Passive and Active

Passive Active

• PassiveSONAR™ Flowmeters utilise a • ActiveSONAR™ Flowmeters utilise an active

passive array of strain-based sensors array of sensors clamped-on to the outside of the
clamped-on to the outside of the pipe pipe

• Coherent vortical structures are created • Measuring the same principals as the
by the flow in a pipe due to the pipe wall PassiveSONAR™ but introducing a sound
shearing mechanism inherent in virtually all source
flow streams
• The sensors transmit a signal through the flow
• Each vortical structure has a unique identity, medium to a receive sensor at the opposite side of
similar to a finger print the pipe

• These sensors listen to the strain generated • These signals are amplified and signal processed
by the naturally occurring flow turbulence using SONAR to determine the flow rate of the
medium in the pipe ©Copyright Expro 2016

❑ Out of 280 SONAR tested wells, 269 well tests were acceptable
and 11 well tests were questionable (6%)
▪ 6 Wells – Need a smaller diameter spool to increase the
flow velocity to better match SONAR operating envelope.
▪ 5 Wells – Under revision
Average Difference Qo,SONAR vs Qo,CST = 10%

❑ Out of 60 MPFM tested wells, 54 tests were acceptable and 6

were questionable (10%)
