• Prime Minister Imran Khan spent the second day of his seven day visit to the United
Nations briefing US lawmakers, scholars, human rights activists and the media on the
repercussions of the Indian annexation of the disputed Kashmir valley.
• The lawmakers who called on the prime minister on September 22, 2019 include the US
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee
Lindsey Graham.
• Both are among the most important lawmakers on Capitol Hill and enjoy considerable
influence in their parties. Senator Schumer, a New York Democrat, is known for his interest
in human rights issues and can be very helpful in highlighting rights violations in held
Kashmir.
• Senator Graham, a Republican, is among a handful of lawmakers whom President Donald
Trump consults on major issues.
• Recently, he was twice sent to Pakistan to solicit Islamabad`s support for the Afghan
peace process.
• The chief executive officer of Economic Zones Development and Management Company
(EZDMC) has tendered resignation at a time when launch of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa`s largest
industrial estate is just round the corner.
• The EZDMC chief has cited `personal reasons` for resignation from the post.
• Saeed Ahmed, who had been heading the government-owned company for the last one and
half years, emailed his resignation on September 22, 2019 to the secretary of industries
department, who is also chairman of the company`s board.
• The resignation letter, a copy of which is available with Dawn, states that he is resigning
due to personal reasons as CEC with immediate effect from September 21.
• Mr Ahmed said that he recently moved his family to Canada for his children education and
was planning to return to continue his job, however, splitting the family at that stage while
children were very young was going to be inappropriate and stressful for the family as well
as himself. `As a result, my family and I decided to resign from the service,` he added.
• First time ever in the history of Khanewal district police, a woman police officer has been
posted as SHO Kuhna Police Station. District Police Officer Omer Saeed Malik posted lady
Sub-Inspector Zainab Malik as SHO of Kuhna Police with the aim to improve performance of
the police and its public image.
• SI Zainab Malik is an educated and competent police officer, this step would prove as
catalyst for changing mindset of the woman folk in the society and encourage them to join
the Police Department with complete faith.
• The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has declared that the Pakistan Telecommunication
Authority (PTA) is not empowered to block any website in violation of due process and
without hearing the other party.
• Besides this, a single bench of IHC comprising Chief Justice of IHC Justice Athar Minallah
has also directed the PTA to frame within three months the rules for blocking ‘unwanted’
websites after it learnt that the PTA had blocked over 800,000 websites in violation of the
statutory provision.
• The PTA revealed about blocking of these sites before the court during the hearing of a
petition filed against the blocking of the website of left-wing Awami Watan Party (AWP).
• After the PTA admission that the “rules [related to blocking of websites] have not been
prescribed yet” even three years after the enactment of relevant laws, the IHC Chief Justice
observed that under such circumstances, “blocking of website was indeed in violation of the
principles of natural justice”.
• The PTA under sub-section 1 of Section 37 of the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA),
2016 has been empowered to block the websites if the content is against the glory of Islam,
integrity, security and defense of Pakistan, public order, morality or contemptuous.
• US President Donald Trump on September 22, 2019 confirmed he did discuss former vice
president Joe Biden and corruption allegations in a phone call with Ukraine`s leader, as
Trump`s opponents called for his impeachment.
• A whistleblower`s complaint sparked off accusations that Trump had sought to persuade
President Volodymyr Zelensky to provide damaging information on Biden, Trump`s possible
2020 election challenger.
• Trump confirmed that the conversation, held in July, had addressed alleged corruption
involving Biden and his son Hunter, and he floated the possibility that a transcript could be
released.
• `We had a very great conversation, very straight, very honest conversation. I hope they
can put it out,` Trump said, repeating that he had done nothing wrong.
• A damning new UN report published on September 22, 2019 said the world is falling badly
behind in the race to avert climate disaster as a result of runaway warming, with the five-
year period ending 2019 set to be the hottest ever.
• It comes ahead of a major UN climate summit on Monday that will be attended by more
than 60 world leaders, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pushes for countries to
increase their greenhouse gas reduction targets.
• The report `highlights the urgent need for the development of concrete actions that halt
global warming and the worst effects of climate change, said its authors, the Science
Advisory Group to the summit.
• Average global temperature between 2015-2019 is on track to be the hottest of any five-
year period on record, according to the report, which was compiled by the World
Meteorological Organisation.
• The Nobel Peace Prize-winning surgeon whose hospital in war-torn Congo has treated
over 50,000 victims of sexual violence has launched a fund with the goal of providing
reparations for survivors of conflicts around the world.
• Dr. Denis Mukwege said in an interview that he and his team at Panzi Hospital in eastern
Bukavu province could physically and mentally help victims of rape and other abuse, but
that the only way to really heal survivors is for society to accept the wrong that was done to
them through reparations.
• Legal action can be taken against an alleged perpetrator, he said, but even in cases in
which women win, “there is no reparation.”
• Mukwege said reparations can be individual or collective, symbolic or financial, depending
on the victim, the case and the context.
9. Osaka wins Pan Pacific Open for first title on home soil
• Naomi Osaka won her first singles title since the Australian Open in January by beating
Russia`s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-3 in the Pan Pacific Open final on September 22,
2019.
• Enjoying strong support from a parochial crowd, the former top-ranked Osaka dominated
the match with her powerful groundstrokes and broke Pavlyuchenkova`s serve twice to take
the opening set in 31 minutes.
• Top-seeded Osaka didn`t ease off in the second set, denying the Russian any chance of
getting a foothold in the match and closed out with an ace.
• It is Osaka`s first title in the country of her birth she lost finals in Tokyo in 2016 and `18
and fourth in her career. She won back-to-back majors at the US Open in 2018 and the
Australian Open in January.
• Pakistani athletes on September 21, 2019 won the first-ever Khunjerab Highest Altitude
Road Marathon.
• It was a momentous occasion in the history of Pakistan as 154 ecstatic long distance
runners from across the world enthusiastically ran on the descending Karakoram Highway,
starting from the magnificent Khunjerab Top and ending at Sust, a small town in the
majestic pass.
• This highest ever marathon took place at an elevation of 4,693 meter above the sea level
near Khunjerab Top, and featured a unique blend of young and old, local and foreign, male
and female long distance runners, sweating out on the 8th wonder of the world.
• In 50 kilometers race, Mohammad Siyar from Pak Army clinched the first position,
whereas Aslam Khan from GB Scouts remained the runner-up. The third position was
clinched by Mohammad Iqbal.
• In the 42km race, army`s athletics team dominated, bagging the first three coveted
positions. Umair Haider secured first position and Mohammad Faheem and Sohail Tanveer
clinched the second and third spots, respectively.
