Movie Review: The Negotiator

The Negotiator is an action film released on July 29, 1998, directed by F. Gary Gray and
starred by actors Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey.

The story revolves around Lt. Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson), an expert marksman and
explosives, and also a tactician. He is popularly known for having his operations achieve success and
resolving problems. A conflict aroused when his partner Nate was murdered. Danny was convicted
as the suspect and was taken into custody. But Danny knows that he was not the murderer of his
partner but he was framed up to a crime he did not commit. He started taking hostages into their
building in order to find more truth about the crimes and the corruption inside their organization and
that’s where the real conflict begins. Upon arriving to this conflict some people were involved other
than Danny and Nate. People like Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), an officer whom Danny only knew
by name because he cannot trust his friends at this situation anymore; Grant Frost (Ron Rifkin), one
of Danny’s closest friend but later he found out that he was the mastermind of setting him up to the
murder case; Inspector Niebaum (J.T Walsh), Officers Argento (Tim Kelleher), Hellman (Nestor
Serrano) and Allen (Leonard Thomas), who were also the accomplices of Frost for setting up Danny.
Chris Sabian helped Danny by revealing that Frost was the mastermind in the set up. After the
conflict was solved Danny regains his trust to his allies and he was proved innocent and not guilty to
his partner’s murder.

If I was in Danny’s shoes in that kind of situation I too would seek justice for my partner and
I will prove my innocence. But I’ll do it in a way that I won’t involve anyone like in the hostage-
taking situation. Rather than that I will conduct an investigation on my own. Piece by piece I will
find those who are behind my partner’s death and shall bring forth justice upon them and prove my
innocence to the world. But by doing this I must be away from my family so that I won’t involve
them in my vendetta and put their lives in danger. If in some chances I might be caught up in a
situation like Danny’s, life will be hard and my life will be on the line but no matter what I will solve
it on my own. From this story I learned that there will be times when everything will be put on the
line but we need to stay strong and never give up. There will also be those times when we will fully
depend on ourselves rather than others because no one can solve their personal problems other than
having complete trust and faith in yourself. At the end of the day our fate, our choices, our future is
always in our hands.
