ABSTRACT
The purpose of this activity of cellular transport is to see how the molecules of starch
and iodine moves from the plastic bag to the glass beaker . by this experiment we
can know from which concentration the particles move to the other solution. in this
experiment how small hydrophilic electrolytes are passed through the membranes
and which pathways and mechanisms are used through the membrane.

INTRODUCTION
Cell transport is movement of materials across cell membranes it includes
passive and active transport. Passive transport does not require energy whereas
active transport requires energy to proceed. Passive transport proceeds through
diffusion, facilitated diffusion and osmosis. It refers to the collection of mechanisms
that regulate the passage of solutes such as ions and
small molecules through biological membranes, which are lipid bilayers that
contain proteins embedded in them. The regulation of passage through the
membrane is due to selective membrane permeability - a characteristic of biological
membranes which allows them to separate substances of distinct chemical nature. In
other words, they can be permeable to certain substances but not to others.
The movements of most solutes through the membrane are mediated by membrane
transport proteins which are specialized to varying degrees in the transport of
specific molecules. As the diversity and physiology of the distinct cells is highly
related to their capacities to attract different external elements, it is postulated that
there is a group of specific transport proteins for each cell type and for every specific
physiological stage[1]. This differential expression is regulated through the
differential transcription of the genes coding for these proteins and its translation, for
instance, through genetic-molecular mechanisms, but also at the cell biology level:
the production of these proteins can be activated by cellular signalling pathways at
the biochemical level, or even by being situated in cytoplasmic vesicles.

METHODOLOGY
In this activity of determining the transport of the molecules through the membrane
we are using 2 plastic bags, rubber bands, 2 beakers, corn starch, iodine, water, 50
ml graduated cylinder, teaspoon . we have to Label two clean glass 200ml beakers 1
& 2 and Pour approximately 100 mL of water into each beaker. Add 1 teaspoon of
corn starch into beaker 1. Stir until mostly or fully mixed. 4. Add 10 drops of iodine
into beaker 2. Use the graduated cylinder to pour 30 mL of water into a plastic bag.
Add 10 drops of iodine to the bag. Rubber band to seal the bag. Gently place the
bag into beaker Record/draw the initial colour and Use the graduated cylinder to
pour 30 mL of water into the other plastic bag. Add 1 tsp of corn starch to the bag
and mix well. Rubber band to seal the bag. Gently place the bag into beaker 2.
Record observations. Let the bags sit for 10-15 minutes. Record the observations
seen .

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

CONCLUSION
We have concluded by this activity that the cell membrane is selectively permeable,
allowing only certain substances to pass through and Cell transport may require
assistance by a protein/pump .Cell transport may require energy . Some transport
involves vesicles. Cell transport refers to the movement of substances across
the cell membrane . Probably the most important feature of a cell's phospholipid
membranes is that they are selectively permeable. A membrane that is
semipermeable, has control over what molecules or ions can enter or leave the cell,
This feature allows a cell to control the transport of materials, as dictated by the cell's
function. The permeability of a membrane is dependent on the organization and
characteristics of the membrane lipids and proteins. In this way, cell membranes
help maintain a state of homeostasis within cells (and tissues, organs, and organ
systems) so that an organism can stay alive and healthy.
