GRAMMAR NOTE 5.3

PRESENT CONTINUOUS AFFIRMATIVE FORM

PRESENT CONTINUOUS is used to express actions happening now, at the time of

speaking or actions happening around the time of speaking. 

We form the present continuous or progressive with a form of the verb BE and the
main verb in the present participle (-ing)

A rmative: subject + BE (am , is , are) + verb + ing

Spelling of the present participle:

*To most verbs, add –ing after their base form:

wash         washing 

walk          walking  

do             doing

*Verbs ending in silent –e, drop the –e and add –ing:

write         writing 

take           taking

*Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant double the last consonant and add
–ing:

run         running

PRESENT CONTINUOUS NEGATIVE FORM

PRESENT CONTINUOUS NEGATIVE FORM  is used to express actions are not

happening now, at the time of speaking or actions happening around the time of
speaking. 

We form the present continuous or progressive with a form of the verb BE  (am, is
are) and negative NOT the main verb in the present participle (-ing).

Negative form: subject + BE+ not + verb + ing

Full Form Short Form

I am not working I’m notworking

You are not working You aren't working

She is not working She isn't working

He is not working He isn't working

We are not working We aren’t working
