CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Nowadays, it is very essential to be physically clean since

unhealthy body is prone to diseases and illness specially the young

ones. The researchers chose to make this product aiming to help the

school promote awareness to proper hygiene.

According to an article entitled ‘Is Lemon can be used as a

substitute to Calamansi’, it states that it has several major health

benefits worth mentioning. Both calamansi and lemon have a lot of

vitamin C. It is known for boosting and supporting the immune

system. This means that these two fruits greatly help to prevent and

cure bacterial and viral infections. Both calamansi and lemon have

pectin fiber. It’s no rocket science that odor is caused by excessive

amounts of bacteria living on the skin. Both calamansi and lemon have

powerful antibacterial qualities. In fact, all you have to do is rub some

calamansi or lemon extract on the armpits and other parts. You can

also add some of the extract to your bath water. This will also nourish

your skin and make you feel overall more refreshed.

2

Calamansi has vitamin C which enhances your beauty, by

rejuvenating or cleansing the skin inside and also brings a glow on the

face. It is because the vitamin C, is also known as ascorbic acid, which

is the key to production of collagen. Protein that aids in the growth of

cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength. One of

the natural benefits of calamansi is that it acts as a natural skin

bleaching agent. It is good for treating dark spots or discoloration of

the skin, erases scars and blemishes for more even skin tone.

On the other hand, Calamansi extracts is said to blend well in

other acidic fruits that is why the researchers manage to come up that

Malus Pumila also known as Apple is to be mixed.

Apple, like calamansi, also has a lot of skin benefits. According

to The Women’s Health, apple brightens and lightens the complexion

of the skin, it hydrates the skin, it has anti-aging benefits, it serves a

UV protection, and it helps lessen acne, blemishes and dark spots.

The researchers will first have their soap product made in

calamansi and apple extract and will be evaluated by a chosen

student, a teacher and LGU Health Personnel.

3

Statement of the Problem

This study focused on how effective the mixture of calamansi

and apple extract is as antibacterial beauty soap.

Specifically, it will answer on the following questions:

1.) What are the ingredients of Citrofortunella Microcarpa with Malus

Pumila Soap?

2.) What are the processes of making Citrofortunella Microcarpa

with Malus Pumila Soap?

3.) What is the acceptability of the Citrofortunella Microcarpa with

Malus Pumila Soap in terms of:

a. Appearance

b. Efficacy

c. Fragrance

4.) What is the shelf life of Citrofortunella Microcarpa with Malus

Pumila Soap?

Assumption

The following were the assumption of the study:

1. There can be a soap product that will be produced out of

Calamansi and Apple extract.

4

2. There are processes that are needed to be followed in making

Citrofortunella Microcarpa with Malus Pumila Soap product.

Significance of the Study

The result of this research may be beneficial to the following:

1. Students. May serve as a guide in making related

research/experiment.

2. Teachers. This may serve as an example in discussing topic

related to the present study.

3. Parents. This may serve as inspiration for the parents to use at

home.

4. Future Researchers. May serve as inspiration to conduct or

innovate other products.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on innovating new soap product made from

Calamansi and Apple extracts. The production of the soap will be

conducted at Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur and eventually select a

student, a teacher and an LGU Personnel. The product will be rated

with is level of acceptability in terms of efficacy, fragrance and

5

appearance. The experiment started on November 2018 and will end

on July 2019.

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted in Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur.

Sabang is one of 29 barangays or villages in the municipality of San

Jose, Camarines Sur in the Philippines. It is about 7 kilometers away

from the poblacion. The word "sabang" refers to a place that can be

found at the mouth of a river. Since Sabang is located at the very

mouth of the Lagonoy River, obviously, people use it as the name of

the place. Barangay Sabang is classified as an urban place and is

composed of 6 puroks or zones. It is generally described as plain and

coastal with a total land area of 41.489800 hectares. It is bounded to

the east by Lagonoy Gulf, and in the west by Quinayangan River of

Lagonoy, Camarines Sur. Its major sources of livelihood are

agriculture, fishing, cargo and baggaging service, inter-island

watercraft tourist travel, resorts and hotel services, as well as food

kitchenettes. It has a total population of 2,958. Sabang is known for

its many tourist spots like Sabang Beach, Sabang River, historical

landmarks and the church with its beautiful scenery in front. They also

showcase different dishes of Malasugi and other fish products.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the

thorough and in-depth search done by the proponents. For further

understanding of the study, the proponents made use of different

reading materials related to the topic. These materials such as books,

thesis, and other web articles are essential in broadening the

knowledge of the proponents. These will also guide the researchers to

achieve the target objective by getting ideas on the other related

studies and make improvements as possible.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Natural Extract Skin and Hair Care Solutions,

Calamansi Soap is a skin bleaching agent, it also cleanses body dirts, it

is an underarm deodorizer, it fights body odor, removes dandruff and

increases hair volume.

Agreeing with this, Georginasasha Company also said that it

cleanses skin naturally without drying skin and lightens uneven skin

tone beautifully.
10

On the other hand, according to Skin Potions Company, apple

soap gently removes dead cells and dirt with apple cider vinegar,

which contains AHAs; deep cleans pores to purify skin; moisturizes,

nourishes, and heals with honey extract; fights pimple-causing germs

with antibacterial and anti-fungal coconut oil as it softens and

smoothens skin.

The combination of Calamansi and other fruit acids are

believed to help skin shed dead skin cells and reveal a smoother,

rosier and less wrinkled surface. Soaps made with calamansi may be

designed for use on the body, or especially for the facial area.

Sometimes these soap will be used alongside toners and moisturizers

that also contain calamansi (Anonymous, 2019)

RELATED STUDIES

The researchers are creating an effective hand and body soap

with ingredients that are usually found locally. Calamansi is an

example of this local ingredient that is needed for making antibacterial

and beauty soap. Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa or

Citrofortunella mitis) is an important citrofortunella, meaning that the

Calamondin is an intergenetic hybrid between a member of the genus

11

citrus (in this case probably the mandarin orange) and the kumquats

belong to Fortunella.

Soaps containing Calamansi extracts may also feature fruit

extracts with built-in AHA`s, such as Papaya extract. The combination

of Calamansi and other fruit acids are believed to help the skin shed

dead skin cells and reveal a smoother, rosier and less wrinkled

surface. Soaps made with Calamansi may be designed for use on the

body, or especially for the facial area. Sometimes, these soaps will be

used alongside toners and moisturizers that also contain Calamansi.

Shampoos, conditioners and hair products containing Calamansi

may be used to clean, condition and groom the hair. These products

will use small percentages of Calamansi extract, alongside larger

concentrations of typical shampoo, hair conditioner and hair product

ingredients, such as aloe vera extract and mild detergents.

Lotions containing Calamansi may be applied to the face and

body in the morning and at night. Twice daily application of these

ingredients allows for smoother skin, due to the acidic nature of

Calamansi, which helps to overturn dead skin cells. Sometimes, extra

sunscreen with UVA.UVB protection should be used, to counteract the

12

extra sensitivity of the complexion after exposure to fruit acids, such

as Calamansi.

This Filipino beauty secret is found in the splendid tropical

regions of the Southeast Asian island; Calamansi trees grow in

abundance, offering Filipino men and women easy access to this

healthful extract (Hayes, 2011).

In the research entitled ‘Calamansi Fruit Extract as Chemical

Substance in Perfumes’, calamansi is said to be a better distributer in

making perfumes rather than other essential oils (Sanchez & Bergado,

2017). The same goes with another research entitled Çalamansi

(Citrofortunella Microcarpa) Fruit Extracts as Perfume’that concluded

that 85% of the alternative hypothesis is saying that Calamansi fruit

extract can be an alternative substitute for the chemicals used in

making perfumes take over the Null Hypothesis that is saying the

opposite of the alternative hypothesis (Desuasido et., al. 2014).

It is said that calamansi pure extract can be used as the main

ingredient in making antibacterial hand sanitizer. (Baon et. al., 2014)

Another research entitled ‘citrus fruits as a bacterial hand sanitizer’,

said that Aloe Vera together with orange which is one of that citrus
13

fruit that can be used to make hand sanitizer more jelly and more

hydrating to the skin. The same goes in a research entitled ‘Çalamansi

Extract Used as Hand Sanitizer’, that tells that calamansi is effective to

be used in making hand sanitizer (Bangonon et., al. 2013).

In the other hand, apples, according to research made by The

Womens Health, it brightens and lightens the complexion of the skin, it

hydrates the skin, it has anti-aging benefits, it serves as UV

protection, it helps lessen acne, blemishes and dark spots. The

research from Annmarie Skin Care for their Wild Alchemy Collections

agrees with it also. Their research concluded that apple extract is

loaded with alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs), malic acid being the most

abundant--which means that unlike the gentlest exfoliants, apple

extract has no scrubbing bits or micro beads—the acids break up the

protein that holds the skin together, helping to slough off the dead

skin that gives your skin a dull appearance. The AHAs and

carbohydrates used their products are also great for holding in

hydration. They help by creating a barrier on the skin that reduces

water loss without clogging pores. Because of the protective coat,

apple is also excellent for locking in moisture.

14

Also, according to Vert Fresh and Handmade Company’s

research foe their Apple and Chamomile Extract Body Lotion, they

used apple for it gently tones, degrees and refresh the skin. The body

lotion is said to repair the skin to leave it feeling nourished. It has

anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and bacterial chamomile properties in it

that protects your skin and calm your senses.

Synthesis of the State-of-the-Art

Natural Extract Skin and Hair Care Solutions tells that Calamansi

Soap is a skin bleaching agent, it also cleanses body dirts, an

underarm deodorizer, fights body odor, removes dandruff and

increases hair volume. Georginasasha Company also said that it

cleanses skin naturally without drying skin and lightens uneven skin

tone beautifully.

On the other hand, Skin Potions Company said that apple soap

gently removes dead cells and dirt with apple cider vinegar, which

contains AHAs; deep cleans pores to purify skin; moisturizes,

nourishes, and heals with honey extract; fights pimple-causing germs

with antibacterial and anti-fungal coconut oil as it softens and

smoothens skin.
15

An anonymous writer said that the combination of Calamansi

and other fruit acids are believed to help skin shed dead skin cells and

reveal a smoother, rosier and less wrinkled surface

Desuasido & Potonia, 2014, tells about the skin benefits of

calamansi and The Womens Health, tells the skin benefit of the apple.

Sanchez and Bergado, 2017, Desuasido et., al, 2014, Baon et.,

al, 2014 and Bangonon et., al, 2013 tells that Calamansi can be used

as an ingredient to a product that has a lot of skin benefits. In this

four groups, Sanchez and Bergado, 2017 and Desuasido et. al., 2014

concluded that Calamansi fruit can an alternative substance for the

chemicals used in making perfumes. And the other two, Baon et. al.,

2014 and Bangonon et., al, 2013, tells that calamansi is effective to be

used in making hand sanitizer.

On the other hand, Vert Fresh and Handmade Company likewise

with the research of Annmarie Skin Care Company tells that apple is

good ingredient in making a beauty product.

Gap Bridged of the Study

The study aims to know how effective the mixture of calamansi

and apple extract is as antibacterial beauty soap. So far, the

16

researchers have found no similar study combining both extracts of

the Calamansi and Apple Fruits as the main ingredient to an innovated

soap. Thus is the gap that this study attempted to bridged.

Definition of Terms

Citrofortunella Microcarpa. A scientific name for Calamansi or

Calamondin and an ingredient to the soap product.

Malus Pumila. A scientific name for apple and an ingredient to

the soap product.

Extract. A substance made by extracting a part of a raw

material, often by using a solvent such as ethanol or water.

AHA’s. Alpha Hydroxyl Acids offers a remarkable benefit for sun

damaged skin.
17

CHAPTER III

Research Design and Methodology

Research Design

This study employs the use of qualitative research design which

is the process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks in-depth understanding

of social phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses on “why”

rather than the “what” of social phenomena and relies on the direct

experiences of human beings as meaning-making agents in their

everyday lives. Rather than by logical and statistical procedures,

qualitative researchers use multiple systems of inquiry for the study of

human phenomena including biography, case study, historical analysis,

discourse analysis, ethnography, grounded theory and

phenomenology. One of the qualitative methods which the researchers

will use is interviewing the respondents the level of acceptability in

terms of appearance, texture and fragrance.

The Respondents

The respondents of the study will be one student, one teacher,

and one LGU Health Personnel to determine the general acceptability

of the product.
18

Sampling Methodology

The researchers made use of purposive sampling. Purposive

sampling is a sampling technique that qualitative researchers used to

recruit participants who can provide in-depth and detailed information

about the phenomenon under investigation. It is highly subjective and

determined by the qualitative researcher generating the qualifying

criteria each participant must meet to be considered for the research

study.

Research Procedure

This research underwent the following procedures: first, is the

conceptualization of the topic. Next was the statement of the problem.

Then, after Chapter 3 the researchers started experimenting or

innovating the soap product and evaluated by the respondents. Then,

the tabulation of data. After these, was the processing of analysis and

the outcome of the data.

Data Gathering Instrument

This study made use of individual interview. The interview was

designed to get valuable information needed in the study. The

19

respondents were interviewed about their evaluation of the level of

acceptability of the product in terms of the appearance, efficacy and

fragrance. The result of the interview was analyzed and interpreted by

the researchers.
20

CHAPTER IV

Results and Discussions

CHAPTER V
Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Problem 1. What are the ingredients of Citrofortunella

Microcarpa with Malus Pumila Soap?

Findings

Odorless and Colorless Soap Base

Calamansi Extracts and Apple Extracts

Green Food Color

Conclusion

The ingredients are Odorless and Colorless Soap Base,

Calamansi Extracts, Apple Extracts and Green Food Color.

Recommendation

The soap base must be used two months after the purchased

date and the two fruits must be refrigerated to avoid rotting.

Problem 2. What are the processes of making Citrofortunella

Microcarpa with Malus Pumila Soap?

First, the researchers prepared Calamansi and Apple fruit for

extraction. They extracted the juices of both fruits in different

containers. The calamansi extract measures 50ml while the apple

25

extract measures 35ml. Afterwards, they grated the Calamansi

peel for the visual appeal and additional fragrance. The researchers

bought an odorless and colorless soap base from an online

store/shop. The soap base was melted through steaming, as the

soap base starts to melt; they stirred it evenly until it was liquefied.

As the soap base liquefies, the calamansi and apple extract was

added and mixed. The mixture was placed in a mold and stored it in

a cool and dry place until it hardens.

26

Recommendation

The soap base must be greater than the extracts of the two

fruits in order for the product to solidify in a faster way.

Problem 3. What is the acceptability of the Citrofortunella

Microcarpa with Malus Pumila Soap in terms of Appearance,

Efficacy and Fragrance?

Findings

As the researchers interviewed and made the respondents use

the product, the acceptability of Citrofortunella Microcarpa with Malus

Pumila Soap in terms of appearance is very acceptable. In terms of

efficacy, it is acceptable however, there’s a recommendation from a

respondent to make the soap firmer or harder by texture. While in

terms of fragrance, it is fairly acceptable because the respondents

recommended on making the fragrance of both fruits be balanced for

only the scent of calamansi is dominant.

Conclusion

Thus, the general acceptability of the innovated soap is

acceptable but just needs improvement in terms of fragrance.

27

Recommendation

The fragrance of the soap must be balanced with the two fruits

for calamansi is reigning the smell of the soap well in fact there is also

apple extract.

Problem 4. What is the shelf life of Citrofortunella Microcarpa

with Malus Pumila Soap?

Findings

According to Homestead and Survival, organic soaps have a shelf

life of 18 through 24 months as long as it is stored in a cool and dark
