Suspension Data Analysis

Challenge
Hosted by Narayan Rangarajan and Ritesh Tekriwal
For the Formula Bharat Academy 2019 Workshop
Problem Statement
The suspension system in a bicycle plays a vital
role in ride and handling of the vehicle.

During the design phase, engineers are

challenged with questions such as

● How strong must the system be?

● How soft... ?
● How light... ?

Many of these can be answered by data.

“Data Driven Design” is key in product

development.

As an exercise , can we “attempt” to

characterise the suspension from Data?

4
Data acquisition - Set Up

6 Channel IMU (LSM9DS1) was

mounted on suspension axle and
top of the suspension

3 channels of Gyro was measured

3 Channels of Acceleration was

measured

Sampled at 59 Hz

5
Event Measurement

The bicycle was run over the pothole

at constant speed.

6
3 measurements were gathered from

Data Acquired performance at constant speed at given

positions.

Nomenclature of the data shared:

Timestamps : Test time in seconds

acc_x_mps2 : acceleration in x axis in meters
per second square
Position 2 acc_y_mps2 : acceleration in x axis in meters
per second square
acc_z_mps2 : acceleration in x axis in meters
Position 1 per second square
gyr_x_degspers : rotational speed in x axis in
degrees per second
gyr_y_degspers : rotational speed in y axis in
degrees per second
gyr_z_degspers : rotational speed in z axis in
degrees per second
