Young People invited to Get Loud at the Library

National Youth Week celebrates young people for the positive contribution they make to
their communities. The theme of this year’s National Youth Week, which will run from
Saturday 10 April to Sunday 18 April, is ‘Live it Now’.

Thomastown Library will be transformed into a lively entertainment hotspot for young people
when it hosts the Get Loud event on Saturday 17 April from 12.00noon until 4.00pm.

Local up-and-coming young performers including Revival, Junior, and a DJ, will provide a
soundtrack to the afternoon, which will also include giant outside extreme games, a games
room with big-screen Nintendo Wii, Xbox and Playstation sessions and classic arcade games, a
DJ workshop, pool and table tennis tables, and a raffle to win a Nintendo DS.

Now in its fourth successful year, the Get Loud library events celebrate local young talent and
are becoming a staple on the community calendar. Young people are invited to come along to
the event to have fun and show their support for local artists.

The event is a collaboration between Queen takes Jack — Whittlesea's committee of young
people responsible for organising local youth events — Whittlesea Youth Services and Yarra
Plenty Regional Library.

YPRL Youth Services Coordinator Daniela Gullaci said the event promises to be lively and loud.
“The aim of this event is to celebrate and recognise the contributions of young people in our
community. Get Loud involves young people in the planning and implementation process, so
that an event will be delivered for young people and by young people,” she said.

YPRL Chairperson and Nillumbik Shire Councillor, Lewis Brock said the library is eager to host
events like Get Loud.

"The events help young people across the region to develop their skills and become more
connected to the local community. It also provides young people with something safe and fun to
do in an area where there’s not a lot for them to do.

"We’re excited to provide venues where young people can engage positively with their
community, showcase their talents and have a voice in the library," Cr Brock said.

This event is supported by the Victorian Government and beyondblue: the national depression
initiative (www.beyondblue.org.au) Beyondblue has teamed up with National Youth Week
organisers across Australia to raise awareness of depression, anxiety and related drug and
alcohol problems among young people.
The event kicks off at 12.00noon on Saturday 17 April and runs until 4.00pm at Thomastown
Library, 52 Main Street, Thomastown. For more information about 'Get Loud' at Diamond Valley
