DISCIPLES SHOW
UNCONDITIONAL
LOVE
John 13:34 – 35
Matthew 22:36-40 NLT,
“Teacher, which is the most
important command…”
Jesus replied, “‘You must love
the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, and all your mind.’ This
is the greatest commandment.
A second is equally important: ‘Love
your neighbor as yourself.’”
Love for God and love for
each other are the
fundamental,
indispensable marks of
disciples of Jesus.
John 15:13 NIV,
“Greater love has no one than
this: to lay down one’s life for
one’s friends.”
The Greek word is
‘agape’ which means
‘selfless love’
God and others are
more important to us
than our own desires.
The word [agapao] will
never seek anything but the
highest good for others. It
does not need a chemistry,
an affinity or a feeling.
1 Cor 13:4-7 tells us what
love looks like:
Love is patient and kind
…does not envy or boast
…is not rude
…does not insist on its own
way
…is not irritable or resentful
…does not rejoice at
wrongdoing
…rejoices in the truth
…bears all things
…believes all things
…hopes all things
…endures all things
Disciples love one
another like a family.
They sharing what they
have…money, time, a
service or a skill.
Acts 2:41-47

5. DISCIPLES ARE
DEDICATED TO
THE GREAT
COMMISSION
Matthew 28:18–20
Win disciples, not
believers.
Believers change their
minds but disciples
change their Master
(and their lives).
“The goal of biblical leaders is
to equip disciples who make
disciples.”
Marcus Honeysett
6. A DISCIPLE ASKS
‘‘WHAT WOULD
JESUS DO?’’
A Disciple has Responsibility
In every situation.
Agree with Jesus to
always try to do what he
would do, 1 John 2:6.
Ask the Holy Spirit to
show us what Jesus would
do.
HOW DO YOU
MAKE DISCIPLES?
A practical exploration
Do what
Jesus did!
“The gospel we
preach determines the
disciples we produce.”
Bill Hull
Someone once asked George
Whitefield how many conversions
occurred in a meeting, and he
answered,
“I don’t know. We should know
in six months.”
A disciple is a follower of
Christ,
not just a believer in
Christ
A simple gospel message,
“Follow Jesus, and he will teach
you everything you will ever
need to know—but what Jesus
teaches will take a lifetime to
learn”
Jesus took ordinary people with
everyday, normal lives and made
them into world changers.
Do what
Jesus did!
So what did
Jesus do?
What have been the things
people have done in
discipling you that have
most helped you?
A. BE SPIRITUAL
Disciplemaking is firstly about God not about men
A.1. PRAY AND
FAST FOR THEM
Prayer must be your lifestyle.
Luke 5:15, 16
…even more the report about him went
abroad, and great crowds gathered to
hear him and to be healed of their
infirmities. 16 But he would withdraw
to desolate places and pray. [he was
regularly withdrawing…]
“…increasing crowds, the demands on
Jesus’ time, and the fact that no one
else could duplicate his ministry did not
stop Jesus spending long times in
prayer.”
Ajith Fernando
When did you last hear
a sermon on fasting?
(it is mentioned 75x in
the Bible compared to
74x for baptism!)
Why fast?
Jesus fasted
Jesus expects us
to fast—Matt 6:16
We fast…
To worship
To overcome temptation
To humble yourself
To show repentance
To seek God’s help
When we fast we are
screaming out at the top of
our lungs—I want God, I
want Christ more than I
want to please myself!
Col 4:2
Devote yourselves to
prayer with an alert
mind and a thankful
heart.
1 Thess 5:17
 Never stop praying.
Martin Luther,
“Tailors make clothes and
shoe repairers mend shoes,
so it is the business of
Christians to pray.”
A.2. BELIEVE IN
THEM AND SEE
THEIR
POTENTIAL
Recognise what God is
doing.
