E. Significant scientific contributions in the field of agricultural research and

development: Made significant contributions to various aspects of science of
Nematology/Plant Pathology/Plant Protection, recognized nationally and
internationally.

10
I. Significant contributions were made for the development of agro-technology
for improved cultivation of one of the most valuable cash crop, the mint,
Mentha spp., which is known for its essential oil. The mint oil and its
constituents have great demand in cosmetic, flavoring, perfumery and
pharmaceutical industries. In India, earlier the entire requirement of mint oil was
met through import, during 1996-97 country earned Rs. 10.49 million through
the export of 2.12 million kg of mint oil. This has been made possible by the
continuous improvement in the germplasm of mint for its high yielding qualities.
As a result of concerted efforts, a high yielding clone of Mentha arvensis cv.
Himalaya with high menthol content was developed for commercial cultivation
(Kumar et al., 1998) and an International Patent was also achieved (U.S.
Application Serial No. 08/855,768, Patent No. PP 10935, dated 16-01-1999)
[As Member of the Team]. With the development of the new clone of Mentha
arvensis cv. Himalaya, export prospects of mint oil increased many fold and
the country has earned more foreign exchange. For the above contributions
we received CSIR, New Delhi Technology Award[As member of the Team]
for the year 1999.
II. Made an original contribution to study on the diseases of complex etiology
affecting the productivity of pulses, medicinal and aromatic plants and
specially vegetables, and developed the agrotechnology for the management
of the diseases through biointensive management strategies and
popularized the technology among the farmers of Aligarh, Agra,
Bulandshahar, Hathras and Mathura districts. The IPM technology for
vegetables was developed by the financial support of UPCAR, Lucknow and
the technology was adopted by the farmers and the IPM technology developed
for the management of pulses was carried by the financial support of NAT
Project of ICAR.
III. For the first time identified the species of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne
incognita and M. javanica) as a serious constraint to the cultivation of
Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis), Scotch spear mint (M. cardiaca), species of
henbane (Hyoscyamus albus, H. muticus and H. niger), davana (Artemisia
pallens) and different species of basil (Ocimum basilicum, O. canum, O.
gratissimum, O. sanctum and O. kilimandscharicum). Established the
pathogenicity. Also for the determined the effect of root-knot nematodes on
the morphological characteristics and physiological process for crop
productivity.
IV. Studies were also made for molecular and biochemical characterization of
several bacterial and fungal bioagents for the development of biopesticides
and also developed the package of agrotechnology for the management of
diseases of complex etiology of pulses, vegetables and mint crops in
experimental as well as farmer’s fields as a part of UPCAR, DBT and
(NATP and AICRP) ICAR-New Delhi funded projects. Potential strains of
various bio-inoculants (viz., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, P.
putida, Sternotrophomonas acidaminiphila, Trichoderma harzianum and T.
virens) were identified and tested in laboratory and experimental fields for
the management of the diseases of important crops. The genome of the
potential strains were sequenced and submitted and the information is

11
available on EMBL in Europe and DNA data bank of Japan. The potentiality
of these bioinoculants were also demonstrated successfully in the farmer’s
fields while adopting IPM strategies to improve agriculture productivity.
V. For the first time more than hundred medicinal and aromatic plants were
reported as a new host for the root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita
and M. javanica. About twenty weed plants were also reported as new host
records of M. javanica.
VI. Determined the effect of various soil types and pH levels on the
reproductive and damage potential of root-lesion nematodes, Pratylenchus
thornei on Mentha citrata, M. piperita and M. spicata.
VII. Made an original contribution to study the diseases of complex etiology
affecting the productivity of vegetables, pulses, medicinal and aromatic
plants causing enormous losses to these crops. Developed the
agrotechnology for the management of theses diseases through Integrated
Management Options.
VIII. Germplasm of important pulses and vegetable crops were screened against
Meloidogyne species and Fusarium species to identify sources of resistance
against these pathogens.
F. Extension:
Contributed immensely in the demonstrations, popularization and transfer of
agro-technologies through extensive field visits, , extension lectures, radio and
T.V. talks, published extension bulletins, involvement in various extension
programmes arranged by the institute and various other agencies, conducted
Farmer’s Meet under AICRP- Nematode project.
As Vice-Chancellor special efforts were made for proper functioning of
KVK’s. Started various job-oriented and income generating programmes at
KVK’s under the jurisdiction of university for doubling the farmer’s income as
desired by the Govrment.Orgaized various extension events i.e. Kisan Melas,
Farmer’ Meet, New India Manthan (Sankalp Se Siddhi ) Programme, Swachhta
pakhwada, Soil Health Day, Kisan Samman Divas and Agriculture Education
Day etc.

G. Publications:

C. As Vice-Chancellor at N. D. University of Agriculture and Technology,

Kumarganj, Faizabad:
14
Performed the duties as administrative head of the university and
worked with the mandate to promote excellence, foster high standard in
teaching, research and extension with the vision and mission of providing
national leadership and maintaining international standards in the field of
agricultural sciences. All efforts were directed towards bringing high standards
in teaching, research and extension as per the mandate, by time to time review
of all offices, continuous monitoring by holding meetings/interactions with the
staff and regular vigil on the status of compliance of directive issued time to
time.
The administrative bodies like Board of Management, Academic
Council, Research Advisory Committee, Extension Advisory Committee which
were defunct for last many years, were reactivated and regular meetings were
convened to streamline the functioning in teaching, research and extension. The
activities and monthly performance of 17 KVKs were regularly monitored to
insure that they work as per the mandate allotted to them by ICAR, Government
of India. The project coordinators were strictly directed to achieve the set goal
by all means within the time frame. In research evolved a set of definite and
strict guidelines for release of technology to ensure quality, credibility and
reliability of research output. The major research focus was to develop high
yielding varieties of all important crops resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Special attention was paid to maintain punctuality, discipline, sincerity
and faithfulness to duty for the students, teachers and staff members of the
university including its 6 colleges and 17 Krishi Vigyan Kendras. Special drive
is on for making the university campus clean and green. Some of the significant
achievements during this period were, holding 16th, 17th and 18 th anf 19 th
Convocations, NAAC accreditation of the university by the PRT-ICAR, New
Delhi and conducted U.P.CATET successfully by this university followed by the
successful completion of admission process, got the Veterinary College
recognized with the bringing of good number of teaching posts, opening of 3
new colleges, sanction of Rs.2.0 crores to establish “ Center of Excellence in
Rice” , Rs 1.5 crores for “Creation of Seed Hub” and sanction of 8 new KVKs
by the Government besides organization of a number of academic and extension
events, i.e, workshops, training programmes, Symposia/Seminars,
Winter/Summer schools, Kisan Melas, Farmer’Meet, Sankalp Se Siddhi
programmes, World Soil Day and Agriculture Education Day e.t.c.
For financial management, in-time disbursement of salary was ensured
inspite of financial crunch and long pending dues of Arrears, GPF and pension
etc. were released on priority basis. The process of purchase was streamlined by
continuous monitoring, e-tendering, appointing high level verification
committee and strengthening the central purchase committee etc.
Keeping in view, the long pending audit objections, the effective steps
were taken since 2014 to drop the objections raised earlier. It is also ensured that
all procedures laid down must be followed as per rules, so that audit objections
may not be raised any more. It was also instructed that all issues related to
various objections should be decided in a very transparent manner as per act and
statutes.
The biggest obstacle in bringing the excellence in teaching, research and
extension, the university was facing, that nearly half of the sanctioned posts of

15
the employee right from top to bottom were lying vacant and hundreds of court
cases were long pending since 1980 to 2014 in the Hon’ble High Courts and
District Courts. Many times university confronts very odd situations of
contempt proceedings due to one or other reasons which were supposed to be
resolved two decades earlier. With the concerted efforts, the rate of fresh cases
brought down to nearly one third or fourth. Our motto has always been that with
the concerted efforts, to achieve the excellence in teaching and research in the
main stream of the country and global perspective and our passed out students
may get excellent jobs in their specialized areas and excel in state and the
country.
