Research Methodology

In this chapter, the research methodology used in the study is described. The

geographical area where the study was conducted, the study design and the population

and sample are described. The instrument used to collect the data, including methods

implemented to maintain validity and reliability of the instrument are described.

Research Design

This study utilized a descriptive-correlational method which is designed for the

experimenter to collect details about the conditions that are needed in the study.

The researchers seeks to understand what kind of relationships naturally occurring

variables have with one another.

Thus, the researchers determined the profile of the respondents as to age, sex,

grade point average in their last grade level, learning style, personality, and their

alcoholic habits. Likewise, the study identified the performance of the respondents in

the pre-test that is being conducted by the researcher with the use of survey

questionnaire. The study described the respondents mean gain score from the

pre-test or survey. Finally, with the use of survey, the data collected explained the

significant relationship between the respondent's alcoholism and their academic

performance.

Respondents of the Study

The study was conducted at Universidad de Manila Downtown Campus. The

subject of the study composed of one hundred sixty six (166) PM shift, Grade 12

students. As the study will pursue an questionnaire type of survey, it examined the

relationship of alcoholism and academic performance of grade 12 students, pm shift

in Universidad de Manila, Downtown Campus, Annex. In finding the respondents, the

student should be inclined or drinking alcohol.

Research Instrument

The instrument used was a researcher-made questionnaire checklist to gather

the needed data for the student’s profile. In the preparation of the instrument, the

requirements in the designing of good data collection instrument were considered.

Open-ended options were provided to accommodate the free formatted views

related to the topic. The questionnaire consists of different sections with each of the

sections are collecting information on the variable of interest. It comprised of five

sections and the first one is used to captured the demographic information of the

participants. The next section is used to measure the drinking behavior of the

participants. Then, the reasons of students being binge in alcohol, and if they are

aware of the effects of alcohol in their academic performance. Lastly, is to know the

best way to lessen the students alcoholism.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers personally administered the research instruments to the

respondents. The researchers conferred and discussed the significance of the study
and accomplished the distributions of the instruments properly. The respondents

were given 10 minutes to accomplish the forms to prevent them from giving hasty

responses. The researchers went from one section to another on collecting the

accomplished questionnaires. After the questionnaires have been accomplished, the

results were tallied and tabulated. These data became the basis of analysis and

interpretation.
