide along the path that has been outlined by strategic management
planning.

Taking a look at the interconnection between them

Leaders are important to the strategic management work because of the ability to bring people
together. That doesnot mean that leaders act independent of the strategic plan.Infact, leaders rely
quite a bit on what has been determined and also those people assigned the various tasks. The
primary reason is that a strategic plan gives a sense of direction.Leaders can be visionary but
without something concrete those visions are not much more than those misty air.Leaders may
be very influential in deciding what the ultimate goal is,but trying to reach it without a strategy
would be like walking through a dark forest without a compass.Developed strategies also will
provide useful tools to any leader. The benchmark and timetables provide a justification to any
motivational efforts.Leaders try to be problem solvers. Those very same performance indices will
alert a leader to problem that need to be fine too.Incidentally ,strategic management is a living
operation. It is not something that is carved in solid stone.

TASK 02:In the above given case study, what kind of leadership style is the manager using and
what kind of impact it is having on the strategies of the organization?

Ans: IN THE ABOVE CASE 3 TYPES OF LEADERSHIP STYLES ARE USED

1. AUTOCRATIC

2. LAIZEZ FAIRE

3. TRANSFORMATIONAL

AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP STYLE- It is also known as authoritarian

leadership style. It is characterized by individual control over all decisions and

little input from group members.

“THREE YOUNG WORKER DO THE JOB THAT CALL FOR LOWER

LEVEL SKILLS,UNDER ALANS MORE CAREFUL GUIDANCE”

IMPACT-THE AUTOSHOP HAS A STEADY AND LOYAL

CLIENTELE WHO APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THEY RECEIVE

THE QUICK, RELIABLE SERVICES AT FAIR PRICE.

2.LAIZEZ FAIRE- They try to give the least possible guidance to

subordinates and try to achieve control through less obvious means. They know

people excel when they are left alone to respond to their responsibilities and

obligations in their own ways.

“HE LEAVES THE MECHANICS ALONE UNLESS THEY ARE HAVING A

PROBLEM AND NEED TECHNICAL ADVICE”

IMPACT- ALANS FAIRNESS AND OPENNESS HAVE EARNED HIM

THE CONTINUING RESPECT AND TRUST OF HIS EMPLOYEES.

3.TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP- When a leader works with team

to identify needed change creating a vision to guide the change through

inspiration and executing the change with committed member of a group.

Task 03: Alan has used two different kinds of leadership styles. Evaluate the leadership styles

and the situations in which Alan adapted them. Were the leadership styles successful? If
yes, explain the reasons for its success. (A.C.1.3)

Ans: In this case study, Alan uses Autocratic and Transactional style of leadership.

When Alan told his mechanics to put the tools away and help move all the boxes of parts and

supplies off the floor and into the storage racks in the storeroom and the office during the flood,

none of his mechanics were doing as they took it very casually. So, Alan strictly instructed his

employees that they have to do whatever Alan say them to do. This shows that Alan uses

autocratic style of leadership.

This style of leadership was successful at that situation as all his mechanics dropped

everything and began preparing for flash flood. Alan barked instructions and helped them

move everything that could be damaged by water. By the time the water was ankle-deep;

all the cars inside the shop had been jacked up and were sitting on cement blocks. So

Alan’s instructions helped him to save his auto shop from the flood.

In the case study it is given after the rain had stopped, the mechanics voluntarily returned to the

shop to help the clean up. Thus Alan thanked each one and gave them all the next

morning off. Alan gave all the credits to his mechanics for avoiding thousands of dollars

of property damage. He also pointed each ones contributions and thanked them. This

shows that Alan uses transactional style of leadership at that situation as transactional

style of leadership is a leadership style where the leaders relies on rewards and

punishments to achieve job performance from his employees.
