Name of Proponent: Del Rosario, Sherwina Marie A.

School Year / Trimester: 1st Trimester / S.Y. 2019 – 2020

Proposed Title: “Factors Affecting Depression among Selected

College Students of AMA Computer College –

working. To be diagnosed with clinical depression, the symptoms must be present

Research for the Choice of Project:

Most college students are in early adulthood stage and the researcher

noticed that they are more emotional and more sensitive than other people. Based

on their behavior, the researcher observed that they have the higher chance to

have and to be diagnosed with clinical depression.

Importance of the Study:

The significance of this study is to determine the prevalence of depression

and to identify the risk factors affecting depression College Students in AMA

Computer College – Biñan Campus. This study will also help the readers to have

knowledge and awareness about clinical depression and its true definition. This

study also aims to find out the possible effects of depression among college

students.

The findings of this study could be used to develop the knowledge of early

adults to what they are going through. The results will be useful to schools and

other psychological setting, as this will be a guide that will help them to understand

the students who are going through depression. Also, reviewing the knowledge

that is currently being shared, helped determine what specific areas lacked data

and required further exploration.

Similarities with any Previous Study / Project:

There has been an increase in the rate of depression especially to young

adults and that is the reason why the researcher wanted conduct studies that will

know the possible factors that can affect depression among college students.

However, considering that there are a lot of possible factors, there is a limited

amount of research that has been conducted pertaining to the effect that it has on

depression.

One of the similar studies was The Impact of Social Media on Depression,

conducted on 2017 by Daria Krylovia states that among a sample of individuals,

there are multiple factors related to social media use that can potentially contribute

to their level of depression. These include unsettling news, exclusion, negative

posts, conflicting views, cyberbullying, too much time spent on social media and

recalling past experiences. This signifies that the duration and frequency spent on

social media does not necessarily impact an individual’s level of depression. [6]

The similarity of this study is that mostly of the teenagers use social media

a lot and because of that, it can be one of the possible factors that can lead them

to have a clinical depression. The difference of the study is that the study

mentioned above was focused only on the impact of social media on depression

and the age bracket used are ranging from early adulthood to middle adulthood

which is from eighteen (18) to thirty-four (34) years old.

Effects of Depression on Students’ Academic Performance by Dr. Abid G.

Chaudhry on 2015 states that there is a negative effect of depression on student’s

academic performance whereas there is a significance difference between the

academic performance of the students having low, average and high level of

depression. He found out that during college life, many students experience the

first symptoms of depression that depressed students often feel sad and

reductions in academic performance. Student’s Academic performance which

every individual have to perform in all cultures has become an important goal of

the educational process. Student’s personality, education, motivation, mental

health and training also effect academic performance.[1]

The similarity of this study is that the participants are students that most of

their time, they are at school, busy doing their school works that are related to their

academics, and already planning what they want to be after college. The difference

of the study is that it is more focused on academic performance of the students.

The Risk for Early Adulthood Anxiety and Depressive Disorders in

Adolescents with Anxiety and Depressive Disorders by Daniel S. Pine,

MD; Patricia Cohen, PhD; Diana Gurley, PhD; et al explained that an anxiety or

depressive disorder during adolescence confers a strong risk for recurrent anxiety

or depressive disorders during early adulthood. Most anxiety and depressive

disorders in young adults may be preceded by anxiety or depression in

adolescence.[5]

The similarity of this study is that it shows the depressive disorders during

early adulthood while the difference it also talked about anxiety during adolescence

stage.

to her. Third, the number of possible respondents that will be used for data

gathering. Lastly, the probable limit of resources.
