Task 1

For question number 1-3, Read the following text and answer the questions by finding out
the passive voice in the text !

Earthquake

Earthquake is one of the most destroying natural disasters. Unluckily it often happens in
several regions. Recently a horrible earthquake has shaken West Sumatra. It has brought
great damages. Why did it occur? Do you know how an earthquake happens?

Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This
sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves. It make the ground shake. When two
blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don’t
just slide smoothly. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a
while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that’s built up. When the rocks break, the
earthquake occurs.

During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they
continue to move until they get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks
is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus is called the
epicenter of the earthquake.

For question number 4-6, Read the following text and answer the questions by finding out
the pattern of passive voice in the text !

Flooding is a disaster which commonly happens in large and densely populated cities. In
Indonesia, the floods hit Jakarta very often and cause many victims. Then, do you know the
process of how flood happens? Pay attention to the following explanation.

The process of natural flooding is preceded by rain which falls to the surface of the earth.
Then the rain water is absorbed by the ground surface and flows to the lower place. Once
that condition happens, evaporation and the water appear to the surface of the land. Flooding
can be disastrous for humans when floods happen in an area that people live because the
water carries along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people.

On the other hand, the process of non natural flooding is usually caused by bad habits of
humans who do not care about the environment, such as littering that can make water flow
clogged. This makes the water deposited in landfills which gradually becomes more
common. When water reservoirs can no longer hold water discharge, the water then
overflows out the land and cause flooding.

the pattern of passive voice in the text !

Bogor is a City in northern Java Island, Indonesia. It is the part of West Java Province.
Together with Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, the City is included in the
Jabodetabek metropolitan area. Bogor has been known as the ‘Rain City’ of Indonesia and
‘Buitenzorg City’. the City stretches across 118,5 km2 areas. Bogor is World famous for its
Bogor Botanical Garden, a Conservation site for several plants and animals.

The City was Born in June 3rd 1482, when Padjadjaran Kingdom was existed in West
Java. You can see the city’s Landmarks such as Tugu Kujang, Prasasti Batu Tulis,
Cimahpar Integrated Conservation Offices, Telaga Cikeas, etc. Bogor City is surrounded
by several Mounts like Gunung Gede, and Gunung Halimun Salak.

the pattern of passive voice in the text !

Earthquake is one of natural disaster that destroying a certain area the most. It recently
happens in Tasikmalaya, West Java Province. Earthquakes are caused by suddenly breaks
of underground rock along a fault. This sudden release a huge amount of seismic waves
Energy. The ground will be shaken when it happen. When two plates or two blocks of rock
are rubbing against each other, they will be sticked together. But, they don’t slide smoothly.

The rocks are not moving but still pushing against each other. After several times, the
rocks will be broken due to all the pressure that’s built up. When those rocks break, the
earthquakes happen. This is horrible and we have to maintain our Environment, so there
will be no earthquakes happen.
