Style includes diction and tone. The main goal is considering style is to present your
information in a manner appropriate for both the audience and the purpose of the writing
DICTION
Diction is a word choice. When writing use vocabulary suited for the type of academic
papers.

TONE
The tone may be objective or subjective, logical or emotional, intimate or distant serious
or humorous.

TONE VS VOICE
A personal conversation with a friend differs from a speech given to a large group of
strangers.

STYLE
The one thing you have to remember is to use authoritative sources. These are vital if the
paper is to persuade the intended audience.

APPROPRIATE TONE IN BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

Written communication is very much different from verbal communication especially in
a business environment.

WHEN YOU ARE WRITING THE BUSINESS DOCUMENT, KEEP THE FOLLOWING
THINGS IN MIND:

 Always be confident
 Be sincere
 Use appropriate words and avoid jargon
 Avoid discriminatory language
 Always stress the positives and the benefits for the reader
 Write in an active voice instead of passive voice
