Willie Johnson Analysis

The Conflict of “The Other Foot” by Ray Bradbury is:

white man is visiting an all-black mars colony, and Willie Johnson’s not too happy about that. He
A
wants to lynch the man, while his wife would rather that not happen.

I predict that:

I ’m thinking they might be able to get along. Honestly, I might of been a tinsy tiny bit spoiled by the
last question. Y’know, the one where it says Willie changes his mind.

His Actions:

He’s told all the townspeople to bring guns, paint, and lynching ropes to where the white man landed.

Then, he started to command everybody to start preparing to segregate the town.

His motivations:

His motivations are clear and simple: he wants revenge. Or, at the very least, closure.

Willie Johnson’s Backstory:

Willie’s incredibly angry about how the whites treated him and his parents. Pretty justifiable,

considering it involved a lot of poverty and lynchings. He wants to make them go through what him

and his people had to go through.

His private thoughts:

He was deeply affected by the perils forced upon him by the white man, and desperately seeks some
kind of justice for those who suffered and died.
Reactions of others to him:

Hattie: She’s genuinely terrified of him. To her, this idea of revenge doesn’t seem
human.

The Mayor: The Mayor isn’t a fan of Willie’s work either. He seems him as no
better than the white men Willie’s angry about.

The Townspeople: They listened to him when he told them to bring lynching
tools, so it’s clear he’s a major figure of some sorts.

The White Man: The White man asks to let the people of Earth live on Mars. He
seems genuinely sorry about the way they treated African Americans in the past.

At first Willie is motivated to lynch the white man but later he decides to help them instead. The reason
for this change is (and add a detailed “because”) because he realized how similar they really are in the
end.
