Group task

A local school wants to focus more on strategies for effective talk in the classroom. They have asked your
team to prepare a short video to introduce the idea to students. You can target your video at either
primary or secondary aged students. The school would like you to include:

1. A simple explanation of the differences between dispositional, cumulative and exploratory talk
(but you don’t need to scare the children with big words - sometimes showing is easier to
understand than telling...)
2. Some simple strategies that children can use when they are talking in the classroom to get more
from their talk (i.e. to use talk to help thinking).

The school found lots of ideas in this video, but the audience for the video is teachers, so the way it is
presented – and lots of the content - is not suitable for or aimed at children. You can use ideas from the
video that you think might be useful to communicate this idea to primary/secondary aged children,
and/or your own ideas.
